  • I found a pristine Dymo Deluxe Tapewriter Kit in a thrift store recently. Made in USA! I may have called it a Labelwriter, but it is actually a Tapewriter using the old-style embossed 3/8 tapes. This is the kind of tapes our parents and grandparents used to label their things: you might see it on old 8 mm film boxes, old camera cases, or on high-fidelity audio gear.
I am using an unusual army-green tape with white letters. You have probably seen black, red, and blue tapes on vintage items. My case has tapes that are black with gold edges.
Dymo makes a much inferior model today, and both the 3/8 and 1/4 inch tapes can be found online.

Yes, that fold is to help you remove the backing. It’s a pull tab. Without that, removing the backing can be a pain.

Great video, appreciate you showing off the operating instructions! Any chance they mention what size tape to be using?

Well, it's a custom tape for the Tapewriter, made by Dymo. They probably stopped making them decades ago, but I haven't checked.

The Dymo 1570 can use 2 different size tapes. It uses 9mm and 12mm. When you thread the tape into the machine, the slot for the 9mm size is below the slot for the 12mm size. So pay attention to how you thread it. If you thread the 9mm through the 12mm opening, the tape will slide while you type and your text will not come out centered on the tape.

What is the difference between the different discs?

Font. They are what determine the letter or symbol embossed.

Did you get the whole kit? It should have come with 3 type wheels and a hard case.
