      @@colinhill1417 but bass drums project sound a lot, maybe if you use the 14 inch one, put a tenor head and muffle it a lot, but at that point, it's just a normal flub

    The Racine Kilties DBC tried using these in 2015, luckily I'm a tenor player but the 2 biggest complaints were they did not project AT ALL and the top head was angled towards the player so they're technique was jacked.. These things were awful haha

      @tebby24 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What do you mean the "technique was all jacked" ? The optimal technique is determined by the instrument. Obviously the technique will be slightly different than the technique for a flat drum but it can't be any less ergonomic than a sideways bassdrum.

    I was gonna say I way preferred the sound of the traditional bass drums, then I thought the other ones sounded good with the heads off, and then I changed my mind again because I kinda think they sound sorta like a hollow tube. Which, I mean, I guess they are. They do look cool, but I think the traditional bass drum setup sounds just a bit better.

    I do have one question which wasn't covered in this excellent video. It looks like a standard upright bass drum is closer to the center of mass of the drummer. Being further away from the body, Is the Ergo Sonic more difficult to march and maneuver?

    Not too dissimilar, sonically. I really like the volume/tone consistency with the ergos directing all their sound toward the audience versus half. Really neat idea. I definitely like the design and thought process behind it. And I even like the looks. It’s a break from tradition to be sure, but not egregiously so. Tasteful and well executed, IMO, but perhaps a bit complex from a manufacturing standpoint. Curious about long-term durability with those joints (if you stated their age, I didn’t catch it).

    I don't really like the sound of these. I don't know how to explain it any better, but you can 100% hear every degree of the angled drums. The sound sounds like it's been bent just like the drums. The way it projects just doesn't have that punch you want from basses. ESPECIALLY when playing spits. The headless ergosonics have some potential for recording though. Most marching bass recordings cut out a lot of that extra bass resonance so having that option for a video or recording seems useful

    These gave me nightmarish flashbacks to the late 1980s and early 1990s when there was a short lived collection of marching toms that were fiberglass (I think) and curved on the bottom to redirect the sound forward. I remember they looked heavier than 'bleep' and I'm so glad they died a quick death and people just use simple sound reflectors instead of those horrid things. I can't find any pictures of them and several groups in DCI used them. I want to say they were Slingerland, but that may just me inserting a name I know.

    Sound ranking (my opinion):
    Tied for 1st - Ergo Basses with and without reso heads
    Distant 3rd - traditional marching basses
    The Ergo drums just had a richness that is missing in most marching basses these days. So many dumlines care SO much about showing of crazy chops that they are willing to tune and muffle the basses in a way that is more articulate but sounds like choked out cardboard boxes. You can hardly call them basses if they are nearly atonal. It becomes difficult to categorize them as the bass part of the battery if the low frequency tonal information is almost completely stripped out.
    Whether it was tuning, muffling, or just the design of the ergo drums, they seemed, in this video, to have a rich sustain that was fantastic. I liked them with and without the reso heads, so maybe a ported head would be just the right balance between. It would be great if you found your inner rdavidr, and let us hear the results.
