What joy and memories this brings. Memories of watching 5 nations matches in the 70s as a youngster with my late father. The mesmeric handling of the French and Welsh(and occasionally England). That Bennett try on 13:05 still raises goosebumps. Allied to the fantastic, incisive commentary of Bill Mcclaren, Nigel Starmer Smith and Cliff Morgan, simply magic.
The number of offsides, crossing and forward passes...esp from the French...are amazing. Eng were dreadful weren't they. Seemed to make about 8 changes per match.
It may be me - but I get the impression from the tries shown that teams throughout the 70's were more willing to use the width of the field than today. Today you see forwards being used as 'battering rams' around the rucks - unwilling to move the ball more than a foot away from the posts. A lot more tries were created back then it seems.
@@JP1234815 I was being a bit facetious - yes, I think you're right. Players were much more ready to run the ball then and forward play was a lot more limited tactically and territorially - forwards weren't as big then and they weren't generally as fit so they didn't dominate games the way they [sometimes] do today. Handling looked bad in those days, but I think a lot of it was to do with the balls, which looked like a nightmare to catch and pass, especially when wet.
@@robicenco1 It was an amateur game then, so teams only spent a fraction of the time they do today on defence, attacking moves etc etc and by the 60th-70th minute both teams were usually absolutely spent and tackles would be missed creating far more open play than today. Today, large, lucrative contracts can be won or lost by a defeat so there's now more riding on results than ever before leading to far more conservative play. In the 70's teams could only bring subs on due to injury rather than tactical moves, Has professionalism led to better play? That's for people to judge subjectively.

A distinct paucity of quality English tries over this period sadly until 1980.

Was Mike Slemen definitely 77 ? I thought it was 1979 with Charles Kent "the big 14 stone man" ?
Charles Kent scored that great try against Scotland in '77 from the scissors move with Martin Cooper. Kent's last cap was in '78.

Unfortunately defences have come a long way.
Unfortunately law changes have made the game more like rugby league.
@ldfreitas9437 agreed. Too much control of the ball on the ground by tackled players. They need to bring turnover ball back into the game.
