Hi mate, incase you haven't seen the latest Diggle Diaries, congratulations you've won the giveaway! If you could send me an email to digglejunction@gmail.com i'll arrange to have it sent out to you. Thanks for your support.
@@DiggleJunction weirdly a good time to do it was October when the leaf fall trains ran. DRS 37s on tap back then and of course Pacers. There was a Pendolino which terminated and was cleaned at Carlisle every night so often the cleaners would allow you to sit on board or the staff at the station would leave the waiting room open for you and a toilet. Always found the staff at Carlisle to be very accommodating
@@TheJamster2006 Well unfortunately that is not the case anymore. My dad and me decided to do an overnight at carlisle a couple of years ago. It got to 02:15 when the first southbound sleeper train departs and was promptly told to leave the station. Considering we had been doing overnights at carlisle for as long as i can remember this came as quite a shock. When i spoke to the station supervisor in his office asking if it would be ok stay on the station in the waiting room i was abruptly and rudely given a lecture on health a safety rules and regulations and staffing situation that no longer allows overnights on the station. So my dad and i had to walk round to the old Mail and parcels approach road ramp and stand in the freezing cold for 3 hours untill the station opened again at 5am. As much as i have enjoyed this video , it angers , disapoints and upsets me that all these rules and regulations and strict reasons for not letting people do overnights on carlisle can be just blatently ignored and disregarded just because 1 person wants to make a video. Its unfair , bias and unjust to rail enthusiasts everywhere who just want to enjoy their hobby but can't. The rules have to be there for everyone or not at all.
Thanks Peter, I wanted to make sure I was bringing something people hadn’t already seen from Carlisle in his videos. Even more so in part 2 heading into the wee hours.
Great video Luke . The Grangemouth Freightliner service is quite a new flow as it’s mostly DB and DRS hauled containers from there . Looking forward to seeing part two .
Luke, you are a real star. Bringing the railways to us and a 24 hour stint on a cold Carlisle station. Full marks to you and Avanti for letting you stay on the station. As always a very high quality production.
I’ve been looking forward to 24 hours in Carlisle since you first mentioned it and Wow! It didn’t disappoint. So looking forward to part 2 now. Thanks Luke for your dedication in doing these videos we appreciate all the time and effort you put into them.
Yeah with a driver in the 68 too, I wonder if they can’t operate in tandem when the 88 is electric 🤔 don’t think I’ve ever seen so many 90’s in a short period, there will be tonnes more in part 2.
A great pt1 Luke, with some different shots to Mr Gilpin, who most of us are all probably addicted to! Your pain is our gain on the 24 Hours and loving the compo clegg look at the end there 😂
Cheers Andy, I went down to the car park to try and bring some different shots. Les must have filmed every type of train through there so had to do something a little different. Was not in a good way by midnight haha.
Cheers Mark, yeah think I got a relatively quiet day to be honest but still got some interesting stuff and the beauty of being there 24 hours is even if it’s quiet you still get plenty!
@DiggleJunction i am hoping to get to Eastleigh area in April 16th-20th.maybe cardiff and also Eastleigh works if .i can get.in for 20th.how did you get information about the works.did you ring them. Would be nice.
Thanks for this Luke, I have fond memories of Carlisle station since my family moved there in 1969 and we frequently travelled by train from Citadel station. I remember watching the 'Wheeltappers' checking out the express trains when they paused at the station, testing the wheels for fractures. There was even a TV series named after some railway workers, 'Wheeltappers and Shunters social club' I think!. 😀
Another really good video Luke. I really liked it, I’ve been to Carlisle 2 times myself and managed to see lots of interesting stuff. Can’t wait for part 2 - James
You should be on far more subs than you are, great vids as always thank you. I really fancy doing a night train London to west coast Scotland. But the wife won't go, she's not into trains. All the best and thanks for the videos.
Thanks mate that means a lot. We’ve not been going too long so I’m sure we’ll get there eventually. This sleeper trains with small cabins are like a thing from a past romantic era. I’m sure you’ll win her round it’s an amazing experience.
Thanks a lot Stuart. Yeah I can see why it’s such a popular place to visit for spotting, and all things considered I think I was there on a pretty “quiet” afternoon!
Thanks for your dedication Luke, it's much appreciated. It must have been an amazing experience to be the only person there overnight, kudos to you and the station people for allowing it. Back in October 2019 my wife and I stayed at the Station Hotel, just outside the front entrance, for an organized four day rail themed break. It all looks familiar, due in part to watching Les Gilpin's channel as well. Roll on part 2! l
Thanks very much as always John, I was in the station hotel for breakfasts and the night before stay it, perfect location for falling in and out of the station. It was very eerie, utter silence when there’s no trains but was one hell of an experience. Very thankful for the following I have to allow for opportunities like that.
You have put together a excellent video together Luke, starting from the outskirts of the station, I have don’t a few late nighters at this station over the last five years but back in the 80s that’s what you call a proper all-nighter when it was one after another right up till five in the morning. Thanks for the upload Mike.
Thanks a lot mate, really appreciate that, the 24 hourers are always a tough one to do/put together. Big fan of your channel too, hopefully bump into you out and about one day 👍🏻
Luke thank you for a great part one and looking forward to watching part 2. I hope Avanti West Coast looked after you and your colleagues throughout the night. At least your videos are what you say they are rather than dozens of pendelino’s and one or two freight trains. I wish you all the success in making further videos for our enjoyment. Thank you again
Thanks a lot mate, I have to say Avanti and the overnight staff were absolutely fantastic. Even left the heating on in the waiting rooms for me! I wouldn’t want to put stuff in a video I’m not bothered about, all thriller no filler haha.
As somebody has done the overnighters on Carlisle, you have my utmost respect Luke. Sadly it's not as great as it used to be, the lack of coal traffic, now leaves mega lull's at the place. Massive credit for hanging in there. Look forward to part 2.
Cheers mate, yeah not what it used to be sadly. Especially now the expresses are just units. One good thing about the lulls on these type of vids is it at least gives me chance to rest.
@@DiggleJunction yeah I can associate with that. I must admit I've dozed off on the seats on the platform and been woken up by something coming through. The early Carlisle to Preston turn, when the 37s were running over the Cumbrian Coast, was a great one for catching up with a bit kip too, leap off at St Bees and come back on the other going to Carlisle for more kip, was always a fave of mine too. Happy Days but long nights.
Loved this Luke. Your channel is fantastic. Can't believe I've only just found it. Carlisle was one of my first "night spotting" back in the 80's with my Dad. He took me everywhere and I've such amazing memories travelling the country with him. Looking forward to part 2.
Really love your Videos, Luke. Great quality. Love the thoughtful style of the shots. No pan. Just see the train come into view through the countryside and pass one by. Great music too! Keep up the great work!
Excellent as always Luke. Have stayed in Carlisle on visits from NZ a couple of times, after doing the Cumbrian coast line and S & C - very pleasant and interesting place. Cheers from down under, Marty

LOL at 25.04 smiley face on that container. I have to say Carlisle is my absolute favorite spotting location, however as I am an unemployed layabout from Portsmouth, my opportunities to go there are almost nil. I last went in 2011. Hi luke just caught your 24 hour in Carlisle I had a brilliant week up there last and my hightlute one at around 9 at night was 4 Drs 68s on 4 flasks on new yard to sellerfield plusses empty tank train in the morning from Dalston to new yard
I wonder if it was the same night I did my reccy trip as I saw the same consist of 68’s and flasks. I gather when two need to run together they just bunch both trains together. Talk about overkill power haha.
That’s a good question, it can’t be a power issue as one will be more than enough. They used to run 86’s in pairs too so I wonder if it’s a reliability issue so there’s always one to cover if one fails.
I think it maybe the braking power, they only weigh 84 ton each and their brake force is only 40 ton each. So without brake tenders nowadays it`s the only option.
Great video. Grandad, Son and grandson all watching together!
Thanks a lot, glad you guys enjoyed it. Can’t think of anything better than 3 generations all watching together 👍🏻

I think it maybe the braking power, they only weigh 84 ton each and their brake force is only 40 ton each. So without brake tenders nowadays it`s the only option.
