Depends on the game. Back in the 90s we were already getting varied male characters too, both in gameplay and in looks. Benimaru in King of Fighters was fast and VERY gay but he was still cool, although he still looked like a normal dude. Then as fighting games evolved the variations would go further in games like Guilty Gear and the Capcom Marvel games. I would argue that male characters woul end up with more variety than the female ones since female characters would have different moves, powers and looks while male ones would have huge variations in sizes, proportions and so on. But now we have fighting games with all female casts and a lot of variety. But I agree that a badass female character is a special kind of cool. Beating your opponent with high heel kick to the mouth is very satisfying.

The game more suffers from having squeezed a clear third entry in a trilogy into its last act.

Battle Arena Toshinden had a pretty nice and varied selection of male characters.
It helps that all the characters use weapons like swords, spears, claws and whips.
I gotta disagree on the part of all brawn and heavy. Brawn, and heavy isn't boring. You ain't gonna slander my glorious pookie bear, King Zangief like that.
Depends on the game.
Back in the 90s we were already getting varied male characters too, both in gameplay and in looks. Benimaru in King of Fighters was fast and VERY gay but he was still cool, although he still looked like a normal dude. Then as fighting games evolved the variations would go further in games like Guilty Gear and the Capcom Marvel games.
I would argue that male characters woul end up with more variety than the female ones since female characters would have different moves, powers and looks while male ones would have huge variations in sizes, proportions and so on. But now we have fighting games with all female casts and a lot of variety.
But I agree that a badass female character is a special kind of cool. Beating your opponent with high heel kick to the mouth is very satisfying.
