indian currency is kept artificially low because that way indian offshoring seems very attractive on paper - as a consequence half of white collar western jobs are now preformed from india. production of goods and services in very low cost economy for high cost of living economies should be illegal, becuase it is hurting 95% of people in the high cost economies, while enriching people in low cost economies and a few who take the cut.

Rupee was devalued by 500% by 2000, compared to 1970. By 2013, another 30%. Since then, by 20%. See the graph at 1:07. Although it helps exports, momentum of devaluation has slowed considerably. Not as much as current government would like, but this will turn around in 4-5 years.

USD's interest has been strong , so lots of demand for USD by global south to pay higher interest repayment. So rupees down as consequent. If rupees weakened, then india's inflations goes up. Less demand for India's export due to lesser ability to pay for India's export. A weaken demand for import but less elastic, so a higher trade deficit.

@@thecomment9489 Since 1970 India's energy (oil) consumption has increased exponentially and major portion (85%+) of it is imported. This has played a big role in rupee devaluation. Now that India has found huge oil reserves in Andaman and KG basin and gov is pushing for green energy, i believe situation will improve in future. Making Rupee fully convertible can also boost it's value.

Oil imports might be the primary factor. But this happens to be a topic which I find confusing as well. I remember that 1 CAD equated to approximately 47.5 INR during mid 2016. The same approximation rounds out to 62-63 INR today. And you don't need to be an expert to know that the Canadian economy has not done particularly well over the course of the last few years.

As long as oil is pegged to the dollar, and India needs oil to survive, a weakening rupee is only going to make inflationary pressure hard on Indians. India needs to strength the rupee. Our export strategy cannot be based on selling our goods for below market rates. It's not a long-term strategy.

You don't know how it works right? main Reasons the rupee getting weaker against dollar-
      1. Demand of oil in INDIA which needs importation. (Around $180 billion)
      2. US increased interest rates on issuing dollars multiple times frequently.
      3. Low manufacturing. But current government is working on it.
RUPEE will start getting stronger from the day we stopped importing oil.

For your information.. It’s the USD which has been kept strong intentionally by Fed so they can buy cheap raw materials from other countries and sell them expensive goods manufactured by US companies.
US prints tonnes of tonnes dollars every month, yet, USD is strong!! How?? Can this phenomenon happen with an emerging country?? Why does USD never deprecate even when US economy’s GDP to Debt ratio is very high, when US govt borrow trillions of dollars to give freebies to its citizens?? The currency value does not matter. If that would matter so much then South Korea and Japan would be classified as a poor country. It affects badly only when the value plunges sharply like 30% in a year or so. It is also bad If the value increases sharply or even by 10% a year.
