    Just completed the TR690 valve body replacement on a 2011 Outback with 167k miles. Took 8.6 qts to refill. Used BAFX OBDII WiFi Reader 27$ and Active OBD Scanner (Free) to monitor CVT Temp. Going to a friend with SnapOn Scanner to get TCM MEM and MEM2 Cleared. Will drive to have relearn completed. Also cleaned Throttle Body did Idle Relearn, Changed Front/Rear Differential Fluids since it was up on Jack Stands. This is our oldest of 4 Subarus. Awesome videos. Thanks for making them and being so detailed.

    I built one of those filler pumps out of a Home Depot pesticide/herbicide pump. Saved enough $$ making it instead of buying off the tool truck, I was able to buy EVERY transmission fill adapter for all makes and models.

    I had this done on my 2013 Impreza by a local Subaru specialty shop. They mentioned the special temperature needed so I trust that they did it properly. The car has been fine and even maybe a bit smoother afterwards, but that could just be my perception. The dealer recommended never changing the fluid and had no idea about certain temps needed.

    When I've had to do something similar on a VW transmission, I bought a fill plug, drilled a hole through the old one, and JB-Weld'ed a hose nipple on it. Then I attached a regular funnel with a hose to the nipple and filled it top-side. If you do enough of these (or if Subaru uses the same fill plugs on everything), this would probably be a lot easier long-term. Pumping sucks :P

      There are videos here on YTube on how to make a pressure filler, inexpensively. I made my own (I should make another, everyone keeps borrowing it).

    • @JohnnyFTD

      Do you recommend a second hole drilled for transmissions without a dip stick? Just wondering where the displaced air will go, or if it's needed.

    • @300DBenz
      @300DBenz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JohnnyFTD those “sealed for life” transmissions aren’t actually sealed, they all have breather tubes/caps to release any pressure inside the transmission.

    • @ZiggyTheHamster
      @ZiggyTheHamster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnnyFTD yeah what 300DBenz said. You don’t need to fill under pressure nor do you need to care about your DIY fitting getting pressurized. You can just leave it installed, fill it until your tube backs up, run the fill procedure, check your tube to see if it’s still backed up, and pull the plug out to check the final level. Also it behooves you to not tighten your fitting beyond finger tight because it’ll hold no problem and it’ll be a lot of stress on your JB Weld to crack it loose or tighten it.

    Good video. Checking the level is done with the engine running, I assume/hope .
    Otherwise the oil seems drains back out again and I'd get the wrong level with the engine off.

    MrSubaru, I've been searching your videos to see if you have anything like this...can you help?
    08 legacy. Ran great until 3 days after we got it home. Replaced spark plugs and engine valve cover and cleaned mass air flow. Ran fine then until I unhooked the battery to fix the air bag issue. Now did the idle re-learn thinking that would fix the newly found rough idle after hooking battery back up. Did Idle re-learn twice. Now it runs fine ONLY if AC Is on. mid drive if you turn AC off it all of a sudden putters again when you come to a complete stop in drive or reverse. Oh someone please help.

    Just got an Outback wilderness! I plan to do a drain and fill like this around every 3 year 36k mile as indicated in Japan manual.
    If doing it this way, can I get away with omitting the re-learn procedure?
    On my sequoia, labeled as a lifetime fluid, we would drain and measure how much came out. Then replace with that amount. Then get to temp and use the check plug to make sure. This doesn't have a check plug, but a similar method can be used? Just found it odd on the TR580 vid that it poured out the fill plug when cold. I guess optimal temp and cycling through gears a few times is crucial to level check.

    2013 Subaru Impreza with 219k miles, CVT replaced by SoA at 103,000, similar issue with stalling at low speeds. No CEL codes thrown but Hill assist, AT Temp and VDC. I had the brake lamp switch already replaced as a recall. Is it most likely the valve body solenoid? I haven't changed the CVT fluid since the transmission replacement. Would SoA recommend a full transmission replacement if it was only the valve body and torque converter?

    TR580 CVT question. My local transmission repair shop changed the valve body on my 2014 Outback but did not do the relearn procedure. They said they've changed about 20 of these Subaru valve bodies without doing anything but driving them afterwards to do the relearning process.
    So ever since the valve body was replaced the cvt, after getting warmed up will give the feeling of slipping from a dead stop. There's not any screeching sounds or such. It almost feels like it's in natural and being put into drive after the gas pedal is pressed.
    What's been your experience with not re-learning these cvt after valve body replacement?

      @@ausmartin1 Our culture sucks since the majority of vehicles are just leased off the lot or financed and then traded in for the new one keeping them in debt. Newer cars are advertised with "lifetime fluids" and that lifetime is probably for how long the vehicle is under warranty or is expected to be traded in. There are a few of us left who buy our vehicles without going into debt and who do our own fluid changes.

      I use a garden sprayer to do the fill. Remove the spray tip, fill with 5 or 6 qts of fluid, pump up the pressure, and use the wand and trigger to fill. Worked really well and very inexpensive. Next level improvement would be to install an air fitting and use a regulator and compressor to hold the pressure while filling.

      There are tools in the $1000 range from Autel and Launch that can do most of the bi-directional advanced functions that SSM can. Something like the Autel MS906 or one of the Launch X431 models. Do your research first. Most include a year of free software updates, but after that the updates are pretty pricey.

    How do I confirm transmission learning was good after valve body replacement? What should I look/hear for during test drive?
    My mechanic followed your procedure step by step. But he says the gear ratios are wrong and that there is a learning issue with the transmision. He feels slow acceleration specially at low gears and that the transmission takes to much time to "shift" but I feel evelethig is right... there is no check engine light, I don't hear notices jumps or other weird behavior. Acceleration feels normal to me... But I just want to make sure.

      I have switched my Subaru over to everything amsoil. It doesn't use anywhere near as much oil as it did with Subaru or Mobil 1. I'd make the switch if I were you and not look back. Subaru doesn't own an oil refinery. They switch brands all the time. You just don't know it.

    @MrSubaru1387 could a botched CVT learn cause issues with the forward and transfer clutches? I'm fairly sure my car has forward clutch slip. Here is a video of what my car does;
    th-cam.com/video/l5HPjSue4yM/w-d-xo.html
    The CVT in my car only has ~6,000 miles on it. The previous CVT only lasted 1,200 miles. The previous one I believe had issues with the transfer clutch (whine around corners) and the forward clutch.
    My theories are;
    1. Bad reman unit from Subaru
    2. Wrong fluid added by the dealer
    3. Botched (or skipped) CVT learn. If it is this one, My guess is they left the wheels and tires off the front which skewed the results due to the decreased mass.
