We bought a 1978 Toyota FJ40!

  • This FJ40 is a true survivor! Driven like a regular old vehicle from 1978 to the mid 90's when it was parked, destined to sit until 2021 when it was towed to my house. Since then, we have been hard at work mechanically restoring everything and documenting it all on my channel.

I had a 1981 FJ-40 in the High Desert, Victorville. Wandered all over that desert for five years. Uncle Sam relocated me to Anchorage, AK. So we drove it from there all the way up to Anchorage, stayed two years and drove it back to the east coast. Easily the most unstoppable 4X4 I've ever had the pleasure of trying to get stuck and quite possibly my most favorite vehicle in my life -- so far. I envy you.

Wow, you put in some serious miles on that FJ40! I am familiar with the High Desert/Lucerne/Big Bear areas, all great places to offroad.

Leave the old school decals. Otherwise it looks like any other Mustard yellow FJ40. I have a white 77 FJ40 with original everything and it came with black stripe decals. It's uniqueness is what I like best. Congrats 👏 on your newest family member, you're going to spend lots of great memories together.

Great for this video and what you are planning for this epic rig. I too just bought one here in Bogota. I looked for months. Found one with all the original documents when it was imported in 1981. It's an FJ43. Has the stamps like a passport in the manual from being imported, all the tools, heat and A/C plus the hard top. I got really lucky and am grateful to have picked it up. It's always been serviced at the Toyota dealer as well. Going to import it to the USA when I return in a couple of years. Just going to keep it serviced, all original and exploring South America with it. Cheers and good luck with the restoration. Subscribed!

Beautiful! Absolute score!!! So, let me preface this by saying I know these things inside out. I love your plan for it however a few things I would absolutely recommend for driveability in today's era of cars... Old Man Emu 2.5 inch suspension. Unbelievable difference. With your plan of 33x10.5 it is the perfect combo. Electric power steering. Those recently came out and will keep it stock looking without haveing the saginaw power steering box. Manually turning those wheels is a bear. Also, city racer llc LED headlights. They're a huge upgrade for night time driving and are like 140 bucks for the pair. No brainer and one of the best upgrades I did to my 76. He sells aftermarket door weatherstripping as well which is indestinguishable from the OEM stuff. I've compared them side by side. Vintage Air AC which it sounds like you're already going to do. Personally I'd keep the stripe just because cars will never have that again :) A little polish and wax and she'll be looking great!! Congrats!! :)

Thank you! We are happy to start a new chapter with it. 2.5” on 33 is definitely on the list. I did see that electric power steering which looks pretty neat. I’m definitely not looking forward to the weatherstrip replacement, but it must be done! Lol

I’m glad to see this 40 series found a good home. Keeping all original is the right thing to do. I have seen when a owner decides to make it a Chevota with a 350 in it. That just ain’t right. I learned 4 wheelin in Colorado driving my ‘76 FJ40 which I owned for a dozen years. It never let me down. I know you will get maximum enjoyment out of it. If you feel you need to sell it give me a crack at it first. Best wishes, Robert

Love the color. I owned 2 79 FJ40s back in the 80s. Drove one to HS and College before selling my last one in late 89. Brake fluid looks a little low. Really cool vehicle. Those kick vents will come in handy. Floors get really hot in these vehicles.

I've got a '75. I would change the carb to a Holley Sniper EFI. Makes it run like a much more modern engine - better start-up, power delivery and fuel economy. Also, if you plan on driving at night, swap in the widely available plug-and-play LED headlights - world of difference.

Nice truck! Unfortunately, if you're in the People's Republic of CA you're not going to be able to get it on the road. All of the smog equipment is gone, but it's a post '78 so it needs all of that crap to pass inspection.
The auxiliary gas tank is probably Man-a-fre. They've been making those forever.
Someone earlier suggested putting LED headlights in. That's a good idea but if you want to keep it stock you can go to Toyota for these modern and much brighter than stock headlights. 81110-60P70 Headlamp Assembly $43.76
