Introducing the BORKle mechanic! BORKle: you may cast this card for the BORKle cost by sacrificing a card with a prime card number in addition to its cost. Then, remove any text in brackets but choose an effect from parenthesis, then roll a dice and if you roll even, add an ampersand somewhere in the text. If odd, add a period to make a complete sentence on the card. Then, on any vowel, add a tilde to it and pronounce it with gusto or else counter this card!
Cleave is just Kicker with fancy brackets. For example: Wash Up {U} Kicker {1}{U} Counter target spell that wasn’t cast from it’s owner’s hand. If this spell was kicked, counter target spell instead. This only changes if the mana cost is not in the cleave cost, which I haven’t seen an example
Cleave (1): Split or sever (something), especially along a natural line or grain. Cleave (2): Stick fast to. Magic has a habit of making mechanics meet the definition of the word they are named after, but it's not immediately obvious to me the connection between "Cleave (1)" and "Remove certain text" (there's no way Cleave (2) is what they had in mind) I guess Cleave (1) does remove material, but it splits the material, not eliminate it. maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think it should be called "Cleave." Could someone help me out here? The mechanic itself looks pretty neat, though, I'll give it that.
Like what you said I predict a card would have cleave where a you can destroy enchantments and artifacts in sorta choose one or both, where the both is in square brackets. Like [or both]
this reminds me of a Custom Hearthstone card on the subreddit. it was called Munch Root or something that essentially did this, you got to choose what words didnt show up and could do some cool stuff.
Its definitely something that's going in my tamn luminous enigma human deck honestly wouldn't be surprised if they made a whole commander deck built around the cleave ability. That would be pretty need to build around
I know they were trying to implement wordplay into design for a while, but kept stumbling over localization issues. The fact that you can just put the brackets anywhere in other languages is probably really useful for R&D.
This is my favorite mechanic in this set! I love the whole idea of redacting and omitting cards. Some of my favorite themes and ways to play cards are things like Spectral shift that change the type of cards played and then taking advantage of that. Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control [and on target creature you don't control.] Deal 2 damage to target creature [or player.]" Or something like that.
the only thing I don't like about this is that if your for example playing a mono green deck I can't use dig up to get a basic land (it's black on the color identity thanks to the cleave cost)
This is a really bad tutor, I think it'll be budget. They were definitely hesitant with this card and wanted to make sure it wasnt under costed. I'm glad this will be a good budget card but outside of that it's way too slow
I also thought of the mythos cards. Options are good, but no more flip or transform cards please. When I put a card in a sleeve, I want it to stay there.
I wish that Wizards would put out more cards of mechanics introduced in the past each set instead of constantly making 2-4 new mechanics each set then never touch those mechanics again on later sets! So many mechanics ie Companion, mutate, splice, morph, and others never see another set after their debut set so to speak! They just make so many new mechanics each set then they collect dust never making new cards with the same mechanic again! I expected this to be a mechanic where your creature deals full power combat dmg to each creature blocking it from the name. So if a card is a 3/5 with cleave it would deal 3 dmg to all creatures blocking it.
