FINALLY, a BJJ instructor who recognizes that motor tasks are best taught through motor practice, not through talking and watching. So many instructors say watch me watch me and don't let you work through it physically, even when you are not doing it right. They stop you and you have to watch them. Big difference between a Bjj black belt/red belt and a master instructor. Obrigado Rorion!!!!!!!

just amazing...i cant express how much it helps when you have a teacher that will do just what they were saying...to have your teacher show you how to do it and walk through it with you 100% and not just tell you...will up your game so fast...the gym that i last went to had white belts beating blue belts that were visiting from other schools and holding their own aginst fresh purple belts too...all because of the same style teaching they were talking about in this video

As soon as the guy started telling the blindfolded guy directions. It came to me, that he could just grab his hand and lead him over there. But it's an excellent demostration and it's a great analogy of how to teach someone. You Show them, you don't Tell them.

I came up in the era when instructors used fear and intimidation during classes and all it did was scare the crap out of the student and they either quit or just tried to survive the class but retained nothing . Once I went out on my own I went the other way and just kept things relaxed and fluid, always trying to find ways to actually help my students LEARN. Strange how that wasn't common back then . At least not at the schools I went to

Because almost no one knows about Oswaldo Fadda or his master Luis Franca.(student of Mitsuyo Maeda) outside of Brazil. The Gracies are great martial artists, but they are also great businessmen and know how to market themselves. The best example is the creation of the UFC by Rorion Gracie. No one from the Franca/Fadda lineage has marketed their lineage (at least outside of Brazil) as greatly as the Gracies have. I first heard of the Gracies almost 20 years ago, Franca & Fadda only 2 years ago.

An explanation is a hell of a thing. There are so many ways it can go wrong, and so few ways to go right.
There are heuristic people, there are axiomatic people; and there is a bit of creepy transactional analysis to figure out who is talking to whom. Also, an explanation is always an inherently unfair situation where one person with a monopoly on knowledge gets to dictate rules to a student. And students that feel bullied don't learn. Ever.
Much respect for Rorion's focus on pragmatism.

@ouska36 All of helio's brothers have the red belt (10th degree).
Rorion also has a red belt though, (9th degree). It is the highest possible belt in bjj nowadays. Since the 10th degree is reserved for the founders.

One on one relationship is very important. In the military, I moved around a lot and trained with many different instructors at different schools. Now I am out of the military and tried to go to a new school (I won't mentions the name or affiliate). I never felt like I was part of the "family". It seemed like the instructor was only interested in his competetive fighters. Needless to say, I am no longer a student at that school. You must make your students feel like they are part of the family.

I'm not an apologist but I will tell you this so you don't miss the point; this is an excerpt from the ICP. The point here is to have students that might otherwise be discouraged by a lack of understanding or inability to see a technique through from beginning to end, experience the success that comes with perfect execution so they can have a vision of what mastery of the technique will bear them, and in turn fuel their enthusiasm to pursue it. The caveat, that is not demonstrated here, being that the student will be given successive opportunities to improve his/her technique by pressure testing it against opponents of varying skill levels at gradually increasing intensity levels in isolation and in combination with all the other techniques until it is ultimately mastered!
