STORYLINE:
Finland's President-elect Alexander Stubb on Monday said his country won't have a political relationship with Russia until Moscow ends the war in Ukraine.
Former Prime Minister Stubb won Finland’s election runoff on Sunday against ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in a close race for the presidency.
With all votes counted, center-right candidate Stubb of the National Coalition Party had 51.6% of the votes, while independent candidate Haavisto from the Green left got 48.4%.
Speaking at the briefing with journalists, Stubb said he did not see the country's relations with Russia improving in the near future.
"We do not have a political relationship right now with Russia, and, I don't see that improving in the near future," he said.
"The reason being, of course, that, we cannot have a relationship until Russia stops its war and aggression on Ukraine."
The presidency is a key political post in this northern European country of 5.6 million people.
Unlike in most European countries, the president of Finland holds executive power in formulating foreign and security policy together with the government.
But they are also expected to remain above the fray of day-to-day politics and stay out of domestic political disputes while acting as a moral leader of the nation.
The head of state also commands the military - a key role after Finland joined NATO in April 2023 in the aftermath of Russia’s attack on Ukraine a year earlier.
Finnish media outlets on Monday pointed out how Europe's security is at stake as never before since World War II, due to Russia's invasion.
The 55-year-old Stubb, who was prime minister in 2014-2015 and started his political career as a lawmaker at the European Parliament in 2004, will become the 13th president of Finland since the Nordic country’s independence from the Russian empire in 1917.
During his campaign, he said Finland's priorities include maintaining a hard line toward Moscow and Russia’s current leadership, strengthening security ties with Washington, and the need to help Ukraine both militarily and at a civilian level.
Stubb is taking over from the hugely popular President Sauli Niinistö, whose second six-year term expires next month and who wasn’t eligible for reelection.

@@Soundsinthevoid Nothing if you don't understand anything that the so-called security guarantees will pay in the future, maybe now 2% of GDP, probably 10 years from now 20% + whatever else the USA comes up with besides that, and yet the USA will stay out of the war if it's bad business for them, explanations depending on the situation... So quite a lot of funding from nothing 🙄🙄
By the way Finland is paying more than 2% for its defenses. There is no reason to refer to Trump.
Sweden will do that thing as well.
