Holding the drop shot and showing a full backswing will make your drop very deceptive as well as effective.

Thanks for your comment. Its funny you write about this topic as just very recently i've had a lot of discussions with some pros I coach in the neccessity to sometimes do things just quick and simple. Deception in itself is a great aspect of the game to learn and develop and highly neccesary to add this layer especially at the top level. Sometimes though as an example it is just as effective to play a drop shot in quickly and securely (particularly when its slightly pressured scenario and more stability is required) the opponent may sense the drop is coming but just forcing a quick response from your opponent due to the early moment of striking it is enough to apply pressure as it takes time away from your opponent anyway. At the highest level being overly deceptive can break your opponents rythmn in a good way but it can also give opportunity to reset or get time back under pressure especially if taking the ball slightly later. I generally teach roughly 75/80% of your shots should be hit at the optimum moment of timing and then the deceptive varied timing is the 'extra special' addition to cause problems and other challenges to your oppenent. Then you have a perfect combo where both scenarios help each other and keep your opponent unsure of which moment to respond to.

@@richkingcoaching I couldn't agree more with everything you have added. I feel you have to stay in the moment and keep mixing things up to avoid being predictable. If you don't know what shot you're about to execute, how is your opponent supposed to defend against the unknown. Deception is great but early strikes certainly will keep opponents guessing. Best regards Rich.
