Nice hot dipped galvanized trailer Wayne, it should serve you well. If you have never made rode trips pulling a boat or any trailer, you need to be aware all the time you have a trailer. Trailers affect turning radius, how you navigate traffic, and how you behave on a highway or interstate. New trailer pullers sometimes forget they are towing, and driving instincts kick in and you are trying to pass a vehicle you would normally pass not towing, however passing with a trailer, requires much more time, and distance traveled in order to safely pass.
Your trailer should hold up well except for the rustable parts like the springs hubs and some of the nuts, bolts, and brackets. Treating them with some rust preventative and rinsing off road salt or salt water often should allow you to maintain them for a long time.
Good luck and congrats on the street legal trailer... Joe

Ive noticed with heavier engines like my 15hp mercury 4 stroke, Ive liked a transom saver. It definitely gives you piece of mind that your motor is not bouncing everywhere when you drive. Small thing but makes such a difference for me

Great video and nice new trailer! One thing I would do is grab a spare trailer tire and mount. Also, it’s a good idea to have some tools and a jack if your vehicle does not have one.

Completely agree with the spare tire, tools and a jack. If you put and outboard of any size on the back, make sure you use a transom saver to keep the weight of the outboard supported. I trailer my boat about 2000 miles/year with a 50 hp on it. Bearings have been the biggest issue; even when well cared for. BTW if your boat is under a certain size in MN, you don't need trailer plates.@@WayneTheBoatGuy

Looks great! As the season winds down I just did my annual trailer check, it definitely doesn't get the same amount of love as the boat lol

My nephew and his dad went in on a 16ft boat and trailer they found on the big island of Hawaii. He went over a speed bump on the way to the boat ramp. As it went over and came down the axle tube crumbled and broke. The tube had rusted from the inside out leaving a galvanized shell looking intact and normal. Boat ownership has many ups and downs.

I feel like we need to meet Wayne! I live in northern Baltimore county and fish Prettyboy with my Old Town Sportsman 154 square stern canoe (with Newport NT300). It came with a Harbor Freight kit trailer that the previous owner made some mods to, however, similar to you, I have yet to get it tagged since I live less than five miles from the boat ramp. I would have to go through the same process of applying for the "homemade trailer" but it just doesn't seem worth it. Thanks for the plug for Venture (didn't know they were local) - I have also heard PWC is good, and someone else said you can do a "build your own" canoe trailer online.
As far as good spots locally, you should try putting in at Joppatowne (Marnier Point Park) and tool around the Bird and Gunpowder Rivers. There's also Dundee creek in Essex and I've always wanted to cruise the harbor, especially when those outdoor concerts are going on. Thanks for the good content per usual!

Great video the trailer looks awesome for the most part I'm all about fishing in salt water but thats not what matters what matters is getting the boat on the water and enjoying yourself looking for those good memorable times that will become stories to tell when talking with friends and family

Hey Wayne, If you ever venture a road trip to Florida, I’d love to be your tour guide for some great exploration in Florida’s Nature Coast region on the gulf coast. We have some amazing lakes, rivers and gulf shore marshes to explore in a small boat!

Hi Wayne! I have a 53 year old 14' alumacraft, the trailer it came on was in such bad shape that I had to haul it home on my utility trailer. I was going to rebuild the trailer but I decided I'd rather be boating and fishing instead of rebuilding a boat trailer. I bought a new load rite trailer and a new 5hp propane powered mercury outboard. This was the best money I spent. The boat and old trailer combined was $200. The mercury outboard was $1200 and the load rite trailer $1100. I can go anywhere anytime and not worry about trailer failure or engine failure. I fish and boat all over the place with no travel limits. I've boated in lake Ontario all the way to Rehoboth Bay and almost everywhere in between including the Susquehanna river. You are going to love your new boating freedom! I do! I use amsoil marine grade grease on my axle bearings, it seems to be holding up well even in salt water

I don't know if Maryland is anything like NY but here an inspection for a small trailer without brakes is literally a visual inspection. Normally takes 5 minutes never heard of an issue with a new one got my 11 year old used trailer inspected as is with no issues

a good quality ratchet strap to go over the rear of the boat should hold it on nicely. also a hitch pin lock is good to have as many trailers are stolen, especially a nice new one

I bought a 1981 12 foot Dura Craft aluminum V hull boat on a Piper Bros trailer for $215 yesterday! Piper Bros manufacturing was out of Memphis, TN and they closed up everything in 1986 (I looked online). I tore the trailer apart and sanded it down today, then will paint it probably tomorrow. It's a cool lookin trailer with a strange suspension that I've never seen before. The bearings roll smooth and the tires are good. The boat is in decent shape too, the guy said it didn't leak! We'll see. I just couldn't pass up an Aluminum V hull boat and trailer for $215 bucks!

I just got a brand new trailer for my skiff too. Not easy to bite that bullet in the moment but it's definitely worth it. You either buy peace of mind or buy the consequences.

Here in TN, they could careless about lights, tags, or even missing wheel on tandem axle trailers. But you better not have tinted windows or a headlight out here🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Great video on trailers. All 6 of my boat trailers are in good shape. 5 of them are 80's and 90's I've keep after them, I did get a new one in 22' for my 14 ft alum. I got tired of dragging it on and off my flat bed utility trailer. I'm glad I did. I take my 14ft. all over the place now, different rivers and lakes. You need to come up to Haver de Grace or Perryville Md. and launch your boat and see the historic Susquehanna River , and the Head of the Chesapeake Bay.

Deviant outlaw like me? Gee I hope not or you’re doing ok for such a bad criminal. About the trailer, awesome perfect choice! You can put the Whaler on it if you put your electric motor on because of the center of balance is way more forward. I have a 16 foot tri that goes on the small trailer like your trailer for the 12.

If youre driving on the highway Id look into a saftey chain to connect the boat to the trailer, not too expensive and is worth the extra security

I purchased a new trailer about 6 years ago. When my old trailer was removed, I notice that where the bunkers were up against my 16 ft aluminum boat, there were sections that started to pit and weaken the aluminum. I had four (4) sections patch with a new metal and welded on. The welder said he has been seeing this issue lately. He was not sure if it was due to the Saltwater or the chemicals in the Carpet and the Pressure treated boards. He did recommend that instead of using carpet, to put a telfon or other material on top of the boards to prevent this from recurring.

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy

I know that newer treated lumber doesn't play well with aluminum. Thanks for the heads up!

If there are serial numbers on the trailer, is it possible to file for a lost title ?

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

Some of these older trailers were never titled, but I would assume that would only work for the original title holder. But here in Maryland my old trailers would still all fail the inspection.

Don't forget to lock your spare I caught a couple sportsmen looking mine over when they found theirs flat lf my 4 hole rims had been 5 it would have been gone he told me. If it had been gone he'd of been looking for medical attention. Just saying and a new trailer sounds like a hot item too a bit of security for it maybe. Lot of shady types about. Too bad.
