My mom saw him perform, "in various states of sobriety". She said when he was sober, his singing gave her goosebumps. When he was high/drunk, June had to come out and help him sing the songs.
It's also his first performance of it, lol! He'd never performed it before. He's actually reading the lyrics on stage, you can see him looking down sometimes

This song played on my granddad's funeral. Not the typical funeral song, I know, but he loved it! English isn't my native language so I didnt understand a word of it back then, but now I'm older and I have to admit the old man had a great sense of humor! It reminds me that you shouldn't take life too serious, and I love him for teaching me that.

I was a preschooler when I first heard this. My parents would meet up for lunch with me at a pub and the first time I heard it on a jukebox I fell for that song and constantly pestered my parents for money to play it over and over. I claimed my imaginery friend Mick liked it. I still love it now. Later on in life I found out who Johnny Cash was. My pre school instinct was good. Johnny Cash was a thoughtful man who fought for people that society left behind he was simply something spectacular and even to this day, my love of plain black clothing I could probably put down to knowing, badasses wear black. I'm a grandma now and I may accidentally on purpose break out the Johnny Cash and explain that it's not just Goths that wear black.

He said at the end of the song "Those people cheering are inmates at a jail." This song is a classic & hilarious, but what I love most about it is that Mr. Cash & his crew went & preformed for people who were serving time in prison. That's an incredibly kind thing of them to do.

I was exposed to Johnny Cash (and Ray Charles & Al Green) in the early 70s via my dads 8-track tapes which he would play non-stop in our family car back then, a Thunderbird. Hearing this song now in 2017 brings back some of my earliest memories of being a kid. Now I understand why dad played this music so much. It's great music!!

I like songs that tell a story and this one is the best I ever heard. I think that's a real good story, it's serious and it's funny at the same time. Mr. Jonny Cash is as convincing as it gets. He's great - a personality the same level as Elvis in my opinion. He's become a legend.

I am a female, but my dad gave me a typically male name so when I would cry about not being named something popular or girly he used to make me listen to this song. 34 years later and I am SO grateful for my unique name, and so grateful that he taught me to appreciate good music.
