@@getoffdIndeed. Have you had weird dreams? I've had them.
Locust dream before the amoebas broke out in Israel. Roughly a whole week before these reports happened
Had dreams with no precognitive knowledge about them. Two so far this year. One was some crazy nebula out in some eastern dessert region. Turns out it was the 1054 Crab Nebula, Chinese astrologers reported it and noted the sky was changed for a year ( 1054 is the same year as the Great Schism and the Crab Nebula was a twin Nebula erupting ).
The third was chaotic. Was some military Corp. Remember getting body slammed and some Latino man called me a female dog and said welcome to the School Americas. Woke up with tailbone pain and bruising on my left side ( like I took a kidney blow or two ). Looked it up and like the Nebula dream I had no knowledge of it. It's real. It's real as us and it was insane. Contra, GLADIO, and CIA came up learning about this encampment. They were terrible.

Personally, I take his laughter at the end as a response to him realizing that despite his inevitable doom he achieved his goal in the secondary universe which was to not die alone (which he did by forming loving bonds with his family and Gretchen). This is easily my favorite movie. Even the soundtrack is spot on.

There's a thing on the DVD that explains something I never picked up on, though it seems obvious. Everyone but Donnie knows what's going on and they are trying to help him to figure it out. They only know subconsciously, so their clues are garbled and imprecise, while consciously they just have a growing feeling of dread. One specific example of this is the "Cellar Door" moment; Drew Barrymore is LITERALLY telling him "You have to open the cellar door", even though she herself doesn't know why she's doing it. They all have a deep emotional reaction at the end because they've travelled back with Donnie and somewhere inside themselves, they know that he sacrificed himself to save them.

The tangent timeline occurs naturally and is very unstable. It is not the result of anything other than the fourth dimension being corrupted. This happens rarely according to the "Philosophy of Time Travel," Roberta Sparrow's book Donnie Darko receives from his science teacher. When a tangent universe (TU) is created an *Artifact*- in this case, the jet engine - will also spontaneously appear. The Artifact is the evidence that a TU has been created. With the exception of this artifact, everything within the TU is an *exact copy* of the Primary Universe (PU) with one of everything copied into it. The Glitch is the presence of an extra jet engine in the TU, which prevents the universe from being able to naturally collapse without destroying the PU.
Donnie is chosen by the universe (or God) to be the "Living Receiver." It is often the person closest to artifact upon its inception in the epicenter of the TU that receives this title. As a Receiver, Donnie is endowed with special abilities. Some of these include increased strength, mind control, the ability to conjure fire and water, and telekinesis. These abilities are essential in constructing the portal and removing the artifact so that the TU can safely collapse.
The universe will use anybody that has died in the TU to help the Receiver complete his mission. These people are called "Manipulated Dead." Both Frank The Bunny and Gretchen are Manipulated Dead. Frank's first job is to wake up Donnie so that he is not killed by the jet engine and can complete his mission. Gretchen is essential in setting up the "Ensurance Trap". Everything is being set up to essentially trap Donnie into only having one option - expel the artifact. He is given someone to love then she dies. He's so upset at Frank for killing Gretchen he shoots him dead. This creates Manipulated Dead Frank - the person guiding him to do these things. He must create Manipulated Dead Frank in order for himself to be saved in the beginning.
Everyone else connected to Donnie are the "Manipulated Living". Its their jobs to subconsciously implant ideas and guide Donnie toward his destiny. Nearly every event in the film has a specific purpose designed to aid Donnie to save the Universe. The book given to him by his science teacher and the quote, "Cellar Door" are just a couple examples.
The manipulated have saved Donnie from death and have guided him into a desperate situation. His girlfriend is dead and he's a killer on the run. He knows what his purpose is now and only has one way out even though it will ultimately end his own life. Sending the engine through a portal will erase the last 28 days from history and time will return to October 2nd. At the end of the film we see a vortex appear over Donnie's house. It's the beginning of the TU collapse and is centered over where it began. Donnie, aware of what he must do, drives up the mountain for a better vantage point. The plane with the same jet engine has been manipulated to fly overhead at this exact time. Donnie rips the engine off using telekinesis, constructs a time portal from water and guides the engine through it. There is now no longer a duplicate jet engine in the TU. The glitch as been removed and the universe can safely collapse. We now see parts of the last 28 days rewinding as the TU starts to unravel.
Back in the PU, the last 28 days never happened. Donnie wakes up in his bed laughing after dreaming some of the events within the TU. He then goes back to sleep, seemingly content with life now. The experience has brought him closer to God and he is no longer afraid to die. The jet engine Donnie sent through the time portal now falls into his bedroom killing him.
Living Receivers do not have to die. Roberta Sparrow was most likely a Living Receiver herself.
Side note, the Acronym for the Philosophy of Time Travel is POTT. Get it? The Director/Writer likes getting high.

I personally always thought Donnie died when the jet engine came through the roof the first time.
Frank was a sorta spirit guide, and let Donnie do everything he always wanted to do (set fire to a house, sink the axe into the statue, flood the school, get the girl) in the space of time before his spirit went to wherever.
The engine came through a wormhole, but not one created by Donnie or the tangent universe, neither he nor Frank knows where the wormhole came from. Could be a government experiment. Whatevs.
Frank shows Donnie the wormhole as a sorta final "Wormholes exist" kinda thing, before Donnie's spirit leaves.
Donnie's spirit leaving is depicted by him dying the second time.
    None of the film happened.
It was all a fraction of time, which is relative.
    That's what I think anyways.

i dont know if youve ever lost anyone before but theres this moment when they die where you can feel it. almost like time stops and you know whats about to happen. i think thats what i got mostly from this movie all the people that woke up in the night with that feeling, even if some of them didnt know why. i like to think thats how it felt for donnie in the alternate timeline, which is why he believed so much in the time travel. maybe the alternate timeline didnt happen at all but that when you die the same feeling occurs only more intense, and he conjours up this whole timeline seconds before he dies to explain away that feeling and be at peace(hence the laughing).

I think the movie is much more about the issues of conformity, preservation of social standards (and double standards), peer pressure/oppression.
In the movie, most of the adults are shallow, miserable, broken, occasionally morbid - yet they try to mold young people into what they think are good upstanding citizens in order to ensure their future happiness. The irony is that the only result of this can be yet another generation of miserable, dysfunctional adults that are as trapped in their thinking as the previous generation.
The whole time displacement plot arc seemed secondary.

In the short story the protagonist escapes death only to find in the end that he was dead the entire time. This is why I believe that what we see in the film is actually all a hallucination by Donnie Darko during the last few seconds before he dies. Like a state of limbo where his mind is trying to reconcile what has just happened before everything fades to black.

  • @fivetoe

Donnie doesn't have to die because he already fixed the time line causing the engine never to go into the tangent universe leaving both universes equal meaning Donnie could have lived, but he chose not to because he still had memory's of what happened in the tangent universe which made him happy that he saved everyone. (That's why he was laughing) He chose to die because he was at peace with god and his choices.

To me this movie is more about the schizophrenia and the fact it was a dream. It says that the tangent universe ( the dream ) will collapse in on itself because it's unstable. To me the turbine came from donnie's dream world aka the tangent universe and frank saved donnie and therefore escaped death through his dream to survive death. So his dream becomes the tangent universe and everyone from the real world joins in his dream, but the dream won't last forever because it will collapse in on itself and create a worm hole back to the primary reality. This means that the turbine isn't the artefact, in the movie it says that the artefact is something the person who created the tangent universe aka the new reality aka the dream would be interested in and the only thing that is iron and that donnie is interested in is franks bunny rabbit mask. Now the only way to stop this dream from ending is for the person who created the universe ( the dream ) to die and therefore die in the real world. Now the reason why donnie was schizophrenic was because like in the book it says someone is given powers to read minds and conjure up fire, this is something most schizophrenics think they can do so, ultimately donnie has schizophrenia and created his own reality therefore creating a tangent universe or tangent reality and the only way to stop this reality is for donnie to die. And when he does die everyone is saved, but it doesn't mean that donnie's world never existed because when frank wakes up he puts his hand to his eye where he was shot and the councillor wakes up in shock because the dream seemed so real and donnie's girlfriend waves to his mother and you can tell that they know each other from somewhere - the dream
So in my opinion this movie explains why some dreams are so real and explains why we think we know someone when in reality we don't, but in another reality we did

that's a very interesting perspective, especially since there's a famous theory that says you are all the characters in your dreams. given that, perhaps everyone in Donnie's dream (manipulative living/dead) was a part of his unconscious (dreams are the unconscious), which was aware of his madness, trying to help him complete his journey by playing out the dream so he could be at peace with his death.

A very important thing i think you missed is that at the end of the movie, the book he read (philosophy of timtravel or whatever) says that some of the people involved in the actions of the tangent universe may have memories of their experiences in the tangent universe when they wake up in the "normal" universe. I think this is key because it might explain the scene at the end of the movie, you know the one where everyone is all sad and shit and "mad world" plays in the background.

  • @toneten4160
    @toneten4160 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Basically Donnie was reliving the tangent universe over and over resetting the timeline again and again cuz he was so afraid to die, thats why he was so bored and angry all the time he already lived an experienced everything that was happening it drove him to madness, my guess is that he'd been searching for a way to make things right without dying, doing things different every time he reset the universe and such. Frank was showing him the only way to save the world was to face his fear and die.

I don't believe Donnie had to die, the philosophy of time travel only said that the metal artifact in the tangent universe must be removed from the tangent universe before the tangent universe collapses. As long as the jet engine is sent through the portal the duplicate is removed and the tangent universe can collapse safely. Manipulated dead Frank could only travel within the tangent universe, he only exists as manipulated dead in the tangent universe, so he couldn't have told Donnie to get out of bed in the primary. This means the tangent broke off before the jet engine crashed (presumably just before, while the engine was in air), which is why him escaping it in the primary was inevitable. Now the only question at that point is why did he choose to send it back to his bedroom. You're saying he had to kill himself, I don't think so, the book didn't mention that. The tangent universe would have ended regardless and with the artifact removed would have safely collapsed, ending everybody including Donnie, I feel his laugh at the end was him just making peace with that - as he was no longer afraid to die alone.
That all being said, I don't think Donnie himself traveled through time at the end. I think the film by playing everything that happened in the tangent universe backwards was just reflecting that everything done in the tangent universe was undone and we go back to the primary where Donnie is still in bed.

I think it's because when the jet engine falls from the sky the tangent universe is created. Donnie needs to survive so that he can bring it back to the normal universe. If he died in the beginning then the universe would end in 28 days 6 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds. But i still don't understand why donnie had to die at the end. The tangent universe was gone.

I think you misunderstood it. The movie alludes to the concept of channeling into other universes in our dreams. Donnie didn't travel back in time. The jet engine did. Also, the only reason the tangent universe was created is because Frank got Donnie out of bed, and Donnie did not return to bed. The only reason Frank can communicate with Donnie in the tangent universe is because Donnie kills Frank in the timeline. The reason of Donnie's significance is because he is directly correlated to the jet engine because it lands in his room. This is why Frank is a hallucination. I could go into this more in depth, but I don't even know if this will be seen, so fuck it. If you want me to do a reply video, I'll try.

Donnie's job was to protect the evil characters. Remember, this happened when the Rabbit came into the universe - not the engine on it's own. The Bunny was there to protect the 'anti-Christ' false preacher and he used Donnie to do it. The old lady seemed to have sold her soul when she was younger and then try to repent by veiling in her writing a book to others what to do if it happens because they likely like near a portal hotspot on earth (usually has to do with laylines). Speaking of that, this came out about 8 months before September 11, 2001 and was filmed in 2000. If you guys couldn't see the BLARING 9/11 references then wow you guys seriously need to brush up on your 'life knowledge' a bit because the movies won't be as fun. DJMPTV You have to know what rabbits symbolize. The Rabbits are used by David Lynch in his movies. He has a short about nothing but the Rabbits. The Rabbits are essentially dead souls in purgatory who belong to Satan, but aren't in hell yet. They get called back up to earth to do tasks. What the Rabbits do is aid and protect the children of Satan. So basically the 'anti-Christ' character would have got arrested in the main world, but this whole time lapse was to ensure that he didn't get arrested in the main world. Of course, I read all these online. Watch the film again keeping in mind that Donny is there to protect the anti-Christ guy and then you'll see all the hints. The kingdom of Satan is always united and never divided. Their arguments are always superficial to fool the rest of us. Both Donny and the anti-Christ guy belonged to Satan so Donny was called to go back into time and change an outcome. Human sacrifice was also involved.

    1) Why does Frank wake up Donnie in the first place?
    2) If the engine from a different timeline falling on Donnie's room was the artifact / event that created the tangent universe, why was it not re-established upon it falling in for the second time. And / or why did it even fall on Donnie's room after being sent back to it's proper universe?
Please respond! I love debating these sorts of things!

    • @whitedragoness23
      @whitedragoness23 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

From what I’ve read online there’s a glitch in the time line. it seems to indicate it’s the artifact which has no explanation of where it came from. But it seems like the artifact appears in the main time line so Donnie living has to be the glitch making the time line unstable. His death would make it stable again. But that wouldn’t explain why Frank saved him then.

The explanation has some right points, but also some flaws.
First: Donnie himself never time-travels. The only thing that is time-traveling is the jet engine. Donnie pushes it through the time-portal and sends it all the way back to the point, where the tangent universe began. This results in the tangent universe rewinding itself back to that point, which is why we see the scenes backwards.
Second: Donnie did not have to die. The paradox was not caused, because he survived. That wouldn't even make sence, because Donnie only suvived because Frank warned him. And Franks major purpose is to make Donnie save the universe. If Donnie could save the universe by dying in the first place, than why should Frank get him out of the house?
The reason Donnie is rescued is that he is "chosen" to save the universe. Only he can do it and that's why Frank has to save his live. Donnie then saves the universe by pushing the engine through the portal. Donnie could have just stood up, walk away and suvive, but he didn't. There are 2 reasons I could imagine for this: Number 1: Donnie did not remember. Everybody else woke up and thought the events from the tangent universe were just a dream. And so did Donnie. He thought "Man, would a wierd dream" and got back to bed laughing, not knowing that a jet engine is coming. Number 2: He had a good live in the tangent universe. He had happiness and enjoyed live. He "replaced all the bad things with good things" like it was said in one scene. And after he was afraid to die alone in the beginning, he was actually happy and fine with it in the end.

  • @AnonymousRDy

    Lets go deeper:
The tangent universe also had to happen. If you think about it, in order for the events that lead to the tangent universe to occur, you have to assume that the tangent universe had to happen. Without the tangent universe, there was no engine to slam into Donnies house. Without him having shot Frank in the face, there would have been no bunny to guide him through the tangent universe in the first place. Its a lot deeper than you actually realize.

    • @WoWitsGeorgii
      @WoWitsGeorgii 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's a popular belief that the events that happened to Donnie have happened on and endless loop throughout history. Originally in the primary universe, the jet engine appeared out of no where with no explanation of its existence, which defies the laws of physics and would bring an end to the universe, why it takes 28 days for the world to end is something I don't know, probably just to set a time frame for the plot. But anyway, for some reason Donnie is the person who's responsible for giving the engine a reason to exist; basically on the 28th day he uses the powers the manipulated dead gave him to rip off the jet engine from the plane his mom and sister is on and brought it back with him through time so then the jet engine would have a logical reason to it's existence because it didn't appear just out of nowhere, it came from the future, which is technically a logical explanation because time travel is possible. IMO it's like a paradox that causes and endless loop (like if you go back in time and bang your mother so that her only child is you; you have no exact origination but it loops for ever and ever because you are your own father; it cant be explained) but I think there's so much to this movie which allows for multiple meanings of the same story.

This screen has absolutely no limits it can display or render anything that you can imagine and even more. RIght now it happens to be rendering and displaying what's right here. What we can do though is imagine that to this screen runs a giant wire and this wire hooks up to this giant mixing board with hundreds of knobs and each one of these knobs can be tuned and adjusted fine-tuned to change what is being displayed. It's like if you twist this knob here the colors will become more vivid, you twist this knob here the colors will dim, you twist this knob here the sounds will go wonky, they'll become louder or softer, you twist this knob here and you'll feel emotion you'll feel love or anger or hatred or jealousy or sadness, you twist this knob over here and your body morphs, your hand will morph into a tentacle, you twist a little bit more it turns into a claw, you twist a little bit more it turns into a wing, you twist a little more turns into something else and you can twist all of these and all of these knobs control everything that's being rendered and displayed on this screen called consciousness

So I did several projects on this movie and your video caught my eye. The one thing I wish you had gone into more detail about is Frank's presence in the tangent universe. Since time is on a stable loop (even in the tangent universe), there is always a Donnie in the tangent universe trying to get back to the primary universe. This means that Donnie will always shoot Frank. Since Frank is a manipulated dead, that means he can act separately from the timeline to help Donnie. Hope that helps. :)

It's a little less of a deja-vu and more of a strange, un-namable familiarity. The Philosophy of Time Travel reveals most will never remember the events that occurred, but may be haunted by it in their dreams. So they may have a subtle "hey they look like someone I dreamed about.." but that's it. However, Gretchen never met Donnie's mom in the tangent universe. So it's possible it was a polite wave since Gretchen was staring and Donnie's mom was just grieving and felt funny being stared at.

Imo she's a perfect example of what Donnie said to the teacher, how life isn't just a Love/Fear duality. The girl is so scared around people, using that silly defense mechanism, telling everyone to "SHUT UP!". But you can tell that she means no harm, that there's a lovely sensitive girl hiding behind that fear (that she reveals in the talent show). So, you can't just say she is a bad person based on the apparently rude girl telling everyone to shut up, there's more to her than that.

This actually has a bit of sense, Frank HAD to take out donnie to make a sense in a linear time cause if frank hadn't lured donnie the engine wouldn't have came down, in other words, the problem is made when the metal artifact exist, if someone dies with a metal artifact that cames from nowhere then it have to be saved by someone to assure that eventually the person saved throw the metal artifact to the past to kill himself to make a sense to explain why the metal artcifact was there in the begining (or where it came from)... not sure if i could explain myself here.

No, Frank crossed him into the tangent universe and if he had not, then the main universe would just pause or not exist anymore, no jet engine would have fallen because of the time travel grandfather paradox.
Frank had to get him into the tangent universe so he can do what he was meant to do, solve the paradox and give the engine a logical point of origin.

The movie has nothing to do with "time travel" which is just a metaphor for the underlying theme. The movie is about the transcendental nature of Truth, and the existential search for it. That search for truth is extremely dangerous, and can lead to insanity and/or death. The movie begins and ends by showing the sketch of the "eye" in Donnie's room. That eye is the ancient symbol of the search for truth/knowledge. In the end, you see a skull at the center of the eye, signifying the dangers. Yet, the search for Truth is still necessary, and only those who are willing to sacrifice everything are willing to undertake that journey. Donnie Darko tries to search for the Truth, and his honest about his own ignorance and limitations, but still fails to complete the journey, and bring back some useful knowledge for humanity. Thus, it was as if his journey never existed at all and was erased (that is the ending.) Even still, his tale is worth telling, and he is the "hero", because the other characters either lie and pretend to know the truth (the motivational speaker), or are ambivalent at its existence (the postmodernist English teacher) or only accept the empirical (Science teacher) or are superficial political bandwagon types (his sister). Only Donnie is truly interested in Truth, even though he has no idea how to find it... But at least he tried... That's the movie.

the characters and their part in the story was really muddled, dont think sarah died enough why not kill her a few more times for good measure
. My personal view is he wanted to create a movie that was more mysterious and clever than the first but missed the whole point, a second movie done right could of been really good, what i wanted to know is why and what caused the errors in time. To me a sequel to a movie like this should elaborate on the first movie while keeping to the universe rules set in the first movie.

***** No, Frank did not lead him to the mountain road. He sleepwalks on his own to the road. The time bump starts a few hours after in his bedroom, then we see Frank leading Donnie out of his house.

Even if the jet engine does fall off, it doesn't mean that the plane would crash. Planes can fly with one engine.

I think your analysis is very off note.. Let's try this one out.
You all are taking this to literally, yes Frank told him the universe would end in 28 days... However no ones looking at it realistically, Frank meant the universe as Donnie "knew it" would end. His own personal world and very existence, his girlfriend dying, frank dying, mom and sister dying, etc.. etc.. etc.. So he knew that in order to save everyone from this future, he had to let himself die in his bed under the plane engine that was going to crash through his roof. It was going to end up there inevitably anyways... He sacrificed himself for the greater good of everyone including himself.
The mom and the daughter didn't die, because the engine fell through the wormhole and back into time crushing Donnie in his sleep therefore the whole plot got changed because now the family is grieving the loss of Donnie. Events have changed, the daughter didn't get seen in the talent show and then invited to perform on star search blah blah blah.. So therefore no flight to LA, no mom n daughter dying in a firey plane crash.. Regardless of his mom n sister being on the plane or not, the plane was still going to have failure issues and the engine was still going to detach and enter the wormhole outputting itself over Donnie's house whether they were on the plane or not..
The entire universe was not going to be destroyed because if it was there would of been no ending... Everyone would of been blipped out of existence instead it ended leaving everyone with the feeling of Deja Vu.. and the feeling that something happened to them that really didn't including Donnie.
The movie was a clear depiction of the famous question "What if" What if Donnie hadn't died under the engine, how would his life of unraveled over the next 28 days... Let's show the audience of the impending doom that was to come because Donnie was reaching the end of his rope with his mental conditions.. The lives he would destroy, end and yet also influence at the same time.. To take it all away with showing him laughing in his bed, rolling over to go to sleep and bam, engine falls through... crushes him and he's dead.. None of this other stuff actually happened, it was all a "What If" scenario.
Donnie like a lot of people finding the lord and the word of the bible, found Roberta Sparrows book to latch himself on to for answers and explanations as to why similar things were happening to him. So he got hooked on the concept of time travel and tangent universes to render him the explanation as to why all this was or could happening.
Sidenote : I find it funny that the kid Larry Riesman in the "Promo" video for overcoming fear about wetting the bed, was aslo the same kid that stood up in school during the seminar and asked Cunningham about what to do about being bullied...
This is common amongst the workings of people like Jim Cunningham's character, it's to endorse and strengthen the belief that the system they are pushing actually works. Bait n Hook.. The kid was probably on a tape or stack of photos in the pedophiles kiddy porn dungeon anyways.

No, the universe would pause or an infinity loop will be the case. You are not taking it for what it is. Your take is not consistent with a complete explanation. The non literal elements are compatible with the technical explanation, just not the way you put it.

@ZackJ100 Your comments seem to assume that the donor aircraft in the tangent universe will crash as a result of the engine loss. This is very likely wrong. Believe it or not, the turbofan engines of modern jet airliners are designed to come off the airplane if certain extreme stresses are put on the airframe. They are actually attached with bolts designed to shear at a certain overload. This is intended to protect the integrity of the wing which, unlike the engine, is truly vital to controlled flight. What's more, partly due to the foregoing design feature, jet engines DO fall off of airliners unexpectedly. It happens with a frequency that would shock the flying public. When it happens you might expect an nothing more dramatic than the shudder you see Donnie's mom experience on her flight in the Tangent Universe. An engine could be lost and the passengers might not even notice. If the engine came off as designed, the aircraft should have little difficulty making an emergency landing at the nearest airport. (Incidentally, all modern jetliners are designed to be able to suffer a single engine loss and still make a safe landing.) This is not to say that a jet shedding an engine is a trivial matter. The NTSB/FAA will investigate, they will be very interested in where the lost engine was deposited and why it came off. However, there is no reason to assume Donnie's mom and sister die in a jet crash in the Tangent Universe. The contrary is implied in the film, IMO, and the technical facts support that interpretation.
    Fun vid, BTW.

In the movie American Beauty, the cops nab the fleeing kids Ricky and Jane for the murder of Lester, even though Frank did it. Framed for first degree murder, the two will be separated and spend their lives behind bars. This is deciphered by several clues in the movie - Angela keeps calling him a “psycho” (talking heads reference) and doesn’t see Frank commit the crime, or see Ricky and Jane flee the scene; she is the star witness having discovered Lester’s body, and she had just got into a fight with Ricky and Jane before the murder - but the giveaway is that the opening scene is *a grainy video* - not film quality, therefore it’s actually a video being played back somewhere, as opposed to part of the real movie - *which is being played at Ricky and Jane’s trial for the murder of Lester* with *all the other characters testifying against them* covering up for Ricky’s dad Frank, who really did it. The video is a *smoking gun* which lets Frank craft for the cops a phony story that his son did it. This opening scene is disguised as mere foreshadowing. It is not. We see Ricky and Jane filming the video in jest later in a tender moment, but Ricky’s dad Frank - who regularly snoops on his son’s videos - probably saw this video without that moment as Ricky turns off the camera at a natural dramatic point before embracing Jane - and in the cops’ eyes it’s the nail in the coffin to send the kids to prison. (It is possible that the cops find the video without Frank handing it to them; I’m not sure if Frank saw that specific video, because I think Frank thinks Ricky and Lester are lovers, and the video clearly shows that Ricky is straight, I think it is made after he had made love with Jane. Regardless the cops find the video.) The cops think he stole his dad’s gun with his spare keys and killed Lester with his girlfriend, who is asked by Ricky in the video, “You want me to kill him?” and Jane says, “Yeah, would you?” All the kids at school already think Ricky’s a freak, and the cops may already know him because of his probation. And they’re caught fleeing the scene with cash to connect with friends of Ricky’s in NYC who supply drugs for him to sell to people like Lester etc. Not a good look. None of the other characters would vouch for them in such a trial. Carolyn is self-interested because *she was about to kill Lester herself* over his discovery of her affair with the Real Estate King and him having thereby acquired legal grounds for divorce, claiming half of the funds she has earned as a realtor. She has the exact same gun, has been firing it all day at the shooting range, and hides it in a hamper - she would be a prime suspect herself so she goes along with the false narrative, telling the cops that she doesn’t know how the gun got there, having little in the way of mother-love for Jane. Angela hates Ricky and is jealous of the love Ricky and Jane share, confused by it like the Heathers were in that other interesting movie about a (actual psycho killer) dark protagonist and his complicit girlfriend (but I digress). Ricky has been to a mental institution and is already on some kind of piss-test probation. And Frank frames his own son. Indeed, Frank wouldn’t have approached Lester romantically with the backup plan of murdering him if he refused, if he didn’t already know he could pin the murder on Ricky. He seems to have gotten lucky that Carolyn had ample reason to lie about the *literal smoking gun* in her hamper. As a quick bonus; the record “American Beauty” is a folk-rock classic by the *Grateful Dead* - a band beloved by Boomers like Lester; and Lester dies with a smile on his face. Get it? Grateful. Anyhoo. You can confirm what I am saying about the trial from the original script, which is somewhere out there online. In it; the actual trial is the beginning of the movie. They cut it out to make it a puzzle. Clever movie.

There's still a few things that have bugged me since seeing DD and readings countless walls-of-text about the movie.
e.g. 'Ghost' Frank had to save Donnie, so Donnie could kill Frank (among other things). But Ghost Frank can only travel through the TU timeline if he is killed in the timeline to become a manipulated dead. How did he travel back to wake Donnie up if human Frank is still alive and kicking in the TU? Perhaps manipulated dead come to be NOT after they're killed, but if they're destined to die (if their death is inevitable in the TU). ???
I really do like this movie but there are a few things that still can't be explained, and all we can say is "god did it" (or higher power, 4D beings, aliens etc.) I also sometimes get the feeling that Richard Kelly himself doesn't have an explanation for some of the events and will never be able to give a full explanation as to what the fuck we've all watched.

  • @KrisDVUS

Fantastic explanation...up until the end. You have pretty much all of it right, up until what happens now that the tangent is destroyed and no longer exists.
Just as Donnie chose to go back, reversing everything, all of those who were part of the tangent did as well. It was beyond their control, however everything that did happen, happened, but in a tangent universe, however when Donnie went back, the memories of that tangent remained.
The vessel is very clearly stated as being the Aircraft Donnies mother and sister were in. Gretchen is killed, Cunningham is exposed, Frank is shot and killed (though I imagine Donnies sister still ends up voting for Dukakis). All of this as a result of Donnie not being killed by the falling jet engine.
How did this happen to begin with? Donnie getting access to the book Grandma Death wrote. Her existence, repeating the same thing every day looking for a letter, shows she has been stuck in a loop for a very long time.
This means that Donnie has repeated this before, in fact him messing around with time travel in the first place is what caused the jet engine to fall off of the plane his mother and sister were in. He essentially was the cause of everything bad that happened in the film.
The exit to the portal is clearly scene above Donnies house and there is a scene where you can see the airplane flying above the entry of the portal. It all began there.
When Donnie figures out how to close the loop, everything reverses back to the beginning, October 2nd. 1988. Then rolls the scene where major characters are startled awake from what they think is a horrible dream...they remember everything.
So in the end, yes Cunningham is exposed, Donnies teacher wont be teaching the Fear and Love Lifeline, his therapists and family realize Donnie is not in fact crazy, Gretchen lives, Donnies sister votes for Dukakis and Charita chuts up.
This is finalized at the very last scene when Getchen and Donnies mother wave at one another.

I think this is the only explanation which is mostly correct or totally correct.... i don't know why but everyone missing that at the very first the jet engine fall from nowhere, and that can't just happen....donnie must have done something previously which cause the jet engine to fall...
but still i; have a question which i think you have a answer to...
beginning of the movie we see , frank calling donnie so that he could survive the jet crash..... but where the hell frank came from?? he wasn't created until he was shot by donnie.... can u explain??

@@recommended4u892 I have no idea if this makes any sense whatsoever but maybe the first scene we are shown in the movie is the beginning of one of many previous loops of the same thing (it being the jet falling but Donnie escaping and yada yada all that bad stuff that happens) so bcs there are previous loops that have been done, Frank has been created in the end of the first loop, being shot by donnie (in which I don’t know how he appeared at the beginning of this loop without first being shot by Donnie) and therefore can ‘warn’ donnie to get out the house, putting everyone again in yet another loop, only this time donnie actually figures it out

The Philosophy of Time travel reveals in the movie that the manipulated living of the tangent universe (all those living in the tangent universe surrounding the living receiver, Donnie) are subconsciously aiding the living receiver and sending clues as how to sent the artifact back to the Primary Universe.
