Last time I shot this video on a blue (thought it was a black since there was a sign for "advanced skiing") but it was a blue and everyone laughed at me in the comments. So I re-shot this video at Mt Snow towards the end of last season. Here it is for you to enjoy...

@@willnichols5516 depends where you are on the east coast. Mid to northern Vermont blacks are typically more challenging than the smaller resorts or southern vt & nh. Conditions are usually a lot icier on steeper east coast runs too which can make it more challenging for beginners & intermediates. Not trying to get into a debate on what coast is harder because in general the larger west coast mountains have more challenging trails black dia to black dia.

To the folks that are saying this run is like a blue out west, you've obviously never skied it. I've skied this run as well as all the Epic pass resorts in New England, and I've skied all over Colorado (Vail, Snowmass, Crested Butte, etc). It's black because it's fairly steep and sustained, somewhat narrow, and they allow it to get a bit bumpy. It's the same as single blacks I've skied out west except that the snow can get MUCH TRICKIER with ice, AND you get to dodge more skiers. So no, it's not like a blue run in the Rockies, nor is it a double black with trees and cliffs. It's your typical single black run at any major resort. The camera always flattens things out.

A good pair of carving skis helps, I just bought a pair of Rossignol 86 ti skis best grip on ice I have ever skied, bombed down this trail in similar conditions, no problems slipping on the ice.

Here's a Thumb saving tip for you. Put your hand through the straps of your pole from underneath and then hold the strap and the pole handle. Doing it your way, when you fall, you will reach out with your hand, you won't be able to let go of the pole and your thumb will end up getting bent back. Also, don't ski so fast into congested areas because if you lose control, your momentum will send you into other people. You ski like you drive a car. Follow the Rules of the Road and you will be a much safer skier.

Hi John, the whole point is that we picked one of the easiest black runs we could find, since this is a video on how to ski your FIRST black run. I even say that at the beginning “ask a local which is the easiest black etc..” you can see the sign at the beginning of the video, so you know it is graded black, but not a hard one, just a few steep sections (which don’t really look steep on camera) thus this would be a recommended first black for a lower intermediate skiier.

But if you look for general videos on how to improve technique like how to parallel turn, how to carve etc… those should be useful. We should have a few of those kinds of tutorials coming later in the season

  • @artpro5930

I grew up in New England and have skiied almost everywhere. I'm old and think wearing a helmet is weird (probably should get on board). As for my skill level, I'm not a super-fan of double-black diamonds, but I most enjoy single black diamond runs. Blue runs I just do flat out.
In any case, this indeed looks like a pretty easy black diamond run, even for New England, but that's not the point of the video! You can do a Black Diamond runs explainer video on any slope. This is not a *ick measuring contest about "Who has the toughest Black Diamond Runs?"
Also, skiiers outside of NE have no idea how much harder it is to ski on ice. West Coast skiiers, in my experience, are blown away about how terrible NE can get with ice. They're used to deep powder. I've spoken to a number of non-New-England skiiers who have never skiied on ice and have no idea how to deal with it.
So, for all the non-NE skiiers shit-talking how easy this looked, try a serious black diamond run in NE that is almost all ice. You'll shit your pants when you see there's no snow for over 200' of ice before a thick berm of snow at the bottom.
As for the content, I agree with everything presented, but would add some points aboud skiing on ice. Firstly, you can slow your momentum across a sheet of ice. I find the best strategy is quick back and forth with hard presses into the ski edges, usually behind the boot. The primary goal is to make sure the ski edges are parallel with the shape of the snow that the bottom of the ice so you can skid directly into it.
The times I didn't skid into the berm parallel, the non-aligned ski gets ripped off from all the snow at the bottom of the ice sheet. Another note for the non-New-England skiiers, how good are you at skiing with one ski after your other ski got ripped off from a pile of snow at the bottom of a massive sheet of ice?
