  • WIKIPEDIA:
    United Airlines Flight 232 was a regularly scheduled United Airlines flight from Denver to Chicago, continuing to Philadelphia. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (registered as N1819U) serving the flight crash-landed at Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering a catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of many flight controls. At the time, the aircraft was en route from Stapleton International Airport to O'Hare International Airport. Of the 296 passengers and crew on board, 112 died during the accident, while 184 people survived. The crash was the fifth-deadliest one involving the DC-10, behind Turkish Airlines Flight 981, American Airlines Flight 191, Air New Zealand Flight 901, and UTA Flight 772. Despite the deaths, the accident is considered a prime example of successful crew resource management because of the large number of survivors and the manner in which the flight crew handled the emergency and landed the airplane without conventional control.

      As an X-plane and MFS amateur I can confirm that's practically the second worst thing that can happen right after the shaking yoke / stall alert. It would be literally terrifying to hear and I am more than just impressed by the fact they were still able to save so many people in spite of such big damage inflicted by exploded engine (mainly completely disabled/broken hydraulics).

    • @georgemorley1029
      @georgemorley1029 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Because the aircraft was rolling over as they came in to land and the only thing they could do was use throttle to level. If he hadn’t done that, then they’d probably all be dead. This is from Wikipedia:
      “Moments before landing, the roll to the right suddenly worsened significantly and the aircraft began to pitch forward into a dive; Fitch realized this and pushed both throttles to full power in a desperate, last ditch attempt to level the plane. It was now 1600.[1]: 23  The CVR recorded these final moments:
      Records: "Close 'em off."
      Haynes: "Left turn, close 'em off."
      Records: "Pull 'em all off."
      Fitch: "Nah, I can't pull 'em off or we'll lose it, that's what's turning ya."
      Records: "Okay."
      Fitch: "Back, Al!"
      Haynes: "Left, left throttle, left, left, left, left, left, left, left, left, left, left, left!"
      GPWS: "Whoop whoop pull up. Whoop whoop pull up. Whoop whoop pull up."
      Haynes: "Everybody stay in brace!"
      GPWS: "Whoop whoop pull up."
      Haynes: "God!"
      [Sound of impact]
      End of recording.
      The engines were not able to respond to Fitch's commands in time to stop the roll, and the plane impacted the ground with its right wing, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately.”

      @@jstrahan2 Denny fitch pushed the throttles to max 4 seconds before impact because of the massive sink rate and he needed to bleed some of that off and possibly get the engines to flare the aircraft. Unfortunately the left engine spooled up faster and exacerbated the right roll. It wasn't his fault and I believe it was found that the airplane breaking apart saved more lives that it would have if it remained together on fire.

    • @jstrahan2
      @jstrahan2 ปีที่แล้ว

    No I can't pull them off, you'll lose it, that's what's turning you!
