      I don’t think think that’s all of that, considering the prelude of events that lead to this point Hot Rid was constantly put into positions that required for him to lead however his own fears and doubts were preventing him from seeing that his choices were made with good results, I honestly believe when Optimus said that he was basically telling Hot Rod to rise above his fears and to , in a way be reborn, lead as a new man

      Its very subjective I think and it was up to us how we interpret it, when I was a kid I took it as acknowledgement of leadership and had nothing to do with the circumstances of his death.

      I get it they tried with Rodimus...I really did...but ultimately I felt more emotions when they brought back Optimus then any part of Rodimus term as leadership, maybe its the lackluster writing season 3 WAS a drop in quality compared to season 1 and 2...but Return of Optimus Prime still holds up as one of my favourite G1 episodes...alongside Wardawn, Key to Vector Sigma and Countdown to Extinction...

    For those who don’t know, the Matrix of Power has been retconned to be connected to the Transformers’ god, Primus. That is why Unicron wants to destroy it so badly.

    • @wyvern876
      @wyvern876 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Close, but Primus is the planet cybertron itself, while the matrix is the physical connection to the transformer "afterlife" where their sparks go after death. That realm is also intricately connected to Primus, so unleashing the matrix's power is equivalent to unleashing God, angels, and the souls of everyone who died right in the devil's face.

    The problem with Rodimus is the writers never gave him a chance to forge his own legacy as the Autobot leader. He spent most of the next season constantly worrying that he couldn't live up to Optimus Prime's legacy.
    Look at 3:52. And tell me he didn't have to potential to be a total badass in the next season. But they blew it because they were already planning for Optimus' return.

    Hot Rod represented the Guy that would fight by Optimus but chose to relax instead, and when his mentor died, he had to quickly mature and take the leadership role during a dark time for the Autobots. His evolution from Young and Brash Autobot to Leader is the best part of the movie.

That moment when Hot Rod claims the Matrix and pawns Galvatron was pure epic, and then his pure badass run from the explosion and quoting Optimus Prime's famous "Autobots, Transform and Roll Out" quote was just so damn BADASS.
    Even though I'm not big on Rodimus Prime, he was just so damn awesome during this part of the movie. I love how he said "This is the end of the road, Galvatron!" before laying down a beating was just so damn epic it was WORTHY of a Prime.

      If only the writers of season 3 had kept to more of this side of Rodimus Prime, and not so much of the insecure whiny side that was always so worried about living up to Optimus. There can only be one Optimus so they should have shown more of Rodimus being his own style of leader. But i suppose they had to set things up for Optimus's return that kids and their parents fought so hard for.

    Prime was always the archetypal hero- wise and courageous to his troops; merciful and optimistic toward his enemies. His death, while soul destroying to my entire generation, showed that even the mightiest of heroes can fall (then come back, repeatedly) but his legacy and ideals live on. All heroes die someday, but they are judged by what they leave behind.

  • @ProtoRetro
    @ProtoRetro 10 ปีที่แล้ว +82

    In the original script for the 1986 Movie, Hot Rod didn't get involved in Optimus/Megatron's fight and Megatron still finished off Optimus Prime the same way. When Marvel did the Movie Adaptation books in 1986, the Marvel What If books were still hot so they saw this as a good chance to show "WHAT IF" Hot Rod didn't interfere. Same result. Ron Friendman, the original script writer changed it because he felt it would make it better connected to "destiny" if somehow Hot Rod had a part in it. It is the will of Primus.

Optimus was chosen by the Matrix to be the Supreme Commander while Rodimus was chosen to be the Guardian/Protector.

    Really wish we could of seen more of this Hot Rod during G1. He went from a bit of a slacker and hot head at the start to a controlled and confident leader by the end. Then G1 came about and it seems like all we could get was the unconfident, unsure, guy who kept 2nd guessing himself. It might of been fine to have that for part of, or maybe even the full first season, as he was having to step into the shoes of Optimus freaking Prime but it just went on for to long and we never really got back to the Rodimus Prime we see here.

    Hot Rod's tech spec says his function was a Cavalier 😂, meaning doing nothing just playing with Daniel. But he was rash and brave, and he stepped up to lead when all hope was lost. He started leading when he and kup were captured in Quintessa by the quintessons. After that, he was the one who led the way, finding a ship, going to Junk, befriended the Junkions, declaring war on UNICRON (only galvatron and hot rod dared to do that), charging into Unicron's eye, fighting galvatron for the matrix and then destroying UNICRON. He deserved to be the new leader.

    At the time, killing Prime pretty much killed the series. But in hindsight I'd disagree that it was the worst idea ever. It gave us a moment, an event in Transformers that would shape the franchise and remain with us forever. As polarising as the original idea behind his death was, it remains a major part of Transformers, something we obviously still discuss today.
