Great topic. There is very little info out there about the dance that must be choreographed among 5th wheel, cab, bedrail, toolbox/aux tank, hitch, etc.

I look at the way you measure and if you had an extended pin box which now places your trailer a foot further back in the box you are going to gain in your turning radius measuring from the pin box bolts to where the notch is for the corner does not do it justice. To do a 90° turn you need a 8' box so you have the 4' forward to protect the cab. I have a extended pin box as well as a sliding fifth wheel and a 6'-9" box I can almost get a 90° jack. Nice video

It all depends on your rig and your particular “best” setup. On my fuzion, i want a king size bed, so i need more room on the front area, I have a short bed ford. It would hit the cab if I didn’t utilize a pullrite superglide hitch. With the autoslide it doesn’t hit even at 90 degree jack- knife. I do have an rds diesel tank, but it is below the bed rails in front.

I just purchased a 2019 Rockwood 5th wheel with the Lippert Turning point hitch. It takes the turning point from the king pin to the point under the nose of the rv. Works great on my 2010 Dodge with a short box.

I’ve been inside a lot of space craft rvs. My grandparents got one themselves. They can’t afford a semi so they got a dolly and hooks the dolly up to there dually Chevy Silverado. People takes vids pics on the high way. We got trapped in a snow storm on the high way and we had enough power to pull the camper still. Green lakes had no space craft camper. We were first lol we had cones to block road because it’s hard to back a space craft rv with a dolly on it. We don’t take the dolly off. We take it off the truck I push it until it’s at an angle. It has 6 slide outs it’s luxurious. Wish you could see it.

It's great that some companies have been doing this because I had a short bed 3/4 ton and loved the way it looked but traded it off because one reason was I broke my back glass out of it with my dads 5th wheel turning to sharp.

The Elkridge fifth wheel is that same way. I have a 6 foot and half bed and a above rail tool box and have no problem making a tight turn. But be cautious on making them tight turns by looking at your axles on your tailer see how bad they twist.

I agree with clearance issue on each 5th wheel.
Now get a axle scale on the rear axle of your truck with each 5th wheel and you will see why the tool box needs removed. Hitch placement is very important.

    • @robertrutherford9057

Contact with Toolbox.....found out the hard way. If I had a low profile toolbox, I would be fine or if I didn’t have the 110 gallon fuel tank in front of the toolbox, I would be ok. I can easily make a 90 degree turn but as in my current park, if the main road is narrow and you have to drop off the side while backing into your spot and become unlevel, my toolbox definitely makes contact. I shall be looking into swapping out for a low profile toolbox soon.

Clearance is important to me because my truck is a welding rig, and has a welding machine up against the window. The welding machine is almost as high as the cab.

    • @dedalliance1

If it's a long bed, maybe you can get a slider hitch made for short beds to give you more room. But, the further back the pin weight is the more upward force on the front of the truck. But it'll just depend on what truck and trailer it is.

Brandon That would be a lot of manual labor. These 20K Reese Gooseboxes are definitely not light. I think there would be easier “targets” nearby. If you mean someone simply wanting to take the Goosebox for their own use....no, not really anything stopping them from that, except again, a good deal of manual labor.

  • @marksmith6837

I wouldn't think the location of the rear bolts on the pinbox relative to the front corner of the house is much of an accurate way to determine turning clearance unless all the hitch assemblies are the same length from rear bolts to pin centerline. If the hitch extends more forward from the pinbox the rear bolts relative to the front corner can be more in line.

Unfortunately, with the quality of modern battery grinders etc, can cut those off no problem if the lot has poor security. I've had to do it a number of times. We own too many trailers and a 5th wheel.
I use a low profile tool box at front of truck bed and have a slider. No prob. To me the key is to measure everything from every angle.
BTW, you don't seem to use your RV much or even the truck for truck stuff.
