Mourning cloaks are so strikingly beautiful with a brilliant flash of blue when they open their wings.
I managed to get a gorgeous picture of one that was resting with its wings fully open, against the backdrop of white painted cinder blocks.

I'm friends with one that has decided our backyard is his. He lands in my hand everyday and hangs out for several minutes at a time. He will chase birds and other butterflies away.

Very cool butterfly. I seen one last year in very early spring . I googled it to find out what kind it was. I'm in N.Y zone 6a. It was warmer itself up in the sun on the side of my garage.

Cool! They get your attention - usually because you notice them in a usually butterflyless time of year.

Nice! They are such a cool butterfly and I think they are quite striking. Was it flying around you and at you? If it was it most likely was a make setting up his territory.

I have mourning cloaks in my backyard right now. They have been landing on my hand when I hold it out! Last week one landed on me twice and yesterday I got one to land on my hand at least 12 times, once for 4 minutes! Today a different one landed on my hand several times, once for 2 minutes. Is this a trait of the mourning cloak?
I posted a bunch of shorts and videos.

Butterflies often land on people looking for minerals in their sweat or on their skin. It's super cool when they do because you can get a really good up close look at them!

Glad you liked it! Mourning cloaks are native to all of North America and can be found south to northern South America, and also are native to Eurasia. They are not a common species, but some areas seem to have large numbers of them. In England they are known as the Camberwell beauty.
