The care bear sticker on the fridge at the beginning of the film is foreshadowing. The care bears shoot love out of their chest and Donnie darko and his family have worm holes coming out of their solar plexus later on in the film.

    A quick explanation:
Donnie Darko is about the tangent universe theory. basically, there's the main universe and at one point (when the jet engine falls on Donnie's room) a tangent universe is formed. A tangent universe is a complete carbon copy of the main universe but it is very unstable and will collapse in a short amount of time (28:06:42:12) by causing a black hole big enough to swallow the tangent universe AND the main universe, hence ending the world.
If you watch the director's cut it is explained that every one who survives the tangent universe (everyone except Frank and gretchen) is called the manipulated living, they need to make sure that Donnie can return back in time through the portal to when the dimensional split occured and he has to die to prevent the dimensional split. This is why the characters didn't act like humans, because they had a set role they were unconsciously fulfilling.

What so insane about Kingdom Hearts plotline...Its about darkness, and a child using a 4 foot key to seal away that darkness, and those trying to fill him with darkness or light, and sometimes get at his darkness. Where a 3 foot mouse commands a 6 foot dog and 4 foot duck to accompany him in a ship made of gummi to various disney worlds to take back the souls of people being stolen by a man inside his childhoods friends darkness. I like a story that shows what happens when you avoid an inevitable death....everything seems off, unnatural, weird, bizarre. I think the nature of the characters we see are intentionally that way, like you suggested. It's a slightly bizarro world, therefore the characters seem slightly off..

    • @EvenTheDogAgrees
      @EvenTheDogAgrees 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It's been many years since I saw this, but from what I remember him not dying when he was supposed to was creating a rip in the fabric of the universe, which would eventually destroy everything. Grandma Death or whatever they called her wrote a book about it, because it's a semi-regular occurance, apparently. And from that point on, the universe will do everything it can to steer him in the right direction, by "puppeteering" the people around him in order to manipulate him to do The Right Thing (TM).
Wasn't there like a director's cut that had a lot more material and explained it rather clearly (and basically ruined the mistique by taking away all the guesswork and interpretation)?
Anyway, I also like the Jacob's Ladder interpretation Madfox presented. Which reminds me I should definitely rewatch both Donnie Darko and Jacob's Ladder.

But my chorus teacher genuinely cared about us and like twice a month she would have a "centering day" where she would have us do meditation for like 25 minutes and then asked us to share how we felt afterwards if we wanted. It was the most calming parts of the school year and it was really surprising to see other teenagers open up about they were struggling that day or that week. A lot of schools were doing programs based on junk psychology at the time while bashing "negative influences" as pornography. My grade school principal (who was something of a Reagan-ite) started a program called 'Positive Actions' and I just couldn't stand it. Some of the younger kids liked it but I was in the sixth grade, I didn't want to deal with that shit.

My older brother was starting 5th or 6th grade in 88 remembers that era and all the weird psychology stuff. By the time I started 6th grade in the mid 90s we didn't have it anymore thankfully. And movies right after 9/11 were trying to be more...uplifting? I guess I would say because a lot of audiences were trying to escape the gloom and depression that lingered after 9/11 but if I'm not mistaken this movie was filmed before 9/11 and released right around it. By the late 90's/ early 2000's it would be Harry Potter brainwashing kids into paganism and witchcraft and Marylin Manson's music causing school shootings. And then came the REALLY insane stuff, like the preacher who claimed the Telletubbies were sending out subliminal messages to turn toddlers into gay, crossdressing, Satanists. It's the combination cinematography, color tones, music, and just the weird-ass dialogue--which is surreal because I was like 5 during the time setting of the movie. "Hey, you guys, guess what?! My Mom said the school is closed today because it’s flooded. " "Holy shit! That's the best news I've ever heard!"
Also, you stopped right before the best line in the movie.
"You'll put Ariel in the garbage disposal."
    "Goddamn right, I will."

One of my psych papers had an assignment where we were to diagnose a character from a film we hadn't seen, so I chose this. He does portray a schizophrenic character very well, though my job was kinda too easy given he's already taking medication and therapy for it. The question is, is everything else just in his mind? Pretty sure what was being watched here though was the director's cut, because the clearest evidence that there's more going on than just his delusions is Frank taking off his mask in the cinema. Everything else is kinda ambiguous; those water bubbles that show where someone will go never show anything beyond what could easily be viewed as an educated guess.
But yeah, if you watch the original theatrical version I hear it's a pretty good representation of someone going through schizophrenia. Perhaps that's part of the reason a lot of it is confusing awkward as it's trying to portray how people with schizophrenia view the world.

Personally I think Donnie Darko is accidental genius the movie. The director has never made another movie that people could agree was good. Donnie Darko is a complete fluke, which is why I think people are so split. Somebody who isn’t very good at directing made one movie that is maybe good? I almost think that he took this crazy idea and used his incompetence to stitch together a frankensteined movie that oddly works for me.
A lot of this movie is aesthetic. Donnie Darko is just like this feeling, this vibe. When I watch it I feel a certain way, like I’m in a hospital, a pristine bathroom, a closet at a party. It’s just grabs me and sucks me in every time of just got these visuals and feelings it invokes in me.
I also get this other worldly feeling from the movie. Like these are people but they aren’t. They’re people through an over dramatic lense. I think you’re suppose to relate to what each person represents but you don’t relate to them exactly as like, people, on a deeper level. You relate to what Donnie stands for but you feel disconnected from him as a person, like you don’t understand him. I like that though, like I can’t recall any movie where I genuinely don’t fully understand the main character or like at least can’t relate to his emotions.
Either way, this movie is exactly what inspires me to want to create. This stilted world that ours but not always interests me. It’s always interesting to explore these different people, like watching aliens. It’s amazing and I crave every minute of it.

    • @yuyuesun1573
      @yuyuesun1573 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I agreed with you about"accidental genius" part. For me, this movie is one of the best teenager film. Donnie Darko faced the classic teenager issue: confused, has unique thought that didn't follow authority and never sure he is really right or not. Teenagers in this movie feel like real teenagers rather than Cartoon horny kids nowadays in the movie. Time Travel is just a plot device for Donnie Darko to grow up. That is this kind stuff should be used. But I think the director Richard Kelly completely missed point what make Donnie Darko good at first place. He just fall into Time Travel "arty stuff" and never catch on again.

That's like saying star wars, sixth sense, and the matrix are accidental genuis. They clearly cared about the productions and working hard even if their careers demonstrate a severe lack in quality. Alot of the time is due to having too much creative control when films are a group effort

That otherworldy feeling is definetely there, and I think it might even be intentional. idk if you know the #DEEPLORE associated with the movie, but basically everyone in the movie is being influenced by some kind of higher power (aliens, god, etc, nobody knows) so everything has a really odd feel to it, almost like the whole movie is really just about donnie and this otherworldy being interacting with eachother. It gives me the same feeling of awe that the ending scene of annihilation(great movie btw) does, where you feel the presence of something incomprehensible and it just adds so much to the experience.

Oh, wow, okay. Now I see why the Director's Cut is recommended so highly. It fills in a lot of the blank spaces, helps with transitions by giving pieces of the time travel book, plus shows that everyone in the town remembers the last 28 days, 6 hours, yadda yadda, but isn't sure if it was a dream. Certainly worth a rewatch if you can get that version, it'll make more sense. Well, as much sense as an intentionally obfuscated movie can make.

I like the foreshadowing in this movie (like “cellar door” for example), the lecture about wormholes in time and space, how predictable people’s everyday lives are symbolized by elongated bubbles (fact: it was inspired by those NFL commentary drawings while the director was high) and in this scene the family ARE watching football, Frank’s rabbit mask is cool AF and I want one, the credit’s theme: mad world fits the film so well, divergence in the timeline, tangential universe, grandfather paradox, and the end of Donnie’s world: losing the life of the girl who had crush on him.
Time loops back to the point where donnie should have died via jet engine falling onto his house (1. the same engine came from a few days into the future where his mom and sister won the talent show but there was an engine failure on the flight to California eventually killing them in a plane crash) (2. Donnie was supposed to die but frank’s arrival interfered by leading Donnie away on the exact night it was going to fall on his house),
I forgot to mention Donnie takes medication because he has schizophrenia, going to therapy and talking about seeing a demonic rabbit telling him the end of the world is coming and instructing him to stir up some vandalism....yeah, that doesn’t look too good.
Im still amazed that donnie is seeing the frank unmasked at the movie theater and having a laugh, the same guy he would murder a couple days later because frank ran over the only girl who cared about Donnie. (He lost her, he lost his parents and sister to a plane malfunction. It is the end of the world, his world. A mad world)
Anyway after the Halloween climax, as a result the girl lives on having a slight case of deja vu, and life goes on.
It’s a few details that make rewatching this movie interesting just searching for.
Like seeing frank in the background earlier in the movie (as a regular guy without the costume)
News report talking about plane crashes
Someone tampered with the plane’s jet engine days before in advance.
Flight crew commenting on the strange weather and dismissing the conversation before take off.
I apologize if this doesn’t make sense or has a number of mistakes, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it, or read the explanation, philosophy of time travel. It’s just what I remember.

Your thoughts are still clumsy and unrefined but it's still an accomplishment to put more thought into the world around you.
That's pretty much this movie's theme in a nutshell. This movie is clumsy and awkward, but it's trying to explore deeper meanings and thoughts. And the audience that likes it seem to be in that stage of growth.

I love this movie because it makes great use of Chekhov's hammer in the sense that it ties up loose ends very well. Nothing is this movie is actually wasted. Everything comes back to mean something, and every time you watch it, you pick up on another recurring detail you previously missed.
It's a very consice film from that viewpoint, something which is extremely rare in today's cinema. Another film that is similarly concise is Master & Commander because everything you see is what you get (though it's adapted from the series of the same name, it follows the events of a single book in the series, with enough liberties taken to give the impression of a larger world outside that on screen).
Donnie Darko is remembered for being a film that truly comes full circle. Whether or not that makes it a good story is another matter. But cinematically, it's an excellent movie.
EDIT: Fixed the spelling of Chekhov. Good catch, thanks.

The underlying point of the story is that everything which happens is upsetting an already delicate domestic balance. Of course the dialogue is going to be awkward. You'd be awkward in the same circumstances.
