The best way to start going to the gym is to just show up at the same time every day! Maybe you decide you’re not in the mood in the parking lot and go home, or maybe you only work out for 15 minutes-but that’s ok. Without pressure it’s much easier to form the habit, and eventually it’s just easier to head inside and work out a little bit since you went through the hassle of getting dressed and going there!
I just joined for the first time in my life! It’s doable, even when you don’t feel like it! Literally never thought I could do it but here we are. Good luck!
On “waiting for energy” I don’t think people understand how much energy our digital entertainment sucks from us. I recently cold turkeyed video games and suddenly I’m sleeping on time, getting out to pursue my interests consistently, and all that good stuff. A lot of people cope for their instagram/gaming time when honestly, as far as keeping motivated in your life, they are poison.
i lost my mother a few months ago and watching your videos has really helped. a lot of the things you talk about in these videos are things my mother would say to me and advice she would give. it’s crazy because a lot of the things you’re saying is word for word things she’s said to me and it’s nice to me. So it’s really nice to not only hear these things my mother would tell me but to hear them being expanded upon. That is so true my friend. You will never have enough motivation, you will never be rested enough. You have to do it NOW. People who do it NOW have the same level of stress and lack of motivation as the people who do nothing. But people who do it NOW know there will never be enough motivation to do it. Just go for it.

This video is perfect! Waking up for me is easy because Im excited to get the day started. Im an night owl btw! Attaching habits to existing ones is so easy. I have the habit of brushing my teeth in the morning, I attached exercise and meditating to it. Didn't need to spend a month redirecting my focus on doing the habit because I attached new habits with existing ones. Starting a new habit is easier said than done. When the excuses come in, personally what helps is telling yourself why you'd love it. Why do I have to brush my teeth in the morning? I love making sure my teeth are clean. Why do I have to waste 2 minutes brushing my teeth? it'll be fast and while I brush I can think about day and what I wanna do. These are the thoughts I had when creating this habit 2 years ago. now it's just automatic like a robotic like clock work get up brush teeth. I have given up on habits. There is an alternative. When I think about doing something I let myself off the hook for having to keep at it. So maybe I see something that makes me want to work on something specific on my body, I have a very specific reason and motivation to do it, my why. So it’s not just oh I should excercise… So I do it as much as I feel like while the inspiration is high. Maybe I wonder, why do I never feel like cleaning? I realize it’s because I was looking at it as my job when I really want to focus on reading and writing and my cleaning is a support of that. So I realize why don’t I write? I don’t have a good quiet place to write, so I work on that. There is a lot surrounding things you do that can support what you want, but sometimes you have to go about it in a roundabout way to figure it all out. So I do follow inspiration.

Tell you what, I've been a night owl myself for many years, and what helped me to get up early was simply to use an alarm clock to brutally wake me every morning (sometimes I change the time one hour forward or back if I want to get up later or earlier). I got used to it and often wake up even before the alarm sounds. The time going to bed doesn't really matter. Even today, I often can't sleep in a structured way, but the point is that I woke up at the right time no matter how many hours I slept. Since I get tired when I drink coffee (during the day too), I simply drink coffee even in the evening or at night. To me, the point was to accept that I can't sleep at fixed times. I just take the sleep that I get. Using a nature sounds app on my Echo device helps me fall asleep faster (things like ocean waves or wind with wind chimes). Ever since I've been doing this regularly, it's become very easy now and I don't even think about it anymore. I make things easy for myself, I have food ready to eat, so I don't have to cook in the evening (here in Germany, this isn't common anyway -- people normally eat dinner at noon). But eating anything in the evening is good b/c it gives your body power to sleep. Because we eat only so we can go back to sleep. Thus, eating something in the evening helps me to get to bed earlier. But I don't force myself to get to bed early, I only force myself to get up early (except on weekends, so my body can have more freedom on weekends).
One of the points that this video does a good job of emphasizing is that motivation is fleeting. I love the book Atomic Habits, but I think its most influential lesson is simple: The five minute rule. Just five minutes of doing anything will bring the motivation. If I put on my gym clothes, grab my gym bag and start the car, how am I **not** going to the gym. If I take my laptop and hit the coffee shop, how am I not going to write? Motivation comes after the action. Waiting for motivation or waiting to “feel like it” will never happen, or it’s too rare to rely on. Using this psychology in tandem with systems and habits that work for you is the only way to go.
This is one of the best parts about having a dog. I care so much about their quality of life that I'll step out of my comfort zone to get outside and take care of their needs which benefits me so much in turn.

I’ve always been a morning person so waking up early has never been the problem. However, I used to lounge around for an hour before getting out of bed. Something unexpected that changed that was getting an automatic feeder for my pet and setting it to 6am. She will pester me until I get up to open the door and then I’m like “well, now I’m up” and start my day right then. This external factor had a significant improvement of behavior that I never thought could be solved from a pet feeder. You might give it a try!

24:44 this part is so true. i've been wanting to get a gym membership for a while now. i have such good excuses such as: social anxiety, i've never been to a gym before in my life, i'm a student and it costs a lot, i live with my mom and brother and i have chores in the house to do, including walking my dog, i want to have a job during summer to save up money, i want to visit my grandma in a different city often, i have to wake up in the morning instead of sleeping in because the morning schedule of the gym is cheaper + there will be less people in the gym at that time etc. but NONE of these are good or valid enough. i'm going to apply TODAY for a 4x a month membership and stick to it. i decided! good luck to everyone reading this and watching this video!! we got this

Great video. The theme of positive vs negative connotation (Pavlov training, neurons that fire together wire together, etc.) brings to mind how neurodivergent brains have this experience also yet sometimes in different ways. For example; if you have ADHD and grow up in a household where routines & practices aren’t implemented to support your needs as an ADHD person, it can be that much harder to have a positive association with things like routine and time management. Let alone figuring out which organization tools work for you and what doesn’t, etc… I find this video very useful motivation, and it’s also good to hear that everyone struggles with this, and not just neurodivergents!
Growing up in a household that holds a lot in past and not that open about growth in general makes me feel stuck. I want to make my home the first place feeling that growth but I don’t feel it. I instead feel that push outside(in school) it helped me have that new way of opportunities, but again the home I have is not making a way of it.

I appreciate the knowledge you’re sharing in this video. I wanted to share that a couple years ago, I had to take a job that started at 5:00am. My alarm went off at 3:30. I didn’t even have the willpower to prepare myself in advance of the starting day. But what was interesting is this: the first day I was tired and loopy, but fine. The second day was a little better since I crashed at night and made up sleep. By the third day, it was as if I’d always woken up at 3:30am. I was full of energy.

I just stumbled across this video. I am a closeted trans person, and I just found out relatively recently that one of my parents has a very rare form of cancer. This video has made me realize the complicated feelings I have right now. The reality is, being a trans person is not ideal, and at the same time my life always feels like a ticking clock in the sense that I always feel like I'm running out of time and that I've wasted my life by not being myself. I'm afraid of the treatment I could face if I transition, and I'm afraid of being in my deathbed pre-transition wishing I chose myself over internalized hate. And it's hard to validate your dysphoria when the world hates and kills trans people. And now there's a genuine time clock of the confusion of the illness. Thank you for this video, as hard as it is I think my next steps have to be coming out. Are any trans people watching this? Any advice? For context I am a 20 year old college student.
hi! another closeted 20 yr old trans person here. what's even spookier is i also have a parent who's been diagnosed with kidney cancer for over a year now. (only indicated difference is i'm not a student.) upon reading your comment, i felt a sense of pensive kinship over what you must be going through. i personally have no plans of coming out, not while i still live in my parent's house. because of this, i've found it impossible to feel like my authentic self. since we're sort of in the same boat, i don't know if i'm qualified to give you any advice. i will just say that i hear you loud and clear; it really is an impossible task. to balance the turmoil of who you are not being what others see you as, caring for a parent with a horrifying illness, worrying over the potential falling apart of your relationships if you were to be honest with them, knowing that the life you're going to live is entirely in your own hands... but, yeah. i'd say the first step is to be brutally honest with yourself, accept whatever your reality is. what follows depends on the reality you are going to walk towards. (sorry if that was just a convoluted mess of ramblings. maybe something in there will resonate with you, though. truly hope your situation improves, that both of our parents will be okay, and that whoever you may come out to is understanding and loving. best of luck to you
Fellow trans person here. Just started HRT a week ago and I live with my parents who love leaving FOX News on all day to give you an idea of their ideology. Coming out to them was easily one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, bar none. They took it pretty well, better than I would've expected. They call me by the right pronouns for the most part and have never demeaned me about my transness. My dad was the one who picked up my HRT prescription at the pharmacy last week. Sometimes people surprise you. I was expecting the worst. Sometimes we overthink the worst, but we don't think about the other outcome: what if they love us? Sometimes that idea is scarier to contend with. But even if they don't, I think you deserve to live your life in love and not fear. Life will align itself accordingly, and sometimes there are things you might "lose" along the way, but the people and places and experiences on the other side are greater than any gain you could imagine, because you're aligning yourself with truth, with your heart. You have a beautiful idea of who you are, who you want to become. Transness is spiritual to me, like a calling, an awakening of sorts. That kind of deep seated sense of love and peace, the realest thing there is. There's a lot of stuff in the world to cloud that judgement: opinions, politics, society, doesn't really matter what you call it, it's all just fear. There's a million pretty heavy excuses you could make alone, and I don't blame you in this day and age. But you really only get two choices in life: make choices in love, or be ruled by fear?

Ngl this video made me realize that as I make excuses for big tasks, I also follow these excuses with more for smaller things. For example, to clean my room I love to listen to music but even now I find myself making excuses on how it’s ‘too much work’ to put on music because deep down I know this small task is followed by a bigger one. I definitely think that a lot of my problems can be solved by simply acknowledging these problems. I just listen to music whenever I MUST do something I reeealy don't want to do, like washing the dishes, moving to a new home, building a space ship, terraforming Mars, and the list goes on. Listening to music while doing chores (ex. building your hadron collider) is most likely going to help you keep going.
I've been challenging myself to oaint everyday and I have been, aside from one, for the whole year. And what you said about creating positive connotations with our habits leading them to feel like rewards in and of themselves, it's been so true. Committing to one consistent habit makes it easier to implement new ones ✌🏼🎨
I wanted to add on a little comment, mostly just for myself, on the topic of how we tell ourselves that making these small habits won't lead achieving our big goals: Even if (I'm using my own personal situation here) creating the habit of waking up earlier, doesn't directly effect me making a career for myself in music (the end goal rn). It does prove to myself, that I can ALSO stick with sitting down every day that I can and practicing, or teaching myself something about music production. Which is something that I really struggle with motivating myself to do because it's the one thing that I am not super familiar with in the process, and it is daunting to push through it, especially on days when I don't exactly feel like it. Additionally, improving yourself in any way, is always a net positive, because it will make you feel better about yourself. As well as increase the number of days or the amount of time that you do actually feel good, energized, and motivated to do the things that will get you to your end goal.

I really appreciate this video, and it really helps me when i ask myself how i'm supposed to start something or start a new habit. I haven't ever considered thinking about why i'm scared or why i'm uncomfortable to start something new. Also, the part where you explain using gratitude made it make a lot more sense to me. My dad has told me to start practicing gratitude before, and then he never really goes into more explanation about it, and i'm just like "well duh? Of course, you should be grateful for things. What?". And just in general this video has made me understand how to start a habit a lot more. One thing that helps me form habits is telling myself just do this one tiny step. Like getting out of bed when the alarm goes off “at least get up and go to the bathroom. Then you can decide what to do next.” And then that part of the routine just becomes a routine. And you just keep building it little step by little step. And you won’t have to think about all the steps along the way. You just do the first step and then your body will automatically just do the next steps because you set it up that way.

this honestly kinda organizes my overthinking and hyper-self awareness. ive had a "feel like it" mentality for so so long, and the fact that this video was recommended to me definitely felt like a wake up call lolll. love your perspective and how you compare it to other real life experiences. its pretty comforting knowing im not the only person with a "feel like it" mentality. i hope we all can figure it out in the end :)

That is so true my friend. You will never have enough motivation, you will never be rested enough. You have to do it NOW. People who do it NOW have the same level of stress and lack of motivation as the people who do nothing. But people who do it NOW know there will never be enough motivation to do it. Just go for it.

This video is perfect! Waking up for me is easy because Im excited to get the day started. Im an night owl btw! Attaching habits to existing ones is so easy. I have the habit of brushing my teeth in the morning, I attached exercise and meditating to it. Didn't need to spend a month redirecting my focus on doing the habit because I attached new habits with existing ones. Starting a new habit is easier said than done. When the excuses come in, personally what helps is telling yourself why you'd love it. Why do I have to brush my teeth in the morning? I love making sure my teeth are clean. Why do I have to waste 2 minutes brushing my teeth? it'll be fast and while I brush I can think about day and what I wanna do. These are the thoughts I had when creating this habit 2 years ago. now it's just automatic like a robotic like clock work get up brush teeth. Thanks for making this video and I hope my comment helps other people enjoy the rest of your day :)

I have given up on habits. There is an alternative. When I think about doing something I let myself off the hook for having to keep at it. So maybe I see something that makes me want to work on something specific on my body, I have a very specific reason and motivation to do it, my why. So it’s not just oh I should excercise… So I do it as much as I feel like while the inspiration is high. Maybe I wonder, why do I never feel like cleaning? I realize it’s because I was looking at it as my job when I really want to focus on reading and writing and my cleaning is a support of that. So I realize why don’t I write? I don’t have a good quiet place to write, so I work on that. There is a lot surrounding things you do that can support what you want, but sometimes you have to go about it in a roundabout way to figure it all out. So I do follow inspiration.
I love how there’s no judgement here. I’m not being berated or told I need to be better by you, I’m told by someone who is human too, going through the same thing telling me how they’re figuring it out. Thank you, we’ve got this, we’re gonna make our goals come true!

Tell you what, I've been a night owl myself for many years, and what helped me to get up early was simply to use an alarm clock to brutally wake me every morning (sometimes I change the time one hour forward or back if I want to get up later or earlier). I got used to it and often wake up even before the alarm sounds. The time going to bed doesn't really matter. Even today, I often can't sleep in a structured way, but the point is that I woke up at the right time no matter how many hours I slept. Since I get tired when I drink coffee (during the day too), I simply drink coffee even in the evening or at night. To me, the point was to accept that I can't sleep at fixed times. I just take the sleep that I get. Using a nature sounds app on my Echo device helps me fall asleep faster (things like ocean waves or wind with wind chimes). Ever since I've been doing this regularly, it's become very easy now and I don't even think about it anymore. I make things easy for myself, I have food ready to eat, so I don't have to cook in the evening (here in Germany, this isn't common anyway -- people normally eat dinner at noon). But eating anything in the evening is good b/c it gives your body power to sleep. Because we eat only so we can go back to sleep. Thus, eating something in the evening helps me to get to bed earlier. But I don't force myself to get to bed early, I only force myself to get up early (except on weekends, so my body can have more freedom on weekends).
One of the points that this video does a good job of emphasizing is that motivation is fleeting. I love the book Atomic Habits, but I think its most influential lesson is simple:
The five minute rule. Just five minutes of doing anything will bring the motivation. If I put on my gym clothes, grab my gym bag and start the car, how am I **not** going to the gym. If I take my laptop and hit the coffee shop, how am I not going to write? Motivation comes after the action. Waiting for motivation or waiting to “feel like it” will never happen, or it’s too rare to rely on.
Using this psychology in tandem with systems and habits that work for you is the only way to go.
This is one of the best parts about having a dog. I care so much about their quality of life that I'll step out of my comfort zone to get outside and take care of their needs which benefits me so much in turn.

Yes! I recently realised the exact same thing. I spend two weeks studying something every day before I start to put in effort to be proficient. For me that's rising to the level of the goal.

I’ve always been a morning person so waking up early has never been the problem. However, I used to lounge around for an hour before getting out of bed. Something unexpected that changed that was getting an automatic feeder for my pet and setting it to 6am. She will pester me until I get up to open the door and then I’m like “well, now I’m up” and start my day right then. This external factor had a significant improvement of behavior that I never thought could be solved from a pet feeder. You might give it a try!

24:44 this part is so true. i've been wanting to get a gym membership for a while now. i have such good excuses such as: social anxiety, i've never been to a gym before in my life, i'm a student and it costs a lot, i live with my mom and brother and i have chores in the house to do, including walking my dog, i want to have a job during summer to save up money, i want to visit my grandma in a different city often, i have to wake up in the morning instead of sleeping in because the morning schedule of the gym is cheaper + there will be less people in the gym at that time etc. but NONE of these are good or valid enough. i'm going to apply TODAY for a 4x a month membership and stick to it. i decided! good luck to everyone reading this and watching this video!! we got this

Got an amazing take away from this that is getting me out of bed rot, I realize I overthink habits or things I want to do and that just builds up how much I really don’t wanna do it. Instead, I’m trying to act on impulse; get up, speak up, do the things before your brain catches up and makes excuses.

Great video. The theme of positive vs negative connotation (Pavlov training, neurons that fire together wire together, etc.) brings to mind how neurodivergent brains have this experience also yet sometimes in different ways. For example; if you have ADHD and grow up in a household where routines & practices aren’t implemented to support your needs as an ADHD person, it can be that much harder to have a positive association with things like routine and time management. Let alone figuring out which organization tools work for you and what doesn’t, etc… I find this video very useful motivation, and it’s also good to hear that everyone struggles with this, and not just neurodivergents!
Growing up in a household that holds a lot in past and not that open about growth in general makes me feel stuck. I want to make my home the first place feeling that growth but I don’t feel it. I instead feel that push outside(in school) it helped me have that new way of opportunities, but again the home I have is not making a way of it.

I wanted to share that a couple years ago, I had to take a job that started at 5:00am. My alarm went off at 3:30. I didn’t even have the willpower to prepare myself in advance of the starting day. But what was interesting is this: the first day I was tired and loopy, but fine. The second day was a little better since I crashed at night and made up sleep. By the third day, it was as if I’d always woken up at 3:30am. I was full of energy.

I just stumbled across this video. I am a closeted trans person, and I just found out relatively recently that one of my parents has a very rare form of cancer. This video has made me realize the complicated feelings I have right now. The reality is, being a trans person is not ideal, and at the same time my life always feels like a ticking clock in the sense that I always feel like I'm running out of time and that I've wasted my life by not being myself. I'm afraid of the treatment I could face if I transition, and I'm afraid of being in my deathbed pre-transition wishing I chose myself over internalized hate. And it's hard to validate your dysphoria when the world hates and kills trans people. And now there's a genuine time clock of the confusion of the illness. Thank you for this video, as hard as it is I think my next steps have to be coming out. Are any trans people watching this? Any advice? For context I am a 20 year old college student.
hi! another closeted 20 yr old trans person here. what's even spookier is i also have a parent who's been diagnosed with kidney cancer for over a year now. (only indicated difference is i'm not a student.) upon reading your comment, i felt a sense of pensive kinship over what you must be going through. i personally have no plans of coming out, not while i still live in my parent's house. because of this, i've found it impossible to feel like my authentic self. since we're sort of in the same boat, i don't know if i'm qualified to give you any advice. i will just say that i hear you loud and clear; it really is an impossible task. to balance the turmoil of who you are not being what others see you as, caring for a parent with a horrifying illness, worrying over the potential falling apart of your relationships if you were to be honest with them, knowing that the life you're going to live is entirely in your own hands... but, yeah. i'd say the first step is to be brutally honest with yourself, accept whatever your reality is. what follows depends on the reality you are going to walk towards.
(sorry if that was just a convoluted mess of ramblings. maybe something in there will resonate with you, though. truly hope your situation improves, that both of our parents will be okay, and that whoever you may come out to is understanding and loving. best of luck to you
Fellow trans person here. Just started HRT a week ago and I live with my parents who love leaving FOX News on all day to give you an idea of their ideology. Coming out to them was easily one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, bar none. They took it pretty well, better than I would've expected. They call me by the right pronouns for the most part and have never demeaned me about my transness. My dad was the one who picked up my HRT prescription at the pharmacy last week. Sometimes people surprise you. I was expecting the worst. Sometimes we overthink the worst, but we don't think about the other outcome: what if they love us? Sometimes that idea is scarier to contend with. But even if they don't, I think you deserve to live your life in love and not fear. Life will align itself accordingly, and sometimes there are things you might "lose" along the way, but the people and places and experiences on the other side are greater than any gain you could imagine, because you're aligning yourself with truth, with your heart.
You have a beautiful idea of who you are, who you want to become. Transness is spiritual to me, like a calling, an awakening of sorts. That kind of deep seated sense of love and peace, the realest thing there is. There's a lot of stuff in the world to cloud that judgement: opinions, politics, society, doesn't really matter what you call it, it's all just fear. There's a million pretty heavy excuses you could make alone, and I don't blame you in this day and age. But you really only get two choices in life: make choices in love, or be ruled by fear?
Wow. Literally everything you’ve said, are things I’ve been experiencing within myself when it comes to consistency and changes. Literally everything you’ve said I’ve had to learn for myself thru experience. And tbh I’m rn at the point where I trust myself that I will get to where I want to be no matter what because I try my best to continue to do the little actions even when I miss a day or two I keep going back to it and I trust that I will get there. Ngl this video made me realize that as I make excuses for big tasks, I also follow these excuses with more for smaller things. For example, to clean my room I love to listen to music but even now I find myself making excuses on how it’s ‘too much work’ to put on music because deep down I know this small task is followed by a bigger one. I definitely think that a lot of my problems can be solved by simply acknowledging these problems. Your video was super helpful, and I hope it pops up next time I’m laying in bed overthinking a big task and scrolling on TH-cam instead :) ❤️
TH-cam keeps recommending me these videos, so now I’m going to start working on myself, I’ve been trying to lose weight and lower my stress levels because I’m at risk of a lot of conditions that run in my family, but I needed motivation to do this.

I just listen to music whenever I MUST do something I reeealy don't want to do, like washing the dishes, moving to a new home, building a space ship, terraforming Mars, and the list goes on.
Listening to music while doing chores (ex. building your hadron collider) is most likely going to help you keep going.
I've been challenging myself to oaint everyday and I have been, aside from one, for the whole year. And what you said about creating positive connotations with our habits leading them to feel like rewards in and of themselves, it's been so true. Committing to one consistent habit makes it easier to implement new ones ✌🏼🎨

I wanted to add on a little comment, mostly just for myself, on the topic of how we tell ourselves that making these small habits won't lead achieving our big goals: Even if (I'm using my own personal situation here) creating the habit of waking up earlier, doesn't directly effect me making a career for myself in music (the end goal rn). It does prove to myself, that I can ALSO stick with sitting down every day that I can and practicing, or teaching myself something about music production. Which is something that I really struggle with motivating myself to do because it's the one thing that I am not super familiar with in the process, and it is daunting to push through it, especially on days when I don't exactly feel like it.
Additionally, improving yourself in any way, is always a net positive, because it will make you feel better about yourself. As well as increase the number of days or the amount of time that you do actually feel good, energized, and motivated to do the things that will get you to your end goal.

I really appreciate this video, and it really helps me when i ask myself how i'm supposed to start something or start a new habit. I haven't ever considered thinking about why i'm scared or why i'm uncomfortable to start something new. Also, the part where you explain using gratitude made it make a lot more sense to me. My dad has told me to start practicing gratitude before, and then he never really goes into more explanation about it, and i'm just like "well duh? Of course, you should be grateful for things. What?". And just in general this video has made me understand how to start a habit a lot more. (Also can i just say that you remind me of Megara from Hercules so much and not just in your looks but in the way you talk about things and your voice and body language too.)

One thing that helps me form habits is telling myself just do this one tiny step. Like getting out of bed when the alarm goes off “at least get up and go to the bathroom. Then you can decide what to do next.”
And then that part of the routine just becomes a routine. And you just keep building it little step by little step. And you won’t have to think about all the steps along the way. You just do the first step and then your body will automatically just do the next steps because you set it up that way.
