  • In this video, I've customize a Kyosho Trail King to look more like a tracked Mercedes Benz Unimog.

This winter I wanted to work on a tracked vehicle. I thought it would be cool to take a break from normal cars and try a Trail King. But the stock kit looked less appealing, more like a toy with a low budget look. I’m familiar with the Unimog (manufactured by Daimler Benz) and started looking for inspiration-because I think the Trail King body is inspired by the Unimog 406/407. Unless there is a Japanese equivalent.
I’ve never had a tracked vehicle so this is something new. In this video, it’s mostly about the exterior customization. I didn’t have the time to run it due to work and the pandemic. I may test run it when it snows.
There are various mods you can do to the Trail King since it’s based on the Kyosho Blizzard. However, I wanted to keep the electronics and mechanical mods to a minimum and first focus on cosmetic work. The three mechanical related things I only did are:
    1. Replaced the 16 plastic bushings with metal ball bearings (4x8x3mm)
    2. Replaced the stock 16T pinion gear with 13T (so it looks more scale-like when running, and for efficiency)
    3. Added a couple aluminum heatsinks on the motor (since I covered up one of the vents on the bumper, but I think it’s not as necessary. More for cosmetic)
I also have an ESS One sound system I was using on another project car and thought I’d try it on the Trail King to give it a more realistic sound. The Trail King has two speed controllers-one for each track/side-but the ESS is supposed to hook up to only one by design. Initially, I thought of rewiring an adapter but eventually just decided to hook it up to one side so as to not complicate things.
For the exterior, I used Tamiya PS-63 gunmetal (body) and TS-21 gold (wheels and sprocket). Added a few details like a grill cover and dual exhaust (taken from a Tamiya Ford F150 High-lift), added an ABS front underbody cover (to hide the silver front shaft and make it look meaner/lower), light bar with switch, a couple decals and a Brabus tuner badge.
Overall, I’m happy with the look. I think I made it more mature and classy. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the video!

Very beautiful work there. The gold rims and gunmetal body combo is spot on. Can't wait for your next build.

I really love this build. Over the years, I've had a couple tracked vehicles, and they were by far some of the most fun. I hope you do test it. I'd love to see that. Thanks for the project!

Hi Miguel P. Thanks! And thank you for watching. I was testing it inside the house back then it was actually really fun. It instantly made me smile. I was so surprised-and surprised that they're not as popular. I was supposed to run it during the height of winter/snow but had to take care of some personal matter and so I missed that slot. However, I'm going to run this at some point because I want to see how it performs. I'm going to film it as well. Thanks again!

Very nice! Smart move to go with the 13 tooth pinion gear right away... (My Trail Kings are not as refined looking as yours are...if they were I would be afraid to get them dirty!)

Bruno, Thank you! And thanks for watching! When I was looking at the manual I saw the 13T pinion gear as an option and was listed for the Blizzard, thought that was interesting. I initially tried the 16T and although it was fun I wanted the vehicle to look and feel a bit more realistic so I think the 13T is a good direction (and less strain on the stock motor). I know what you mean about worrying/getting it dirty :)! I just checked your channel and you really are into the tracked Kyoshos! Have to check your other videos. I’m just surprised not a lot of people are into these and it’s actually very fun.

@@MechanicAfterHours the mods are one reason I love rc, my Axial UMG 6x6 will be a replica of the Chevy Hennessey Goliath, so I'll have a UMG crewcab body the rest is all fab...

I've been ripping around with the kyosho blizzard for quite some time. The bottom gear in the transmission really should be made of metal. It gets the most torque and always fails first. I'm not sure if they are better now than when I bought mine, but one of my motors always went slightly faster than the other. One motor is actually spinning backwards. I tried swapping the motors and it didn't matter which motor you used, one esc was always slower than the other one. Eventually I replaced both motors and esc's with brushless 380's. Aside from replacing gears once or twice a season and two tracks after a few years use it has been a good kit. The metal option tracks are sweet but sadly they are just too much inertia for the stock transmission to handle.

Thanks for the message! Yes, there are weak parts on this vehicle. I haven’t run into issues yet as I haven’t done a lot of running with but like you said I will upgrade the motors in the future. Also the ESCs. And I was aware of the metal tracks being too much for this. I think it works best with the nitro version.
