Early preparation is so important, it allows you to sell the drop, drawing your opponent forward and making the lob that much more effective. Very satisfying when you hear the brakes come on and rushed back peddling from your opponent desperately trying to retrieve your lob. Cheers Rich!

Thanks for your comment and to be fair apologies this was not so clear in the video. I discussed about trying to get the ball as high up on the front wall but the angle target I didn’t emphasize. Obviously your position can slightly changing eh court so therefore your target on the front wall will also but a general rule if aiming for the cross court lob to head towards the side wall behind the opposite service box will be the center of the wall or just slightly to the right of center if aiming into the right back corner or slightly left of center if aiming back left corner. The closer you are to the side walls when hitting the. the wider the angle will be and the closer to the middle of the court the more narrow the angle. Good luck 👍🏼

@@richkingcoaching I have found that ultimately you want your lob to make first contact with the side wall and behind the service box, very similar to your target when lob serving. The lob is usually considered to be a defensive shot that creates time for you when under pressure. Used against inexperienced opponents, it becomes a formidable attack. Forcing an opponent to strike the ball above their shoulder level is always difficult for them, even at the pro level. Best regards and Skål.

should you keep your arm loose for the lob

Thanks for your question and to be honest you raise a very good one! The circumstance will greatly impact the ‘looseness’ that can exist in your arm. To play a successful lob you must be balanced whether that be firstly in your lower body but also in your upper body and particularly the swinging arm. As we tend to play lobs when really under pressure usually the physical demand or balance needed is even greater than normal so I don’t coach to be ‘soft’ in the arm. Keeping good intention in your follow through should give enough purpose to the arm and body though to sustain good balance when playing the shot. I teach more to get feeling from the fingers and perhaps the wrist if needed than a really loose arm however being to tense or stiff can also be detrimental. Find a sweet spot and I would better use the phrase relaxed than loose arm :) loose sounds low in muscle tone and therefore won’t be stable enough to perform the shot 👍🏼 hope that helps and best of luck :)

Very poignant point at the end. Meike was miscoordinating her movement and spacing, due to misjudging the trajectory of the ball. The outcome of this is that she would take the ball behind her, therefore had to compensate with the wrist, and hence flunked some of her lob shots. Connecting the dots between all of these pieces of information is eye opening!
Overall very instructive vid on the lob! (:
