Depending on the reception from the crowd he'd either finish the song that way or say "i'm gonna name him... after you" and it completely changes the tone of the song.

I just...Johnny Cash was so real, he understood. Look at the faces of the prisoners, in a den of hell these men are smiling. Johnny's music is causing that, his powerful voice and guitar playing. He causes joy where there should be sadness. Johnny Cash, so very powerful.

The album was "Folsom Prison Blues" but he played at a lot of prisons around the country. I think of how many of those prisoners probably didn't have a father around to guide them into adulthood. What a great song on so many levels.

I met Johnny in 75, never a more approachable man on this earth. Like so many of us, Johnny stumbled in his younger years but he never fell. Never a man with the solid values in life have I ever met. He fell in love with June Carter but she wouldn't have him intill he quit the drugs. He quit cold turkey, married June and the rest was history . If that doesn't show us all the power of love my friends, NOTHING WILL!!. God bless you Johnny , for giving us all something all the gold in the world can't buy, your music, your values , and for making us all better people just by you being on this earth. Rest in peace my friend, both you and June.

English isn't my native language so I didnt understand a word of it back then, but now I'm older and I have to admit the old man had a great sense of humor! My parents would meet up for lunch with me at a pub and the first time I heard it on a jukebox I fell for that song and constantly pestered my parents for money to play it over and over. I claimed my imaginery friend Mick liked it. I still love it now. Later on in life I found out who Johnny Cash was. My pre school instinct was good. Johnny Cash was a thoughtful man who fought for people that society left behind he was simply something spectacular and even to this day, my love of plain black clothing I could probably put down to knowing, badasses wear black. I'm a grandma now and I may accidentally on purpose break out the Johnny Cash and explain that it's not just Goths that wear black.

Johnny Cash is a different breed. I consider myself a very compassionate, empathetic liberal but he takes it to a new level. What he did for these men is unbelievable. Props to San Quentin too for allowing this. This would never fly in 2023.

I’m doing an acoustic gig tomorrow for my godsons surprise 21st birthday and I’ve chosen this as part of the set. It’s not just a song it’s a musical story and great when everyone’s “havin themselves a brew” 👌

Daddy loves Johnny Cash's music & would play it for me when I was a teenager. I remember he told me Shel Silverstein wrote this song & Mr. Cash was reading the lyrics as he played. He said at the end of the song "Those people cheering are inmates at a jail." This song is a classic & hilarious, but what I love most about it is that Mr. Cash & his crew went & preformed for people who were serving time in prison. That's an incredibly kind thing of them to do.

That was the first 45 record I ever asked for, on my 6th birthday Sep 2nd 1969. My mother put a record player on the kitchen table and started playing and called me in there, I still remember that like it was yesterday.

I was exposed to Johnny Cash (and Ray Charles & Al Green) in the early 70s via my dads 8-track tapes which he would play non-stop in our family car back then, a Thunderbird. Hearing this song now in 2017 brings back some of my earliest memories of being a kid. Now I understand why dad played this music so much. It's great music!!

I like songs that tell a story and this one is the best I ever heard. I think that's a real good story, it's serious and it's funny at the same time. Mr. Jonny Cash is as convincing as it gets. He's great - a personality the same level as Elvis in my opinion. He's become a legend.

Well, he must have thought it was quite a joke,
and it got lots of laughs from a lot of folks,
it seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
and some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell you, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.
