This is the episode where Red Dwarf really started getting good.

0:45 - Berni Inns were a chain of steakhouses. They were sold to Whitbread in 1995, who assimilated them into their Beefeater steakhouses.

Rimmer has a simulated helmet on. The computer is projecting him into the game.

Another fun fact about this episode is that they filmed the beach scenes in Rhyl in Wales during freezing cold weather and so making it appear as if they were in an exotic location like Barbados proved to be quite difficult!🙂🙂🙂

funny how someone 30 yrs later just slowly realises this writing is just on a whole nother level.

I think there's room here for a reminder that, even if VHS has been consigned to history, vinyl and cassette and CD are still around in some capacity and sales seem to be experiencing an uplift. If this misinterprets the future is that it continues to believe the consumer is still in charge.

The first two Red Dwarf novels really go into detail about Better than Life, and all the unpleasantness it causes in reality

You were pretty spot on with your assessment. In the Red Dwarf novel 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers', ' this version of Better Than Life was an early one. People got bored with things just appearing in front of them. So the creators devised a much more insidious version that worked on subconscious desire. Giving people things they didn't know they wanted. And producing enough of a strong fantasy that leaving the game became almost impossible. The crew ended up trapped for months in the book. Though it ended much the same - Rimmer's brain rejecting good things!

Another great episode! There is actually a book based on this episode that tells the story in more detail but I haven't read it myself as I'm not much of a novel reader!🙂🙂🙂

The thing about red dwarf is DO NOT TRY TO MAKE SENSE OF IT…. It will melt your brain

Yes you're correct, as Holly once repeatedly said; _'Everyone Dave, everyone's dead Dave...'_
The writers often do either forget, deliberately ignore or just plain don't care about established 'plotpoints' for the purposes of either simple dialogue or just to shake things up.
Though I think in this case the writers were clearly fully aware, just you jumped the gun on that a little soon!

I totally sympathize with Rimmer's inability to believe that good things might happen. Even when they do. That's really a big part of the British make-up right there. Which is ultimately what we're laughing at. And, my God, were they cold filming this stuff. The out-takes on location is of a group of guys occasionally toying with the possibility of hypothermia.

Re: Would Rimmer, being a hologram, be able to play the game - Short answer, Yes. Long answer, he couldn't wear a real helmet, but Holly could simulate one/directly connect his simulated mind to the software of the game; he's a simulation in any case so Holly can do what he likes... A scary thought. I think the game would be nice in small doses & only if you could ok any changes/fantasies before they came true, we saw what happened with Rimmer!

I like to think for the sake of this story as to maybe perhaps in the future videos do make a comeback similar like the vinyls did theres also talk at the moment about tape recorders making a comeback.

In a later series they do finally exit the game Better Than Life and return to reality.

The game is an addictive thing the book infinity welcomes careful drivers goes into detail. Basically you can forget the point you started playing and you can essentially wither away and die. The news that Rimmer was watching while it doesn't go into details it was gonna say that all copies of the game must be turned in since it was highly dangerous. The version that they had here was the last copy or something

Technology doesn't stop here. Maybe in the future we will have triangular video cassettes and 4.3 screens.
    Pretty unlikely I guess....
Mind you, whoever thought vinyl would be popular again?

what I've found watching people under 40 react to things is that everything has to be explain straight away, they can't just fill in the blacks themselves or just have patience and maybe things will get explained latter on. and usually they miss the explanation because it's given before the act actually happens

The Harley motorbike in this episode belonged to my next door neighbour and because the actor who played Lister couldn’t ride it my neighbour had to dress like him and ride it hence you only see it from behind 🤣 filmed on the exotic location of Rhyl beach

The Red Dwarf reactions are great. I would recommend, when you have the time, The Thin Blue Line starring Rowan Atkinson as an extremely good (yet much underrated) British sitcom.

The way you're doing it here we miss the setup of the jokes.

Better than Life is computer generated, and so is Rimmer. It would be even easier to put him into the game than Lister and Cat, as he wouldn't need an physical interface for his brain. The helmet he is "wearing" is only there to help with the illusion that Rimmer still has a body, just like his clothing.

My handwriting is awful and actually almost identical to my brother's. I don't know what that means. He's 11 years and 1 day older than me, so it shouldn't really mean anything at all. Outside of random genetic shuffling. But, yeah, I feel like an oddity for being able to draw with a pencil or pen (which I could do a full decade before this went out).
