Thank you so much for posting this video! You were a life saver. Your video is the only one I've found that shows the AO Smith and Honeywell combo that I have. I followed your instructions and everything worked perfectly and it was quick/easy. The hardest part was finding a pluming supply store that carried the replacement thermopile. ;) Thanks again.
Hi, I have linked the part I used on Amazon in the description of the video. However, you may not have exactly the same heater as me. It would be best to get the model number of the part you need and search for that exact same one you need.
Great video Chris, Ok now I remember gas furnace video they sand it and it work without replace a new one. I'm going to try tomorrow to sand thermocouple and see if it work but I do need to get a brand new one just in case.
Thanks for the video. I didn’t trust the amazon part which wasn’t exact so I went with the part matched for the model from Sears parts direct. It came in 5 days. I used the old pilot tubing because some reason when I put on new tubing it leaked gas.
What was the initial problem with the water heater? Mine does not flash any lights or anything. Do you think this is my problem. I was gonna change the whole gas valve.

I have the same type of burner assembly you have for your water heater. I have an issue removing that burner assembly after the 2 screws were removed. Seems like the assembly if catching onto something preventing it from sliding out. Any ideas?
@ChrisAsipyan I was never able to slide out the burner assembly. It was caught on something inside, I assume. Seems like the manufacturer did a terrible job assembling this water heater.
Inspect and be aware of tears in burner screens! Whirlpool/AO Smith has known issues w/ burner screen ruptures and Honeywell Gas Valve replacement (to help detect burner screen tears).

Jack Gilbert i think I'm having the same issue as u. After the pilot lights and the gas valve blinks, i turn the nob to hot. It turns on for 30 sec then die. What was ur problem?

What was your original problem? I have 5 lights flashing which means sensor failure. Not finding much info on the web about my issue. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi - I am trying to replace the thermocouple on an old gas water heater. I am having difficulty removing the burner assembly from the thermostat/gas valve fixture on the outside of the tank. I can't get the bolt on the pilot tube loose. The bolt seems to be a soft metal and now has a bunch of nicks, etc. from me trying to remove it. Questions: 1) Can this be a "left-handed thred screw" situation where you must turn the bolt CLOCKWISE to LOOSEN? 2) Should I be using a FLAT adjustable wrench instead of toothed adjustable wrench? 3) Is there anything that the pros use that would help "grab" the nut better and leave fewer nicks - something like a kitchen jar gripper comes to mind. Thanks so much for any help you can provide!!!

Such a shame that Honeywell builds such trash , Brand new unit installed and failed the first day . No voltage from Thermopile . I look at the design and it is horrible . Such a critical part of a Water heater and poorly designed . And I have talked with many guys whom have had the same problem . Naturally Mine happened the last days of December , Hard work for an old man to bring a Water heater up into his Attic and change it out . Disgusting to say the least . So now I go to Lowe's and buy a new Thermopile if they have one . The Unit would run a while and shut down , I watches as I lost voltage from the Thermopile , now zero Voltage, naturally the status light will do nothing . The igniter works fine and it did produce Hot water for an on and off period , then finally quit . Makes me so angry that America is producing such garbage by the thousands .
Man. You saying that naturally the status light will do nothing cuz the thermopile is bad!!!!! Made sense since it cant get any voltage to power the status light!!!! Now I know what to buy. Was worried it was gas valve. Thank you. That helped me mote than anything cuz my main concern was that damn light not working and was thinking it was gonna cost 150 vs the 31.99 for the thermo assembly!!🙏🙏🙏🙏
Lol. They actually have both. Thermopile is the energy source of a water heater and the thermalcouple tells the gas to keep flowing because it detects the heat source from the pilot light.

Sears wanted to charge me to have a service call to replace this valve that's still under parts warranty of 6 years .I explained to them that I am very handy and would replace it myself, they refused to send the part with out the service charge .I ordered the part paid for it and replaced it myself . So this is why Sears is going out of business they where once a great company years ago but they are to STUPID to understand what they need to do to keep there Customers Happy for return business. People DO NOT Buy Appliances from Sears .I hope Amazon gets in the Appliance game soon and put another nail in Sears coffin .Thanks for reading my review
:/
so those wires...do I rip them out ?..pry em off?...I watch these videos to get a step by step idea on "how to"...but to skip steps kind of defeats the purpose of the "how to" video....but thats just me...im a complete imbecile who needs step by step verbatim explanation...shouldn't be doing these kind of projects in the first place...lol
Paladin Garcia any tips on this? Can't get past this step. Don't wanna break the wiring apparatus.
needle nose pliers, grab top and bottom and pull straight out.
I'm a woman and it very easy for me to tell my 2 years ago they were 17 and 18 sons what to do, now they're both working full time and school, 12 hrs from now I had to go and do it.
@@thetyleraugust look on you tube for tutorial on unplugging wiring connectors. Use your head and work the problen.
@@williamkeith8944 haha this was 3 years ago. Everything worked out 💪
If anyone is freaking out about their status light. Like I was and watched 100 vids. Its the damn thermopile. Thermopile us where the status light gets it voltage from!!!! Its not hard ppl. Just turn off the gas. When u hook everything back up, dont tighten the nuts for the valves too tight cuz then u will have to get a new honeywell piece of shit gas valve!!!
Thanks for the insight!
this is called a thermopile...not the same as thermocouple
Thanks for the insight!
Some of you may have this one: www.supplyhouse.com/AO-Smith-100281571-Thermopile-Assembly
No fucking way was that nut that easier to loosen. Mine was so tight, I have to put a wrench on the left to keep the control valve module from twisting.
Good idea about using a second wrench to keep it from twisting!
Takes just minutes......
:)
Thermopyle..
Yup
This is exactly like my mine. I found the part calling the number on my water heater
We’re you successful?
Currently installing mine and afraid when the pilot flame lights up lol looks like it’s burning inside.
@@i_Gotcha_ yes.
@@maschngon I had a thermocouple issue on the old one. And I tried cleaning it with emery cloth and was able to fire the pilot and get a flame. But the flame was out of control and too big so I had to buy a new assembly of the thermocouple. So I’m hoping it’ll work. Was it as easy as it looked after watching this video?
@@i_Gotcha_ the warranty send me new everything I unscrewed it and replaced all new updated. New burner and thermocouple. And it was very Easy
Around the 4:33 mark you skipped over an entire section of replacement of the thermocouple. What good was this video? What a joke.
I think I did alright... Refer to the many people who thanked me in the comments of this video and you might answer your own question.
@@chrisbike so where did you find the part at?
I think I did alright.
