    When I was 12 our street in Northridge CA was infested with these. They were everywhere the catepillars. They would build there cacoons under roof edges. I really love these butterflies they fly around in a loop in Autumn. Very rare in San Fernando Valley now but I saw one along stream the other day.

    This looks very much like the Mourning Cloak I have been seeing here in Orange County CA and which we now know are parasitized by the wasp Pteromalus puparum.

      It is a mourning cloak Craig.
      We in the UK call them the Camberwell beauty after the
      area of London that they were first observed here in the
      18th century.
