A bit of advice for helping with stickiness while kneading; the vaseline also helps, but so does a little bit of extra cornstarch on your work surface, or added as required until it quits gumming up. Just like making bread dough for those of you who've ever done that.
Hey Zak and Scotty need some tips on the recipe. My first batch was a complete failure. The difference is I used olive oil instead of baby oil. Could never get it past the sticky phase. The more lotion I added the sticker it got. I spent almost 45 minutes in the kneading phase until I just had to call it quits. Just completed my second attempt after watching a couple other TH-camrs. One stated that Baby Oil is the catalyst ingredient needed to get it to work its magic while another stated to add additional cornstarch to make it less sticky (only add little bits at a time. This go round it took me 1.5 hrs to finally get to the end product. So, for me, I ended up adding almost another full cup of cornstarch to finally get it to the clumpy stage. Then began using the lotion and it only made it get sticker and sticker. I switched over to baby oil on my hands. As soon as I did this the stickiness reduced by about 90%. I did another dusting of corn starch and redid my hands with the baby oil and only then did all the stickiness go away and it finally turned into the product shown in the video. Are you sure the recipe calls for only 1 cup of corn starch? Maybe is should be updated to 2 cups? If you guys got it to work with one, then it has to do with my microwave cooking time or that I live in the Southwest and it has something to do with elevation, dryness of the air, or who knows what. I'd be thankful for any other tips you may have that you did while making but thought they may not be important to share at the time of making the vid. Scotty, love, love, love all the dedication you put into your channel and the craft! A place I visit multiple times a week. Never stop!
Thanks for the detailed account. I have seen recipes with two cups of cornstarch but then they use twice the oil and vinegar. I am thinking maybe you are not cooking long enough...As you state many factors can change the cook such as microwave wattage and weather. I had a batch that was undercooked and suffered the same super sticky problem. Also be careful with the baby oil as you do not want the final product too oily.
Baby oil is just scented mineral oil, you can find unscented in the laxative aisle. Also, if it cracks while drying, add more oil. This clay can be worked very thin, (I make flower petals with it) and you can get very realistic results coloring it with chalk pastels.
I made this (your recipe) a year ago and it is perfect. I never had any issues, it dries nice and hard, easy to work with, takes color great. I made a tiny carrot, but didn't think to color the clay before. I took an orange sharpie, it was a bit dark, so I wiped it off a bit then made some small brown lines. I rubbed the brown quick and it made them look so real. I used a green marker, not a sharpie, and wow I have to say, I was so impressed. It lasted for at least 9 months, probably would have lasted longer, but I used all of it. So to all of you watching this and wondering if it really works, YES IT DOES. The only one I use. Thank you so much for sharing. 😉
hiya! another tip for this clay: you can actually add color using some oil paint (oil is better than acrylic since is oil-based instead of water). if you don't want the translucid effect on it you can add some white paint and then boom you have white clay :) or you can also add pigment powder (some people prefer this one). I love this clay, I'm from Brazil and there the amount of people who craft with this clay is HUGE (we call it "biscuit" while other countries of latin america call it "porcelana fria") the community is so big, they do crazy stuff with this clay :)). great video btw, I just found your channel :) cheers

Hey Scotty, I just want to say I really appreciate how much show appreciation for your patrons. A lot of creators don't and it's great that you feature them in your videos to show your appreciation.
I just made mine and can't wait to use it tomorrow. I made & used to make different things with chocolate clay to put on cakes. I did 4 characters to go on a kid's cake. I loved working with the chocolate clay. I also did a groom's cake with chocolate clay molding it to look just like a friends motorcycle. Each piece, I put it on the top of the cake. So I can give it as a gift for 5 family members. Let me know your ideas!! I have a bunch of craft stuff.
Thank goodness at last a cold porcelain video I could watch all the way through. Most are next to useless but yours offers practical advice and shows the results as you go without dragging on forever. Look forward to checking out some more of your videos. Thanks again.
Great video and looking forward to the new clay videos. Also, I can’t tell you how much I love the dancing and all around unabashed goofiness. Literally laughing out loud.
How fast do you work, and in what scale? Making 28 mm minis requires something that doesn't air dry for me. I love cold porcelain for the big stuff (I can see why Scotty would make a purple worm out of it), but my little guys need something that doesn't harden up soon as I work slowly, take breaks, and sometimes life interrupts sculpting.
Zak Hoskins 28-30mm. My first were about a head taller than than they should have been. You can work pretty fast and still get an amazing product as well keeping a cup of water with a paint brush to ensure the piece doesn’t fully dry until your ready. Also I tend to build the heads separately and glue them on. Maybe not the best yet but I’m still learning too.
When I tried it awhile back I think it too half an hour of kneading and adding more corn starch. Don’t know why I had such a hard time with it that way.
Hi, you can make a flexible version (when it dries has flexibility) by changing the glue. this is particularly important if you have very thin parts in your sculpture (hair, hands, for example) because the flexibility will avoid the piece to break. Interesting. I read on Wikipedia just today, an article on "lanolin", and it mentioned that many people condition new leather baseball mitts with foam shaving cream that also contains lanolin to speed softening them and breaking them in!
i make this all the time i never cooked or heated it i just knead it and keep adding either corn flour or water till i get the dough i like then add in the oil comes out great every time .
tips after failing 3 times: 1. make sure you are using the correct glue GLUE-ALL, not school glue. 2. as stated by others, use corn starch to aid in reducing the stickiness, the baby oil works too. 3. if, like me, you accidentally overcook your clay (it will be rubbery and hard), use the same technique for softening normal clay: poke holes into but not all the way through, the let soak in a small amount of water for about 2-4 days. i checked my failed clay after two days of soaking, it went from breaking completely to attempting to do the clay test shown in the video. after 3.5 days the clay now completes the pull apart test! the last step is to work the clay in a technique called wedge. watch videos to replicate. Your over cooked or hardened clay is now ready to use again! ( i am hoping as i haven't actually used it yet, but it passed the test at least).
Thank you!!! I spent an hour trying to make this work, only to look through the comments and realize I was using the wrong glue. 😩 Do you or anyone else have tips on clean up?? I spent another hour scraping the glue and cornstarch off my bowl and work surface.
Hi there. I have a batch of this sitting in my work area but it seems slightly too soft. If I add a little cornstarch to it, does it need to sit another day before I can use it? Or should I chuck it and start over?
Thank you Scotty. That is some mighty advice and fantastic way to make your own clay! One question though, how long can work the material before it gets hard? And given thaf you store it in cling film and sealable bag, how long does it last in a container? Thank you!
Suggestions: Use the same oil on your hands to knead. Measure oil and put in measuring cup before you pour in glue, glue will come right out without sticking. Use corn starch on board to knead on, less sticking.

Hi Scotty, Just finished my first batch. Man, What a sticky mess. I stuck with it until I got to the loaf. I have a few questions. Mine never was lumpy. It was smooth and super sticky all the way through. With the lotion, I managed to knead it with my hands, but resorted to a spatula eventually. Finally got it into a loaf, but it was still very soft and sticky. I thought I followed the measurements exactly, but something went wrong. I just now put into a bag and container. Should I have added more cornstarch to firm it up before I put it away? Is it too late?
I think I had a fail...I did a half batch...after the first 15 sec cook it was a ball and rubbery. No sticky...where did I go wrong? I used high...30 second cook twice...then 15 second cook and it is like play dough...rubbery. Almost like...too dry. I will keep adding lotion and kneading to see it that helps.... Any suggestions?
Add a small amount of water to the surface of your sculped piece to get rid of fingerprints and smooth it out. I just dip my fingers in water and rub it on. I use cold porcelain more than any other clay. It's amazing.
Kind of a bonus and downside at the same time with this stuff is that since its cornstarch and glue, any left over bits or projects that failed can be left in water over night then added back to the wad... or just put the hard piece in the wad itself. Just avoid using that for a few days and work at it to help break it back down. Also if it starts to dry out add water. Ive had the same batch for 6 months now in an rubbermaid container at room temp. No mold, no funky smell, and whenever it'd start to dry id just work some water into it and it'd be back to day one workable. Side note: ground up charcoal dust mixed into the clay helps it dry faster as well as add some pigment. Also it works great when combined with foam "air" (foam) clay at 1-1 ratios. Lighter and better for filler on larger projects. Its a bit more resilient than some of the crafting channels will admit.

tips after failing 3 times: 1. make sure you are using the correct glue GLUE-ALL, not school glue. 2. as stated by others, use corn starch to aid in reducing the stickiness, the baby oil works too. 3. if, like me, you accidentally overcook your clay (it will be rubbery and hard), use the same technique for softening normal clay: poke holes into but not all the way through, the let soak in a small amount of water for about 2-4 days. i checked my failed clay after two days of soaking, it went from breaking completely to attempting to do the clay test shown in the video. after 3.5 days the clay now completes the pull apart test! the last step is to work the clay in a technique called wedge. watch videos to replicate. You could do an experiment and see how it works out.
BTW, do you store this in the fridge?
I don't but eventually it will become unworkable...In about a year.
Is it suitable for making cups or bowls?
I would not use it for liquid or food.
Thanks for sharing this, we will give it a try. I like your vibe. Keep doing what you do. ✌🏻
Thanks, have fun.
Gonna have to make a few batches 😁. Is it heavy or light when it is dry? Great video dm scotty thank you.
About the weight of polymer clay
TheDMsCraft thx 😉👍
Is it bad if my clay won’t stick together right after the kneading process?
Too sticky or too dry?
How do you prevent curling and warping while drying the clay
It can warp in molds but usually not a problem.
It sounds overcooked. Different microwaves have different power settings. Try getting the clay damp and seal for a day then try to work it.
then, do a shorter cook time the first cook and try 10 sec intervals if not cooked
Would this be a good material to do children's handprints?
I think it would work quite well.
Add a small amount of water to the surface of your sculped piece to get rid of fingerprints and smooth it out. I just dip my fingers in water and rub it on. I use cold porcelain more than any other clay. It's amazing.
Nice tip...Love the clay.
looks like a trip to my dollar store for all these supplies is in order
Nice...have fun
Interesting. How heavy is this stuff?
It does have some weight. About the same as sculpey.
Nice tips..thx..should this clay be stored at room temperature or in the fridge?thx
You can store at room temp but will stay viable longer in the fridge.
@@theDMsCraft great..thank you for your help
Thank you for this video! May I color my porcelain clay with acrylic paint?
You sure can.
Did that revised purple worm get posted?
Not yet...I need to get that up =)
