When I was far from God and running away my friends told me I had to come to their dorm room and watch SNL with them, they said Bob Dylan was going to be on the show. I knew little nothing about him. They prevailed upon me and then Bob opened up with "Gotta Serve Somebody" and I knew I was not serving God -- he told me the truth! I was angry!!! Four months later, I decided he was right, and I gave my life to Jesus! Best decision I ever made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I worked at NBC that year as an entry level intern right out of college. I got in the elevator one day and producers from the show were speaking about him doing 3 songs- the first time on SNL. Somehow , I got myself into dress rehearsals , done about 7:30 pm. Seeing him was amazing even though my favorite era was 75-77 with the Rolling thunder.
The music, the singing, and the lyrics are fine. But for religionuts, all they have to hear is someone appearing to agree with their preconceptions, and they fall all over themselves to engage in groundless praise. it is an empty faith that doesn't critically evaluate itself.
Yes great singing. It was Dylan's gospel singing that inspired Rolling Stones Jann Wenner to label Dylan as the "greatest singer of our time s" And it's great that Dylan not only got saved but finally found a self-reflective and intelligent worldview that inspired the first universities! Anselm "theology is faith seeking understanding"🤗
Who has to choose between the devil and god? You old time nitwits will never understand that separating god from the devil (which is really just arbitrary reduction of the many-faceted human person!) is like separating day from night. Each requires the other.
I am speechless , now I can understand why he went through with his project against all odds. He really risked his whole reputation, but he sings in an entirely new voice with such fervor it makes me shudder while listening. My favorite is "I believe in you"-there is so much love and deep spiritual in it- it makes the whole world really quiet
@Chris Calo I don't Know his family and their religion, and they play no role in the evaluation of his art. no origin is important, it only counts where someone wants to go and how he behave.Bob Dylan is the greatest artist and nobody else can do what he created because he invented it..do you believe these songs are written by the "big orange man"?
The late Jerry Wexler who produced "Slow Train" was a "middle-aged agnostic Jew" by his own admission. He wanted Bob to "cut a good album" and he always acknowledged the terrible time Bob had with critics in mainstream music and the press over this time in his life.
I was old enough to remember Dylan saying at the time that when he was singing about asking questions, he had a huge following. When he started finding answers, every one abandoned him. As an amateur guitarist, I've covered many of these songs. They are deeply personal and beautiful like "I Believe In You" as well as powerful, like "When You Gonna Wake Up?" in a way that only Dylan can do.@@corneliakapelinski
Way ahead of his time once again -- Dylan recreated gospel music in the face of AOR and that crap. This song is a rite of passage for almost every gospel singer now. And the album and its two follow-ups are AMAZING.

He never became a nostalgia act. Because he never ran dry. Even though at times, he thought he just might be dusty riverbed. The greatest artist since Rilke.
I was a freshman at N.T.S.U. in Denton the night this show aired. Dylan's Slow Train Coming album had created a stir. One local rock DJ snorted with derision as he played an obligatory listen earlier that summer. Editorials in the student newspapers Yada Yada. Remembering now this was at the Dawn of the Reagan Era. The country had taken a turn to the conservative. The Sixties were definitely over!

I wasn’t able to see this live at the time because my dad got the perverse idea that this was week we should get rid of the TV in the family. And I’ve never seen it since. What gives?
Seems after his 1966 motorcycle accident it was never the same Bob. And me & a few friends have a theory that if his name wasn't "Bob Dylan," all the stuff he did after his accident wouldn't have sold if that music had been released by any other unknown musician. I can hear the excuses & folks claiming how great this particular song or another are still fine examples of his songcraft & I agree. But again, if his name wasn't "Bob Dylan"...........
After the accident he still had amazing tours with Tom Petty, Grateful Dead and GE Smith. Not a fan of his singing after about 2000, but no one wrote as many brilliant songs as Dylan, otherwise he wouldn’t have had such an influence on music and pop culture, and wouldn’t have three greatest hits albums
What is strange is I watched this on SNL when I was 19 years old and I thought it was a really good performance. Now, not so much. The second song is terrible.
And his audience quickly got fed up with being preached at by the self-righteous who was going through an identity crisis as result of his marriage ending.
It's always difficult dealing with a fervent new believer. Often they will want to spread the word of what they have found, and the test of their new found faith will be a stern one for them. Folks are travelling at different speeds, or even living in different times albeit you'd think we're all here in the same place, same time together, I'm not sure it's really like that. Anyways did you enjoy the songs? 🌈🤸🌈
missed the point _- all that matters is this : is Slow Train Coming a great record ? answer : YES ! a persons personal life is their issue not anyones else including their marriage .
Whatever the inspiration of art producing is , and it's art we talk about..we don't know it exactly. .Bob Dylan is no messias, no god,. not holy..he do what he wants to do, and he always finds a way to make it real .He is not interested in what the people say. There's a big difference between self-righteousness and real righteousness. The righteousness of Christ is the real thing. This is what Dylan was singing about, not some phony righteousness that one drums up by being good enough, or somehow better than someone else.

Slow Train... Just more greatness of the One and only Bob Dylan. We'll never figure him out!
Yup. The great ones are not here to be "figured out." Rock on Bob!!!!
I'm an atheist Jew, but Dylan's gospel music is some of the best of that genre.
I keep saying it - there are two kinds of music: Bob Dylan and everything else.
I saw him in 1980, and it was great!
Me too 18 and just born again...went downtown San Diego on my own to see him....great night!!!!🙂
This period in Dylan was much criticised, but many years later it appears that the music and the singing were great !

Sinèad O'Connor sings a beautiful version of it.
