Which Romanov daughter is this? The first Romanov gravesite was excavated in 1991. To confirm the identity of the Romanov Family, who disappeared while under Bolshevik house arrest in 1918, DNA was taken and forensic reconstructions of the bodies were made. It turned out that one daughter was missing - but they weren't sure who. This is the reconstruction of what investigators called Skeleton #6. They confirmed it was either Anastasia OR Maria Romanov.
However, in 2007, investigators announced that they had discovered two additional skeletons, separated from the original gravesite. This site contained the body of the son Alexei, and another unidentified Romanov daughter. So now, all the bodies are accounted for. Yet the debate still rages about who Skeleton #6 belongs to.
The Russians firmly believe that Skeleton Number 6 belongs to Anastasia, but the controversy is still raging. Here are my re-creations of this forensic model, with comparisons to Anastasia and Maria, including the different hairstyles they often wore. While I’m not a forensic scientist, this one to me is the spitting image of Anastasia, but I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Anastasia's height was 5'2 (157 cm), Maria was much taller. Judging by the height, these remains belong to Anastasia

@@beautyjenn1221 Personally I think she was a bit too short to be 5'7". Only a bit taller than Olga, and Tatiana was also only about 5'7" or 5'8". (The claims that Tatiana was 5'9" are ridiculous. Based on photos it doesn't seem she was even as tall as her father. Of course we have Buxhoeveden. But photos are more reliable than memoirs.)

@@YFL.111Yes, they found the missing bodies, that of Grand Duchess Anastasia (or Grand Duchess Maria, depending on who you ask) with the remains of Tsarevich Alexei in 2007. About 100 meters from the other grave. Their identities are definitively confirmed in 2020

Based on the length of the chin and the shallower cheekbones, I’d agree that it’s Anastasia.
Maria was known to have higher set cheekbones and a wider/softer face. This is definitely Anastasia sadly.

Facial reconstruction is not that accurate. The skull of this skeleton also suffered severe trauma to the facial area. The skull of the skeleton was far to damaged to get an accurate reconstruction. The wounds of the body suggest it is Maria. The assassination account of what happened to Maria matches the damage done on this skeleton (shot in the thigh and beaton in the face and head with the end of a rifle butt).
@@jamiemohan2049 Interesting! But frankly I don't think that the assassination accounts are all that accurate. Yurovsky said that there were 12 people and the guards weren't that good at telling the daughters apart.

It always makes me emotional whenever I see pictures of OTMA and Alexei. They were very beautiful people. And despite whatever faults their father and mother had, the family and those loyal to them in the end did not deserve such cruelty. It's really tragic. May The Romanovs forever Rest In Peace...

I agree. I don't see why that skeleton was identified as being Maria for the longest time. Maria is hauntingly beautiful, sad to think her sisters called her "dumpling" all the time. I will never understand how someone could kill children so brutally😢
At first I was confused as to which skeleton this was referring too.
The skeleton found in the first grave was Anastasia.
The skeletons found in the second grave are Alexei and Maria.
Looks more like Anastasia, Maria and Anastasia do look similar though so I imagine it would be difficult to identify them

This is the same comment I put on the full video, I'm only copy pasting it because I am curious what people think.
I agree the reconstruction looks more like Anastasia, but I still think it was Maria. According to the book The Family Romanov by Candace Fleming, all of the skeletons were too tall to be Anastasia and furthermore, "all the other female bones showed signs of 'completed growth'. But Anastasia was just seventeen at the time of the murders. Her bones would have still been growing." As for the first point, yes, Anastasia could have grown some in captivity, but by age fifteen, females tend to be at or close to their adult height, and it is accepted that Anastasia was the shortest sister. I think it's likely the remains were indeed too tall to have been hers. On a different note, skeleton 6 was proven to be a carrier of hemophilia. Now, hemophilia carriers were not always symptomatic, but I believe Maria was. Symptomatic carriers of hemophilia might, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, "bruise easily, bleed more with surgeries and dental work, have frequent nosebleeds, [and] have heavy menstrual bleeding". Maria's menstrual periods were known to be severe and to bother her significantly, and she hemorrhaged in 1914 during a surgery to remove her tonsils. Granted, her aunt, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, believed all of the sisters were symptomatic carriers, but I've seen no evidence of any other sister having experiences like this. As for the reconstruction, it does more closely resemble Anastasia, but as the video says, all four sisters looked very similar, and it does closely resemble Maria as well. And as the reconstruction of Tatiana showed, forensic reconstructions are not perfect, and a reconstruction can look noticeably different from how the individual looked in life. I find it completely believable that small discrepancies led to Maria's reconstruction looking much more like her younger sister. Overall, I've just seen so much evidence that skeleton 6 was Maria as opposed to Anastasia, but if anyone else has other arguments, I'd be very interested to hear them.
Just one addition because really, I'm curious: if you think it's Anastasia, why? Please tell me the arguments you have for it being Anastasia. I'm not asking to try to get into a fight or anything, I just really do not understand why so many people say it was Anastasia and want to know.
I think these are all super interesting points! As I mentioned in the video too, the forensic reconstructions don’t always touch soft tissue features. I definitely think there’s a possibility of this one being Maria! I read Maria and Anastasia were both of the accurate height - not sure if what I read was outdated or if there was more recent scholarships. Thank you for your perspective!
There's no guarantee Anastasia didn't carry hemophilia. Maria's cheekbones are too wide. The bones would not shrink back down. The forehead for Maria was a different shape. Once the skull plates suture and finish growing generally they won't change shape either. The eyes were a different shape. I'm not convinced one way or another, just pointing it out.
The center of her face, eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, etc, look like Maria. I know that's not scientific but the facial structure doesn't resemble Anastasia to me.

there are only three vertebrae left of skeleton 6, which could indicate that the individual's bones are the youngest of three, being more fragile than others. as for her height, all of the three skeletons' limbs have been found broken and therefore the height is most unfortunately an approximation.

The ROMNOV daughters were all so BEAUTIFUL!! As was their little brother ALEXIS and parents. They had such a TRAGIC end of their lives as did their other relatives who were thrown into a pit with bomms throw in after them.

It's very interesting indeed. But no wonder, looking at Nicky and Alix, they were both good-looking too. Not to forget, they did really love each other, a lot. Contrary to many European Royal Houses at the time ... Nicky and Alix shared their bed. This explains why their children were beautiful as well. All 5 of them, including Alexei.

my intuition knows this isn't maria. look at the brow bone. Maria's brow bone is more straight and at a different angle. not the brow, the brow BONE.
It's absolutely Anastasia. Maria was discovered to be in the mine with Alexei in 2009. Anastasia had always been with the rest of the family and loyal four.
The remains in the pit were too fragmented to be identified.
They were just children so young they didn’t deserve that. RIP 🕊️

I think it was Maria. Her features seem to line up more. It so sad that we don’t know for sure. It breaks my heart to think of what happened to them in their towards the end of their lives

If you look at the ' floating head' shot that the children set up with a black fabric between two chairs, when they had all their heads shaved ( to help recovery from illness ) you get a really good idea of skull shape. They are very distinctive.

You’re missing the point that the Russian’s base their opinion on skull reconstructions in which the middle of the entire faces were missing. They glued them on and, obviously, that is problematic for multiple reasons. There was no face and only parts of the jaw and the top of the skull is actually usable for 5 and 6. The models created are therefore inaccurate and they are obviously using the photos of the girls with shaved heads as models for those recreations. The Russian scientists will never agree with the other scientists. Anastasia’s height and age matches with the 2007 grave - no question.
I agree that these reconstructions aren't accurate, but they also don't look like the sisters with shaved heads (frankly they don't look much like them at all). And the remains in the 2007 grave were too fragmented to construct a height.

Looking at this from the perspective of life drawing & depicting bone structure, the Anastasia version is a better portrait. The space between the eyebrows and the eye sockets, the elongation of the face makes the Maria version look off.
thank you for your observation on the brows. You are correct. The first thing i noticed was the brow bone. The spacing/angle is mostly in line w/ anastasia.

According to the results of DNA testing done on tissue samples, that were preserved after surgery, from the woman known as Anna Anderson, her name was Franziska Schanzkowska. The sample didn't match the Romanovs, but it did match a grandson of her sister.
My money's on Anastasia. The facial structure fits better than Maria.

Anastasia has already been buried with her parents and two older sisters, Olga and Tatiana in 1998. However, Alexei and Maria had not been laid to rest due to the Russian Orthodox Church who were adamant on more dna testing despite Maria and Alexei already being identified. As of now both kids are just sitting in a box not with their family :(

Honestly, it’s most likely Anastasia, as the skeleton in somewhat facially elongated, but the picture of Maria has her head tilted. Either way, unless someone surfaces that is an unknown descendent and DNA shows positive…they all probably died. The fact that there was a question of one missing, is rather creepy, as her ending might have been worse than the others (if any of the daughters survived for a little longer that day).
