I'd watched the first two seasons, rented the movie, and then was neck deep into season 3 of this show as a 90s kid around 1993, seeing it in reruns on SciFi's Cartoon Quest. Since there was no Net in those days, Prime's return surprised the hell out of me. Cullen saying, "Light our darkest hour," combined with the song had ten year old me cheering as well as tearing up a bit.

And that brought the close to what had been a very messy season for “Transformers”. In fact the ending felt more like a cliffhanger that made no sense.
I disagree. While I'm not on board with the reasons they did it (to drive new toy sales), Prime's death was a polarizing moment for a lot of us kids in the 80's. It showed us that heroes do in fact die, and honestly, he should have just stayed dead, as it would have lent a lot of weight to his sacrifice, and would have still weighed heavily on Hot Rod's conscience. His death in the movie was one of the most iconic moments of 80's entertainment. I hated it when it happened as a kid, but I absolutely applaud it as an adult.

Pete Stacker sounded so *done* with this entire thing, delivering that one line... reasons to let a character stay dead: diminishing everything that came after, diminishing all that led to the character's demise, diminishing the weight of death itself, actor fatigue.
