I just finished learning this whole song! thank you Steve. Your tutorials are so well put together. You break everything down so well. This will be my 5th completed song from you. I have finished Piano man (with harmonica), My Life , Just the way you are, and Movin out. Thank you for making these videos.
How long does it take a beginner to learn this song? I've been doing music most of my life but playing guitar and bass, so I've got the music in me, and my fingers are limber but not limber for playing piano.
@@BladeJones It doesn't take long at all to learn most of Steve Lungrin's tutorials. The key is playing super slow at first focusing on accuracy. That speeds up the learning process. I also like the way Steve chunks most of his tutorials. Learning the song in 4 parts (intro, verse, chorus, bridge) helps you memorize it. I think it took me 3-4 days to get comfortable with Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me. And everyday I make it a point to at least go through it once, at any tempo. Have about 6 songs I rotate through daily.
You know, I'm 34 and just started to play piano 7 months ago. I thought this video was gonna be way too hard and advanced for me. Now I'm just thrilled, cause it seems as though I'll pull this off! I am at the part where Billy starts singing (so I've alreday learnt what you called the hardest part of the song^^). You are an amazing man with an amazing talent and an amazing teacher. This is life changing stuff right here! Thanks ever so much! Rene (from Austria).
I'm the one who is thrilled! Thanks so much for the compliments, but you are the one doing the work so be sure to pat yourself on the back for a job well done! Keep up the great work, and thanks for letting me know this made a difference, Steve
as a 63 year old struggling with my love of the piano I thank you for your patience and time to put these videos together you inspire me to keep learning definitely the best on the web. I've always wanted to play billy Joel's souvenier a small but beautiful song any chance for a lesson on that one thanks again.
Thanks Steve don't listen to any of the ass hole's negative comments, your an excellent teacher. Your very clear in teaching a complex song and I like the way you go over the part again and again to kinda drill the part in.
I'm an older guy, who used to play piano as a young boy, because my parents forced me to take lessons. Due to influences at the time (Beatles & Stones etc) I only wanted to play guitar; which I've been doing all my life. I'm not a bad guitarist; if I may be so bold. However, I've grown to see that the greatest musical instrument of all IS the piano. Sadly, I lost a great deal of what little skill I had back then, but I'm thinking that it might be like the bicycle; it comes back to you. I've always felt that this was possibly my favorite piano composition of all time, and always wanted in my heart to learn it. Due to your meticulous dissection of this arrangement, my dream of actually playing this piece may come to pass. I'm going to give it my complete attention and effort. I'm thinking it will take me 6 months to a year based on other similar projects in music I've undertaken. But I just wanted to thank you for making it possible for me to have a starting point. I was amazed at what I learned in one day, in just a few hours of on-line instruction. I will check in with you periodically if you don't mind. I'm sure there will be a few times I'll get stuck. But it's great that there are folks like you out there willing to share their knowledge and talents with the "less fortunate"! lol. Thanks
I've owned a keyboard two days. Never touched one in my life, really doing well with this. About 15 minutes in. I play guitar so got a bit of a grip of it. I'm glad you say what the notes are in the chords, l can't go wrong then. thanks for your hard work, I'm very grateful. I'm still going to learn some theory and practice the dull stuff. Thanks again.
Your help here is priceless. I am an intermediate pianist on my best day and a sixteen year veteran of guitar and bass. Thank you for breaking things down in a fashion that helps me clearly see what my hands need to be doing!
Incredible tutorial as per usual! For anyone who wants a laugh, play it at half speed to listen to Drunk Steve teach you how to play this. Made me laugh more than once (though watching half speed is VERY helpful during chapter 3 where your fingers can get totally lost) Keep 'em coming Steve!

Billy Joel and Elton John are my favourite songwriters and I am so appreciative that you have taken the time to show us how to play these amazing songs! You've earned yourself a subscriber!
WOW what a detailed analysis of a Billy Joel song...every time i listen to you i learn somethin new.. it almost feels like Billy Joel himself is teaching me this song..great job .may .God continue to bless your giving spirit.determination, skills ,talents and hard work...
Thank you so much for this I have not had a lesson in my life but you explain this so well that I can actually play it, that's some talent you've got there. Congrats!
I have been playin piano off and on for about 3 weeks now an this video is helping me so much. I've been dining this song since I was a little kid. Thanks so much!!! I'm almost through the hardest part and I'm loving it!! Thank you for making this possible!
Thanks a lot for the free tutorial. As a beginning piano player (I play guitar) I would suggest you play thru the sections less but say the notes you are playing or spell the chords starting with the notes in the left hand then right hand just once (not every time) for each chord. It will clarify things immensely. Thanks again.
What a awesome teacher you are. ! I would pay BIG money to study under your expertise if only you lived in Fullerton,Ca. I picked this little keyboard up during the pandemic and because of you I'm already playing a Billy Joel song. Keep the tutorials flowing. Your a blessing!!!!! Robert August
I've been playing the piano for a while now but haven't been able to read music, this video is very helpful I also watched the Scenes of an Italian Restaurant video and they both helped me tremendously! Thank you!
A couple of months into this tutorial. You're a great teacher and coach, Steve. It is very slow going for me, but making progress daily. Your comments, and inspirational words are fantastic. It's as if Billy Joel were teaching me to play this......maybe better. I see you don't check this site often, but I'm going to add my comments at various milestones, because this is quite an undertaking for me. But it IS happening, and I'm not quitting until it's mine.
I don't respond to every comment Paul, but I read them all as they come in. I'm never far away, and will probably return to making lots of new videos again at some point in the future....just focused on other projects now. Keep up the great work and I couldn't be happier that you are benefiting from the tutorial! "Piano Man" Steve
Wow. Nice surprise to hear from you this morning! I feel great knowing that you are aware that I'm working on your tutorial....every day. I'm going to play this piece one day, front to back. The chords and changes are just amazing; beautiful. Really a pleasure watching this come together. Can't thank you enough for putting it within reach for me.
Always wanted to learn the intro correctly! I could start from the main C riff, but in the beginning of the intro that Ab7/Bb threw me off. I also think it's easier to roll the notes than not to in this song. It just feels natural. Thank you! GREAT tutorial!!!
hi steve, i'm working on this song and i have to drop you a comment.....you do such a great job at teaching these songs to us. you play the parts several times over to make sure it's clear what your doing and i love that. the great thing about the videos is as soon as you do get it, just jump ahead to the next section. your never have to sit and watch it over and over if it isn't necessary. i noticed you have close to 300 likes and i'm sure there are thousands more that didn't click the like button and people that appreciate what you're doing need to click the like button and let you and those concerned know. and as far as the 14 dislikes, what in the world do these people want! i think some are just jealous, mean, can't quite get it and take it out on you........who knows for sure......there's a lot of yo-yo's out there. anyway, enough for my rant! just wanted you to know i appreciate everything you do for us piano lovers, take care ........Ralph
Wow! Super piece of work! I've almost got it down after a couple days. You've made it so easy for me. Thanks for all you do! Did the piano man last week too... Thanks again for that!
This is awesome, and helpful, and, does anyone else think that Steve's voice sounds like Toby's from This Is Us? In my mind, it's Toby teaching me to play this song.
Hey Steve! Thank you for your time and effort in making this tutorial. I’m 15 and now have learned two songs that you’ve covered. I’ve got She’s Always a Woman and New York State of Mind in the works. Thanks for your help!
Thank you for your work. I mean it, these are the best tutorials I've ever watched and It helped me (and I'm sure many others) improve ther piano game a lot. Not many people are willing to dedicate as many time and effort into this as you do
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm very appreciative and currently learning this as well as some of your others - Scenes, etc. Thanks again from another subscriber.
Steve, I have been grinding on this video for weeks now learning this. You do a fantastic job showing folks like myself. So thank you! Also, check out Tom Seals cover of this (Ont Sofa). They do a lick after the “rhythm and blues” lyric that is fantastic, I’m trying to incorporate into yours. I actually studied your piano man tutorial months back and have a functional version now. I recently got a new (to me) digital piano and have been so blessed having your tutorials to learn from. I actually plan on posting a “thank you” video dedicated to you playing piano man when I find a way to record it. You have been a marvelous instructor to me. Thank you so much for what you do!
AMAZING tutorial! Great job! Was wondering if you could make a tutorial only on the intro. Billy plays a longer version(improvised) and then one specifically is the intro of New York State of Mind during Shea stadium. Thanks :)
This is the first song on the piano I've ever tried my hand at and after lots of practice I can now finally play it from beginning to end. A very big 'thank you' for this tutorial (this has got to be one of my all-time favourite songs)! On a side note, I was wondering if there was any chance you might do a tutorial for the version of St. James Infirmary played by Hugh Laurie on his album 'Let Them Talk'? I've always loved that intro.
Hey Steve, just wanted to thank you for all of your awesome work. I posted a sort of mini cover of this song and i felt the need to credit you so I did in the description and the comments. Your video has helped me perfect this song and i have checked out some of your other videos and they are all great as well! One more thing, I saw where you have done an acoustic version of Root Beer Rag and it was amazing! I was wondering if you could maybe post a tutorial of that. It would be a great help as I am currently learning the song and it is pretty fast and hard to play by ear, and knowing your excellent way of teaching it would help a lot! Thanks again for all of your hard work, Jo
Thank you my friend....just visited your site and watched your video. Well done....it will only get better with time and practice, but it already sounds great! Keep up the great work and make sure you're having fun with it! :-) Steve
Extremely helpful , I have the piano sheet but the way you play it is way richer and more blusie , is there a way to get the scores exactly the way you play it ?
Hey Steve! My next Billy song to learn was between this, and Pressure, but couldn't find a pressure lesson? Obviously I don't expect you to do EVERY Billy song, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't just missing it. Did you happen to do a Pressure lesson? Either way, Thanks for all the amazing work you put in to help us all out. Hope you're well!
Hey Vinny! This is actually the second request in three days I've gotten for "Pressure"....I'm just prepping to do a new tutorial, and that is probably the direction I'm heading for....so some time in the very near future, watch for that. Thanks!
Awesome! I'm sure I could "rookie" my way through it, but your lessons always give the songs flare and pizzaz that I wouldn't be able to figure out on my own. Working on New York State as we speak. That should keep me busy for quite some time lol. Thanks man
Fabulous tutorial Steve. Much appreciated. Can I ask what "piano setting" you use ? I can't seem to get that jazz sound effect you get. Thanks again. D
Hey Steve, I've been following your videos.. they are great, thank you! I have a question. at 1:01:15 you play the lick and then get to and F-Chord over G. I'm having a hard time figuring out how the singing goes to this because this is the part where he says "new york state of mind" and it does not seem to be match or sound at all like what he is doing in the album. Here is the corresponding section from the album th-cam.com/video/ol0dPJdzm1M/w-d-xo.htmlm15s. Could you offer some guidance?
This is a fairly advanced song....but I would gage it more on how you're feeling while you work with it. If it is frustrating you because everything just feels too complicated and difficult, then it might be too much to take on at this time for you. But....if you work with it slowly and find that you're enjoying it, even if progress is slow, then it is helping you. Different people respond to different things at different stages of their development as players, so a "one size fits all" approach to what you should be trying to learn from really doesn't work. But the ultimate key is to check in with yourself, something nobody else can do but you, and see if you're getting satisfaction and joy out of the journey.....if you're mostly getting frustration and a nagging sense that you'll never be able to do it, you're most likely trying to make too big of a leap. If you're feeling like it's fun and exciting and you view yourself as making progress on something that really turns you on, even if it's slow and minor progress....then you're moving in the right direction. Hope that helps! :-)
+STOPBEINGWILLIAM Thanks....that one in the video is a Roland Fantom (original model). It's old, but has been a great instrument for me for over 12 years now. I'll probably upgrade to a Yamaha Motif this year (2016)....I would have already done that years ago when they completely took over the market, but all the keyboards I already owned were in perfect operating condition and I couldn't justify not using them. :-)
+billyjoel7 - thanks for swift response. Nice choice, I am currently undesided myself between getting the PSR S770 and a Moxf8. Cant afford a Motif at the minute or do it justice playing it. Keep up the great work and thanks.
+STOPBEINGWILLIAM Understand that completely. Whatever you get, just remember.....what you do with your fingers is much more powerful than the instrument you're playing on. Learn to play well....anything you play on will sound good. Don't learn to play well....no instrument will make up the difference. And have FUN! :-)
Sometimes he names the chords once then proceeds through it so fast that I have to scroll back on a tiny pixelated cell phone if I want to see it again. It''s driving me insane slowly.
I'm 84...play by chord..NY state of mind..main melody only...intro too difficult with all the riffs. I began piano @ 70 ...chord method. Can play just about everything else
Would be nice if you would start the tutorial by playing the piece you want to teach, first! Not by teaching the individual chords up front! I think it would help to bring it all together if you just play it at the start! Just my opinion!
Or, here’s a thought… I’ll keep doing things the way I do them, and you can just watch somebody else’s tutorial who fits your style better instead of criticizing people who put free content out….. that’s a pretty novel concept 🤷♂️🙄
1:33:00 if you want to hear him play the entire song :)
Nathan Young thank you:)
you legend
Bless your soul
Thanks

This is awesome, and helpful, and, does anyone else think that Steve's voice sounds like Toby's from This Is Us? In my mind, it's Toby teaching me to play this song.
Hey Steve!
Thank you for your time and effort in making this tutorial. I’m 15 and now have learned two songs that you’ve covered. I’ve got She’s Always a Woman and New York State of Mind in the works. Thanks for your help!

Thank you for this tutorial. I'm very appreciative and currently learning this as well as some of your others - Scenes, etc. Thanks again from another subscriber.
Thanks Kevin! I'm glad they are helping you....enjoy and happy playing!

totally awesome tutorials I learn a lot every time

Thank you so much! Best teacher ever!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS AMAZING TUTORIAL!
Man you are such a great teacher, words can't describe how much I appreciate the effort you put into this, excellent teaching teach ;)
Thanks for watching! :-)
Thank you very much! You are my piano teacher.
I want to learn the live solo that’s amazing ! No one has explained it !
I love you for this tutorial dude!
That's amazing, thank you so much to give us this "little" gem, you have now a new subscriber and disciple from Italy :D
THIS IS AMAZING
Thank you so much for this tutorial, i absolutely love the piece and the explanation that goes with it
Thank you very much. Extremely helpful.
I love all of your videos your tutorials are so good
Wow! Great tutorial and you've got an amazing voice too!
AMAZING tutorial! Great job! Was wondering if you could make a tutorial only on the intro. Billy plays a longer version(improvised) and then one specifically is the intro of New York State of Mind during Shea stadium. Thanks :)
thanks for this great tutorial! greetings from vienna :)
Great tutorial
I've got some bad news Steve- I got arrested by the "New York State of Mind Police"~ It was fun! Haha!
Well played sir. ;-)
Thanks for this, especially the last few chords, the E flat Aflat bit had me baffled ..and now it doesnt! Appreciated!!
I've always loved that intro.
this was awesome! finished the whole song. thank you so much!
Thanks again for all of your hard work,
Jo
Thank you my friend....just visited your site and watched your video. Well done....it will only get better with time and practice, but it already sounds great! Keep up the great work and make sure you're having fun with it! :-)
Steve
Thank you thank you sir.
do you have sheet music to follow along with
Wow, thanks. Very helpful!
53:44 for full intro played (after teaching)
Adam Corolla is really good at piano
Nice tutorial!
Thanks! :-)
Extremely helpful , I have the piano sheet but the way you play it is way richer and more blusie , is there a way to get the scores exactly the way you play it ?
I'm afraid not....I'm not too good at transcribing notes. Sorry...the videos are the best I can offer.
Thanks man
any sheet music for this particular version?
Thank you
Thanks Mel....keep up the great work! :-)
Great lesson. Took your time and showed all. Thank you. Are you still in business? Will be glad to donate
Yes I am! Thanks 🙏😎
Fabulous tutorial Steve. Much appreciated. Can I ask what "piano setting" you use ? I can't seem to get that jazz sound effect you get. Thanks again. D

call-and-answnr part great!
Amazing
Hey Steve, I've been following your videos.. they are great, thank you! I have a question. at 1:01:15 you play the lick and then get to and F-Chord over G. I'm having a hard time figuring out how the singing goes to this because this is the part where he says "new york state of mind" and it does not seem to be match or sound at all like what he is doing in the album. Here is the corresponding section from the album th-cam.com/video/ol0dPJdzm1M/w-d-xo.htmlm15s. Could you offer some guidance?
don’t mind these time stamps haha sorry

Wow trying work out what key this is in. Hav a sax friend that’s going to do the solo on sax for me. Is it c ? With many altered chords.
Hey Laurie! Yeah....it's C Major, but with lots of "accidentals" ;-)
Is it a good goal to learn this as an absolute beginner? Is this video suitable for a beginner.
Steve Lungrin Wow. Thank you so much! I have been working on the intro with your video and I have felt amazing playing the piano. Thank you so much!!
Is this from the original sheet music bc some of it doesn't sound like he plays it?
Chapter 2: 15:30
UP TO THE 50 MINS MARK TYPING IN CAPS TO PUMP ME UP TO PULL THROUGH TO THE END
Hi Steve. Thank you so much for doing these tutorials. just out of interest, what make and model is your electric piano?
God send
Steve. How about Kissing a Fool - George Michael.

Ung kay?
???
1:05:00
57:12 after the intro
I thought it was shoenice playing the piano looking at the thumbnail
Sometimes he names the chords once then proceeds through it so fast that I have to scroll back on a tiny pixelated cell phone if I want to see it again. It''s driving me insane slowly.
WeWantBears you can just double tap to the left/right of the pause button (middle of the screen) to skip 10 seconds

did anyone else think he meant nas NY State of Mind
I'm 84...play by chord..NY state of mind..main melody only...intro too difficult with all the riffs. I began piano @ 70 ...chord method. Can play just about everything else

Would be nice if you would start the tutorial by playing the piece you want to teach, first! Not by teaching the individual chords up front! I think it would help to bring it all together if you just play it at the start! Just my opinion!
Not accurate at all
Sorry
Lol….. if you already know how to play it that well why are you watching tutorials?
Talk less...play more, please
Or, here’s a thought… I’ll keep doing things the way I do them, and you can just watch somebody else’s tutorial who fits your style better instead of criticizing people who put free content out….. that’s a pretty novel concept 🤷♂️🙄
I apologize for coming across as rude. Of Course, we all have different methods. Patience not my strong suit...or I'd be a better player.
