- It is the first day of the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar and it will be a smaller one this year, with 500 stalls. Organisers say this is due to development around the area, which has reduced the space available. Meanwhile, businesses say the bazaar is losing its lustre, with some cutting back on the number of booths they are renting, or not wanting to be part of the event. Nadirah Zaidi has more.

The landlords are the toxic ones
Rental cost is crazy in singapore. No one can earn anything after deducting it
It is up to the food stalls and businesses to boycott and reject high rent to pressure landlords to lower them.
@@noproblematallmate this is what sg ppl lack of..
Not even rental cost crazy, how can Pasar Malam rent double when commercial property rent never increase in the last decade, this is the truth, can read URA the commercial rental index.
Problem is the food are too expansive too too expansive for a pasar malam food. Rental shld go down to help these stall holder. Its a once a year event hopefully it will continue..
Rental per Ramadan month should keep below 3000 SGD per booth , 15000 SGD per booth is crazy too expensive.
True,I dare not eat their food as the vendors will use the cheapest ingredients for food.Cant blame them 15K rental, not forgetting their long hours, and also food costs.
Should stop having bazaar..Greedy ppl leeches money to much.
landlords are the winners
Lower footfalls are mainly due to the closure of Tanjong Katong Complex which was a very popular place for the Muslims to shop during normal times!!!!!
Some of these merchants have moved to Kinex Mall, City Plaza and Joo Chiat Complex.
The high rent cost literally meaning the renters are indirectly working for the landlords. When using footfall to calculate sales are not accurate .many Singaporean are crossing to Malaysia for majority of the purchasing needs. The high rents only cause the renters of the stall to be working aimlessly without an achievable target.
Singapore people are not lazy but majority of SME , Small operators are taken for a ride for their efforts. Working off their ass and get rip off for their efforts. All ends paying high rent.
Does not make sense to rent at the bazaar. Seriously you are just working for the landlords.
Exactly
Commercial Retail rent the last decade didn't even increase. Meanwhile Pasar Malam rent in one decade doubled. Like seriously, go reflect, why the hell should you pay the Pasar Malam rent? You businesses do the maths and ask yourself whether you should rent this many stalls.
15K rental for short term. This is gamble
Really? That atrocious.
so expensive , it becomes a money grab for organiser ? footfall doesnt translate to sales , it says alot about the pricing ? demand and supply at the end of the day , keep being greedy for sg govt and sg bazzar then we will lose a heritage
You realise the happy atmosphere for events in sg only is around international events. Our local ones always are lacking
I enjoy going to the Ramadan bazaar at Geylang Serai. 😊
Fantastic! S'poreans are very rich indeed. Many thanks to the PAP govt for making this possible.❤❤
Dont know why govt doesnt mitigate the rental costs for the Geylang Bazaar. Its truely lost its magic with the lesser stalls and nice food
Rental cost is high pls expect food price to be high. This is how businesses work. Blame the bazaar organisers.
Thank you landlords and gov for.making pasar malam not fun anymore. No rent for this should be above 5000
Home based food businesses are winning for sure
Rental is the best business for govt... 😮😮😮
min 3 dollars an item? might as well buy chicken wing pack from NTUC nearby and oven at home, also 3 dollars plus and quite full.
Cannot blame them,15K rental excluding food cost. Also the vendor will use the cheapest ingredients not of gd quality.
If its for 400 to 500 a day. You have to sell 300 to 400 vadai a day just for rent. Its all in the footfall lah. I usually buy back 8 to 10 home a time. I agree that some will buy 5 to 6 or lesser. RCs and PA organisation should bring our uncles and aunties to experience our nostalgic Pasar Malams. Serai Raya Pasar Malam is not the usual pasar malam. People should support as much as the support grab food or foodpanda. Go down to experience it. No mask..no social distancing.
Hygienic is very important.I went to the River hongbao last mth and I bought some vadas for my children to eat fr the small pasar malam. The Indian man used his BARE hands to put the green chillies into the vadai. We all know how dirty money is.
@@spong2544 Yes, hygiene is the most important thing. I always reject green chilli. Its too hot raw with all the seeds.
I bought 5 vadais fr the river hongbao at the garden by the bay food pasar malam during the cny.The man used his BARE hand to put green chillis into the vadais while collecting money. We all knw how dirty money is.Why didht he use the tongs.
Should have asked him there and there Asspong.
Garment are to blame plus greedy ppls.
Paying $10 to $15k for rental is simply ridiculous!
Stalls should boycott these bazaars until they bring the rental down.
Poor vendors ,12K rental ,need to sell that amount to cover the rental.
As long as i make money,i don't care about you...
That's WSG...
Instead of calling for tender,WSG should run the bazaar itself...
This way the rental rates for space can be lowered...
I paid you more than 2 million dollars, definitely i want to get back the amount plus some profits...
S$15,000 for a stupid space? Omg...One day need to make S$500 just to break even. Thats ridiculous. It should be only 4 digits, under 10k each. That fella lost S$100k last year, this year still dare to come. Omg. Is it really so profitable that they are willing to take such huge risks?
Supply and demand. Lots of malays going jb for food and shopping.
Just go to JB bazaar. Geylang bazaar has lost its essence.
Every year they interview the same vendor. 😅
Govt and the banks make money first before you. Don't need to complain and make noise.
Oh, it's just so heart-wrenching to see those food vendors at Geylang's Ramadan Bazaar. I mean, come on, the cost of food is sky-high, and don't even get me started on tent rental prices. So, naturally, they've got to sell their grub at premium rates.
This whole mega Ramadan event thing is just too rich for my blood. It's nothing like the Ramadan Bazaars back in Malaysia, which are a whole different ball game. Over there, the stall rentals are reasonable, and you've got a smorgasbord of food choices, not to mention the lively atmosphere.
Let's talk about the real winners here: the ORGANIZATION behind it all. They're rolling in dough while the poor vendors are left high and dry. Profit, profit, profit - that's all they care about, without giving a second thought to the struggling vendors. It's a total bust for the Geylang folks. Talk about a major bummer!
Stop Malay Genocide in Singapore
No genocide in Singapore. Stop lying.

I thought is famous for red light district??
Year in year out landlords are laughing to the bank at the expenses of sellers and buyers. Wonder why the govt doesn’t step in and instead let the free market comes into play? Just let everyone lost at the profit of one organisation. Practically sick mentality of doing business for people on the street imo.
Isn't it already free market ? If government intervenes it wouldn't be free market anymore right ?
@@TFRO_madRobots at the expenses of free market,it’s only killing the trade itself with the landlord hoarding the profits, thus one day you will see no one Will patronise the pasar malam anymore and perhaps goes to neighbour country for pasar malam. Well these festive events there is should have a cap on rental, just imagine your burger ramlee comes from a mere price of $5 bounced to $15 per burger due to rental, the one getting the pinch is the seller and buyer while the landlords will have the last laugh at the expense of users.

The government should step in and do something about it if to make sure rental is not out of control.
