Love my 18 Cx-5! Motor is more than adequate! Interior, cabin is super quiet actually 1 dB quieter than the BMW X3! And I love the looks!bust little Suv/Cuv In its class hands-down!
I have a 2016.5 CX-5 Grand Touring and it's a great vehicle, a nice segway into the 2017 model. Many of the same touches- the navigation and entertainment controls are identical- and I actually agree with JD about the ride. I find the ride to be choppy and it certainly isn't fast but that is more than made up for by the great handing and the non-CVT transmission. There is more room in the Rogue and CR-V, and the new Honda in particular is a pretty sweet vehicle, but I don't think I would chose either over a comparable CX-5. The Mazda's cabin is nicer and better-finished.
I just bought the 2018 Grand touring and honestly, the only thing lacking here is a bigger info system screen and Apple Car play. Power is more than adequate with the 3Hp increase unless you do heavy towing. Interior space is also roomier compared to 2016 model.
Good looking car amd probably best rode and most fun to drive. However a lack of HP and overly fussy infotainment system are dealbreakers for me. The 4 cyl turbo from the cx9 has to be added quickly..
The front seats are simply awful as mentioned 3.37, the arm rest is too far back as mentioned. The A pillar is way too thick and the dead pedal is too far forward. Other than that, it’s a great vehicle?
So glad to see a company staying away from cvt also Hyundai is doing the same.i know people love cvt but I don't really like them is just my opinion. And as for small turbo charge engine, well I hope companies are making them strong because they kill the lifespan of the engine and have high maintenance cost that's why Mazda is not using them a lot (except cx9) well there are companies good at making turbo engine I guess, and dct well I never heard anything good about it when comes to reliability. But however small turbo, dct and cvt along with electric, and hybrid is the future so I better embrace it
Zac Fonx Because people keep insisting on fuel mileage in the 27 mpg range using Regular Unleaded fuel. Every single review-and I've watched dozens, goes on and on about fuel economy....
I wish, Mazda made a serious off-road focused SUV, inspired by the XV-1 Pathfinder (from the 1970’s, in Burma.) and the Ford Explorer-based Navajo; called the CX-1 or CX-Prime, with the same chassis as the CX-5 (CX-3; for a two-door body variant) w/ the 2.5L Turbo-4 from the CX-9, but with equivalent ride-height as the Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero, Toyota Land Cruiser (J70 or FJ40), or Suzuki Jimny/Samurai. Plus, it has to have AWD/4WD and a Manual, as standard, period.
"First gen CX-5 sales never really caught fire"...really? I thought they sold like hot cakes and exceeded Mazda's sales forecasts. They were never going to sell as many as the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV-4, but was that the expectation? I admit to living in a town with a Mazda dealer, so that helps, but I see CX-5s everywhere (including in my driveway.) They really are great vehicles, obviously if you have more than 3 kids or need to tow then look elsewhere, but I have no real complaints.
0-60 in 8.5 is sub-par for a new crossover in this class. The new CRV is about 1.5 seconds faster than this, so on a test drive, you will notice the Mazda is much slower, and not getting better fuel economy is exchange. The old 6-speed slushbox isn't competitive either. Everybody else will have 8-speeds or CVTs
Nissan TitanWarrior true but my philosophy has always been that you will end up giving up 1 of 3 things for reliability: gas mileage, power, or money. Since all of mazda's engines are direct injection now, they are still working on finding a solution to carbon buildup, blow by, and engine lugging that was prevalent on the speed3 engines as well as on Ford's ecoboost engines. Those significantly decrease the life of the engine due to either decreased ability of the valves to seat correctly or turbo failure due to blow by in the intake or lack of proper warm up/cool down. Honda and nissan have taken huge hits for their cvts not being reliable, ford had that huge recall for carbon monoxide getting into the cabin on their ecoboost engines, and what's more is you don't have to put premium gas in this as you would for other turbo engines, making the overall cost per mile more competitive. They are starting to figure out other solutions to these issues on the mx-5 and with their hccv engine but I believe the n/a 4 cylinder engine and 6 speed is a solid and reliable platform compared to the current competition. I also believe this is the reason for their recent surge and reliability. Consider all of that and the fact that the top of the line cx-5 is 30k brand new before any discounts, with the standard bose sound system, leather interior, awd, etc and it seems to be the best value for money of any new crossover right now
The CRV may be faster, but the Mazda will handle better and be more fun to drive. Nothing in mazda's class is fast, but its always more fun. Plus the CRV has issues too, really not many things popping up on Mazda's end
Nissan TitanWarrior Your facts are off, so your characterization is wrong from the start. CRV times are around 7.5. -7.6 That is NOT 1.5 seconds faster. Yes - the CRV is marginally faster, that is NOT the same as the CX5 being "sub-par". BTW The crv TINY turbo CVT is so loud it needs Bose-Style Noise Cancellation to achieve normal noise levels!!😱 What do you think that does to the driver's fatigue and hearing levels over time?? Bad. All that vibration, droning, & heat is going to mean less reliability over time. I don't know about other parts of the country, but here in Southern California the Mazda sells for THOUSANDS of $$$ cheaper; and the roads support a better HANDLING car, not a Stoplight to Stoplight gas pedal Warrior. The quick CUV's ARE out there and they cost $8K more!
Another boring and mundane crossover in a market already filled to the brim with this trash. Gotta give mazda credit though, at least they are smart enough to realize that 8 gears is too many. A 6 speed suits a crossover like this much better.
my CX5 GT has that AWFUL P.O.S. TOM TOM NAVI unit, I hope they got rid of that, this new model lost some ZOOM ZOOM(but gained 2hp but got slower??) mines was rated @ 7.7 0 - 60... this is a disappointment. it was my top 3 reasons for getting it!
I love Mazdas! Cute looks with vibrant color options!
The most understated Non - premium (quite luxury) brand to me.
Definitely the best looking vehicle in its segment!
We are so lucky to have such an amazing CUV available for so cheap....fantastic as always Mazda.
He really needs to lay off the tanning beds. He's evenly roasted.
Motorweek is the original review video maker. Before we had YT... We had MW! Glad to see this dude is still on the job, and great tan?

Have you had any issue with the cylinder head cracking?
I have a 2015 CX5 and I love it. Going to drive it for a long time.
Just bought 2 2018 CX5s
they are so nice, traded in our CX3s for them.
I like the way Mazda is going in looks lately! I can't wait to see the Vision concept and the little Hatch when it hits the market.
I love Motor Week!
problem with mazda (subrau too) is not enough dealerships. my nearest is 40 miles away.
Noseefood Yes, but with a reliable car you will only be visiting every 7K miles.
Noseefood my Suzuki dealership is 4k miles away 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
My nearest dealer is 180 miles away. Southeast Idaho and western Wyoming are Mazda-free zones.
live by a big city then ;)
I love my 2014 CX-5 GT!

John with the spray tan 🤣
No cvt makes me happy
...it HAS A 6 SPEED....NOT A CVT....dUH.......
Love my subaru cvt
Yes!
Not a fan of CVTs or the dual clutch automatics at all
Primary reason why I bought a Mazda!
wow, please go easy on the Tan buddy.
Just got ours and it is fantastic!
Needs a V6 or at least supercharge/turbo the 4cyl.
the suit... the tan...
I almost fell over when that guy first appeared. Do you really need that much fake tan?
This guy needs a new tanning cream

So much for the zoom zoom zoom
zoom zoom means more than 0-60 times...what do you mean?
The front seats are simply awful as mentioned 3.37, the arm rest is too far back as mentioned. The A pillar is way too thick and the dead pedal is too far forward. Other than that, it’s a great vehicle?
Holy shit!!!! did John Davis turn into a Latino? 😂😂
Think the interior in the CX-5 is seriously underrated

Why do all the newer CUVs feel like they forgot to put the engine in?
Zac Fonx Because people keep insisting on fuel mileage in the 27 mpg range using Regular Unleaded fuel. Every single review-and I've watched dozens, goes on and on about fuel economy....
Exactly. Most people who buy these cars don't care about power, even luxury suv buyers. Then there are the rest of us...
Does anyone ever pull any weeds on that track?
Mazda should put an HCCI engine for the 2.5 Liter 4-cylinder in 2020, just like the upcoming redesigned Mazda 3.
They should make a three row cx11...with a robust v6
weirdshibainu pfff CX11 should come with a V10.
Or a naturally aspirated inline 6 skyactiv
"First gen CX-5 sales never really caught fire"...really? I thought they sold like hot cakes and exceeded Mazda's sales forecasts. 8.5 second 0-60 is crap wont be able to get on the parkways here, 1/4 16.5 slow too,
Those are the smallest fog lights I think I've ever seen😂
Drive a 2016. Its almost a second faster to 60 and I love it. And it gets better gas mileage. They kinda steppes back on this one.
The EPA changed its system, so no it wont get better mileage.
Mazda needs to: Install 2.5 Turbo, have a real arm rest, and get rid of that infotainment system.
Great
Beautiful car. Very sexy inside and out.
No space inside.. just a mazda 3 hatch lifted up
that's why it's a compact.
Mazda REALLY needs more power in their engine lineup. Are they that cash-strapped that they cannot put money into the powertrain development?
They already developed turbo 2.5 that’s used in cx-9. Not sure if they will use it in cx-5.

Why is everyone worried about 0-60 on a crossover. My 05 crv awd is like 10 seconds but the power is fine for all driving.
The 6 speed slushbox is leagues better than anything else in its class. Mazda makes a nearly perfect automatic.
The CRV may be faster, but the Mazda will handle better and be more fun to drive. Nothing in mazda's class is fast, but its always more fun. Plus the CRV has issues too, really not many things popping up on Mazda's end

6 speed automatic is better lots of them use cvt.
Video looked like it was made in 2010.

Gray leather seat buyers beware: bluejeans dyes easily smear off on this type of seating.
Great looking car but no power. 👎🏾!
Why can't this narrator dude talk like a normal person? He's trying too hard to use a fake radio voice.
This dude has been doing this for like ever have you seen his older videos his voice hasn't changed at all
It’s his unchanged style for over 30 years. Deal with it.
Thanks Carl. Boy you sure told me. Feel better dude?
You don't mess with John Davis. 37 years and counting.
Glad to hear you enjoy being talked down to, Charles Allen Jr. Happy it works for you. I'd rather have a real voice.
my CX5 GT has that AWFUL P.O.S. TOM TOM NAVI unit, I hope they got rid of that, this new model lost some ZOOM ZOOM(but gained 2hp but got slower??) mines was rated @ 7.7 0 - 60... this is a disappointment. it was my top 3 reasons for getting it!
Looks like a frog and it limps with these under sugared engines. Good for shopping and soccer mums.
Honestly, I don’t like the look, inside or out. I know I’m probably the only person to think that.
Jacob shreve I
You’re not the only one. I perfer, the previous-generation CX-5’s styling, than this horrid excuse.
I liked the original CX-5, as well as the original CX-9.
Right with you Jacob.Last generation CX-9 and CX-5 look better to my eyes
no android auto, no purchase
can be added with an easy hack, check Mazda forums. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay cannot be added. ;) Still, it should be standard now!
