  • (5 May 2018) BEAM ME UPSTATE? SHATNER VISITS NY STAR TREK SET REPLICA
    It's like William Shatner got stuck in a Star Trek time warp.

    The 87-year-old actor visited a doppelganger of the original Starship Enterprise set in upstate New York for a fans' weekend on Friday (MAY 4). He wore a dark jacket this time instead of his gold Capt. James T. Kirk shirt, but the command chair was still comfortable and the blinking lights of the bridge were just as he remembered them.

    "This set is exactly the way it was 50-odd years ago," Shatner said. "And it's like it's coming back to a house you might have been born in and you look around and it's like, 'Wow! It's bigger and smaller than I remember. And yet it's the same.'"

    Shatner said the set reminded him of both the emotional moments and the laughs, like when crew members would forget to open the sliding doors as he approached.

    "I'd crash into the door," he said with a laugh. "And then I began to learn to make my own 'whhhoshhh' sound as I went out the door."

    The "Captain on the Bridge" weekend runs Friday and Saturday at a tourist attraction boasting replicas of the original series' bridge, transporter room, sick bay and other sets. Tickets ranged as high as $1,500 for a chance to ask Shatner questions on the bridge, though "red shirt" tickets were $85. The attraction's website made clear "Mr. Shatner is NOT leading tours!"

    Finding a Star Trek set built at the site of an old dollar store near the Vermont border seems highly illogical, but it was a labor of love for local resident James Cawley. The professional Elvis impersonator began the years-long process of building the sets in 1997 after inheriting a copy of the original Enterprise blueprints from a costume designer on the original show.

    At first, Cawley and his crew used the sets to make a series of Star Trek fan films. Now the sets are a tourist attraction.

    Dozens of fans waited outside Friday to greet Shatner, whose TV show went off the air almost 50 years ago. Many, like Glenn Coker of Catskill, New York, wore Star Trek uniforms. They said it was still a thrill to see Shatner.

    "I'm a sci-fi person. Transporters beam me up. All the different things. Phasers," said Coker, who wore a Capt. Kirk shirt. "Plus, Kirk always got the girl."

      There was a continuation to the original series, "Star Trek Continues," led by Vic Mignogna, available on TH-cam. It's a faithful recreation of the original series. Once you get past the initial discomfort of seeing different actors in familiar roles, you feel as though you're watching the original series! th-cam.com/users/StarTrekContinues

      That's only because they stopped re-running the "Get a life, will ya" sketch on Saturday night live. For many years he was a bit contemptuous (my word) of star trek fans. In his book "Get a Life", he admitted it wasn't until Kirk was killed off at the end of filming ST: Generations that Shatner began to become interested in what all the hubbub was about. It shook him deeply because he had been looking forward to killing off the character for a long time. Then suddenly with the deed done, he said it was like a punch in the gut and he took some time coming to grips with it. He actually spent a good amount of time trying to convince studio execs to create a movie in which kirk returns. But in prep for the book "Get a life" he and a ghost writer went to star Trek cons in costumes and interviewed fans to find out why the fans were so rabid for ST. And what he discovered changed his opinion about the fans and about ST in general. In the book, he also apologize to the fans for the "Get a life" sketch.

      @@saiyongdawn7756 That was the second pilot, "Where no man has gone before." If you watch that episode, Gary Mitchell makes a tomb stone for Captain Kirk with the R as the middle initial. You can say its an inconsistency, or imagine Mitchell was simply mistaken. That's up to you. Since it only appears on a prop, it may not have been mentioned in the script. I presume it was never officially added to Kirks bio so a subsequent writer decided to give him a middle initial without even noticing he already had one. You could also imagine its a "Mandela effect" alternate universe thing.

      If I am not mistaken, Leonard Nimoy said that the quality of the scripts for the last shows was going downhill. So to me its better that the series ended right and not over stretched to the point of destruction like The Simpsons for example.
      The best shows are the ones that have short lifespawns because the creativity is used correctly and not for the sake of having another 10 seasons.

Like Star Trek, I absolutely loved Miami Vice and watched it religiously every week. I live in Miami and it was common to see them shooting on location around greater Miami and as great as the show was, the writing in the final two seasons was just AWFUL and there are some episodes that are painfully hard to watch. As much as I loved Vice the series really should have ended sooner.

    Here's a neat little behind the scenes tidbit. Listen carefully if anyone is speaking while the doors open or close. Usually, they timed their dialog so they would not speak while the doors moved, thus giving editors ability to remove the actual door sound and replace it with the fake pneumatic "whoosh" sound. But if an actor is delivering a line while the doors are moving, you can often hear the hollow scratchy sound of the pocket doors moving.

    • @Nash1a
      @Nash1a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robertjones3016 Yes. Listen to any scene without music and you quickly discover why the used music & sound effects so much - to cover the extraneous sounds that didn't belong. There is a scene in the engine room, might be in Court-martial or Enemy Within but its a scene where Kirk is stalking around the engine room. You hear all kinds of small noises that are most likely camera crew etc.

    Many years ago I got to visit the actual Star Trek set. I was standing next to the camera when the first Tribble was sold. Because they were filming on a "Space Station" I was able to roam around the entire Star Trek set....Hell of a memory

    TJ Hooker before Star Trek? You have it backward! I watched Star Trek as a small kid when it was first broad cast. By 3rd grade, the series was in it's 3rd and final season and because it was moved to a later time slot, it was past my bed times so only my older sister could stay up to watch it. I was so envious, so I had to wait until it went into reruns before I could see most of the 3rd season episodes. I still enjoy re-watching Star Trek now and then.

    Yeah, I think we've all seen that in the bloopers where the actor goes to enter the turbolift or through a hatch (door) and crashes square into the door. First time I saw that happen on one of those blooper reels, I thought, 'Ouch!! That's gotta hurt.'

    • @Nash1a
      @Nash1a 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those doors are pretty flimsy though. Its more likely he would have damaged the door before hurting himself substantially.

    I've been to many Trek cons and events over the past 30 years, but I have yet to see Shatner at one. I always get the distinct privilege of meeting someone like Red Shirt #3, killed by energy cloud 6 seconds into his appearance.

      @@wasscm I have grown to re-respect Shatner since he finally apologized to his fans for the "get a life!" crack. But there is still a part of me that wants to see Wil Wheaton punch William Shatnerpants in the gut. In that story, Wil represents every star struck fan ever. And he shouldn't have been treated like that. He was a co-worker, not trash beneath Shatner's feet.

    Whatever else he's done and acted in, he'll always be associated with Star Trek as Captain James T. Kirk. Lenard Nimoy accepted or made peace with the fact that he'd be forever remembered as Mr Spock and wrote his memoirs titled 'I Am Spock'.

    It is such a shame that Desilu Studios failed to preserve the original U.S.S. Enterprise sets from the original "Star Trek" TV series. Of course, understandably they needed that Stage 9 space for other TV series' productions after "Star Trek" was cancelled after the 3rd season in 1968-1969. It is sad that Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelley, Jimmy Doohan, Majel Barrett and Grace Lee Whitney never got the opportunity to visit the recreation of the "Star Trek" Enterprise sets in Ticonderoga, NY.

    Instead of the human race spending time on systemic divide and conquer all these decades, the government couldve spent mental energy and time and resources on futuristic matters. We couldve had a star fleet for real by now. Well maybe one day.😏😔

    Bill wrote, I think, the definitive account of the original ST series in his book, ' Star Trek Memories' This is brilliantly written; factual but never boring; interesting for the may anecdotes; and really funny. The account of the struggle with scripts and the bosses of ST is rivetting stuff. It wasn't all sweetness and light. If you love original ST, get this book! RIP, ST actors and producers; you made television history.

      I have to plug his other book "Get a life". Its less about the trek and more about him finally discovering what all the hubbub was about. He explains how he came to finally value star trek after all these years.
