Insurance cost depends on engine size, driver's age , UK driving experience, post code where you park over night , manufacture , popularity and the reliability of the vehicle, profession of the driver, time of use, age of the vehicle etc..This is my personal experience. Pinne, insurance cost depends on the market value of the vehicle along with the driver's experience combined with certain factors like where the vehicle is kept and what it is used for. Also insurance need not be very expensive even for new UK drivers if you have international driving experience. You can't buy policy online for this; you will have to talk to the company directly to take this into consideration. They will ask you to sign declaration of safe driving history and to take full UK license in 1 yr.
I have purchased a 2018 model BMW SUV in 6 months after I landed in UK in 2019. The car had run only 5000mi and it was worth £24,000 though I got it for a better deal and no car finance. I had a better offer from the bank for a personal loan so went with that after putting in 25% as deposit. I did not have a full UK license that time. Only had my foreign license and a provisional UK license. Insurance cost came to £750 for the first year considering my 20 years of international driving experience with no claims which is a very good price for this car. Since then I have converted the provisional into a full UK manual license in Aug 2020 and endorsed that to the policy. Premium remains unchanged. On the other hand if I look at the cost of a new policy with a new full UK license, it comes to almost £2000 per year for this car. So I suggest to take a policy on international license and then add the full UK license when it becomes available to you for better money's worth.

@@PathfinderBySunilRajan Please do not get defensive. Dear Sir, It is not about whether your friend has bought the insurance or not. I am sure your friend has taken out a policy for his car and himself. Without that he can't drive off from the lot.
It is more about are YOU covered for an accident or not while driving his car? In UK the insurance policies insure only the specific driver on the specific car. Another person is not insured while driving someone else's car unless he is added to the policy as an additional driver (temp or perm). So If you injure someone or cause damage to someone else's property and damage to your friend's car even, you will be on your own to fix all that. You will not get the insurance payout. DOC coverage (Drive other car) which is a blanket coverage to drive any car is not available these days except under very specific cases. So for the time you were driving your friend's car maybe you were not insured to do that because I think you were not added as an additional driver to his policy. If you are indeed added to his policy or your own policy has DOC 3rd party coverage, then you are legal in driving his car. Otherwise not. Because this is UK and not India :)
I'm new to UK, but I am one of the leaders of the underwriting section of a well known insurance company in UK :) Hence the advice to you. If you need proof for what I have said above, please check your friend's car's Certificate of Insurance and also your own car's. There should be an exclusion for Drive Other Car for both your policies. So please think twice before driving a friend's car on public property.
