The Story of Peas & Yaks | Story of Todnam (Pin Valley, Spiti) - 4/6

  • It is amazing how something as simple as the pea crop could have such an interesting story behind it.
Introduced some 30 years back, the humble pea has drastically improved the lives and fortunes of the people living in Pin Valley and Spiti. This story of the peas is the story of the synergy between the people of pin valley, their animals and the mountains in their backyard.

Personally, I feel that places such as Todnam should remain pure and untouched by tourism. But the villagers feel otherwise and feel left out of the tourism boom that places like Mudh experience. It is not really my place to stand in the way of their aspirations.
If you like to visit Todnam then please get in touch with my friend Nawang Tanzin. It is his dream to open the first homestay in the village. His number is 94186 02537. This is the most I can do and I feel guilty for doing this. Please do not comment/message me asking for more details about the village.

If you want to be grateful for your privilege, there are like a million other videos on youtube showing poverty, hunger et al.

An awesome video, really as simple but impactful as you are.
The best lines at 6.15 are " The villagers coax the Yaks into doing this hard work by singing songs which praise the strength & beauty of the Yaks " ..... Amazing !!!!!!
What a concept. Must say, we urbanites are more illiterate than some of those un-read awesome village people of the mountains.

Everything was good except one thing, the rope which is tied across the nose of yaks, I can see during ploughing or in any situation, they used to pull rope which is tied to yaks, it seriously hurts them😞
This is Inhuman. We also have domesticated cattles in past in Uttarakhand, and I m against it.Infact we buy animals and our fjob is to remove it.There have been cases where the nostril part is totally damaged and u will see maggots crawling over there, some even tie brass rings across nose....this is for what just to Tame them. Disgusting.

It's too much for the young ones or old woman in the video, and of course 2 sacks - 100 kg for the little donkey? It's too harsh for the animal too. Isn't it reasonable to do it in half size sack - 25 kg each?

very good video but the folk song got a bit aggressive and distracting . I find the yaks being pulled by the rope in their nostrils really torturous. It must be painful. isnt there any other way to pull them around ?

6:13 Ok honestly that’s really horrible and cruel how they drag the yak with a nose ring like that to force it to work harder, it’s literally gasping like it’s being tortured.

hmm so this is India as well, why then do we see only slums and city madness? And nonsense travel vlogs focusing on eating and stupid jokes?
