My Dad was a game Warden in Zululand where I grew up.I learnt to drive in his 1974 FJ45 in the Bush and on the beach when I was 12 years old. I've owned many 4x4's including 2 Series Landrovers and a 110 Defender. I've never had the privilege of owning one of these and that is my dream. Beautiful...
Not many of the younger generation appreciate the old FJ-40's! My first vehicle was a 1970 FJ-40 in high school 1973. I drove her hard and dated my then girlfriend, now wife, in her! Sadly did not keep her, the 40 not the wife. Fast forward to 2018, found a rust free, well maintained, 1975 FJ-40 on innerwebs one day just poking around, not looking to buy. Showed it to my wife, same wife from 1970's. She said if you want it buy it! Went to see it next day and bought it after short test drive. 12-24-18 Its almost like the 70 never left. She runs great and I wheel her all over So Cal every month or so. Sure there is stuff she cant climb like the new high horse power 40in tire, locked up rigs , but I'm pretty sure I have more fun! And the cool factor of a 46 year old rig still out there chewing up the trails is priceless!
What a great story! I’m sad I had to sell mine for sure because of all those reasons. Different time in life, I’ll have another. They’re definitely an experience to drive and one that should be thoroughly enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Sweat story mate im trying to get a diesel shorty my self from my uncle. BJ 40 or HJ they're called over here. Im 16 and hopefully will own a 40 series soon. My father use to own one him self he bought his when he was 18 and had it up to around 2010 i think, i guess thats where my love for the old landcruisers came from. Not all young people appreciate stuff these days but i can say i do
This was an awesome video. I had a ‘69 FJ40 that I bought back in 1990. I sold it in ‘98 and still regret it. I’m in the middle of restoring a ‘77 FJ40. Watching and hearing the FJ40 start up is what keeps me going. Also great to see the Idaho plates. I bought both my rigs in Idaho. Currently in SLC restoring it. Would love to see more FJ40 videos.
I had a ‘76 FJ40 for many years. Now have owned an ‘08 FJ Cruiser since I bought it new. Love it, will never sell it. Differences between the two. In the FJC I can still hear the radio at highway speed. On cold winter days I don’t have to scrape the inside of the windshield while driving. I don’t have to peel the melted floor mats off the floor boards every time I want to remove them. I have great power for passing. In my FJ40 I was able to work on it myself. The clutch really built up my left leg muscles. The fun rating to drive was off the charts. I did Black Bear Pass in it and the FJC as well as all the other passes around Ouray. Someday I hope to own another FJ40 or FJ45. Great memories of four wheelin and camping with my buddies.
Hey Stingray, I might have watched this a while back but forgot about it. I am an Indycar fan and also have a '68 FJ40 and a '79 FJ43 Soft top. Keep up the good work on the indycar circuit. One of these days the planets will align and you will get a W. be safe. RW
I've had my 71FJ40 going on 32yrs now. Traded old 73 nova and never looked back. It's been my sat. night four wheeler in mountains to my 20" wide paddle tire sand duner, to my fri night boulevard cruiser. Never let's me down and always the head turner. A bit loud with 420hp 350 and easily smokes 35" tires. Combo hot rod/street rod/show ride. Not a beauty, but a beautiful beast.
Great video. The best part was the FJ-40 in the mud; it’s natural environment. My dad had a BJ-40 when we lived in Panama and it took us a lot of neat places. My wife has a 2010 FJ and, in my opinion, it’s every bit as good as a Jeep product. Well done.
The ‘75 and ‘76 have the box-style spare carrier mounted on the driver’s side. The ‘74 had it on the passenger side. ‘77 and newer 40s have the tube style carrier mounted on the left side.
Great looking ‘74. Well maintained too. Sounds like a tractor!? Nailed it! Owned my ‘77 since ‘83 and will probably die owning it. 82,000 actual miles but it’s no carport queen. Use it to cruise the woods on our place. Have an ‘08 FJC for serious long distance road trips. When they first came out, I knew I had to have one. My FJC, owned since new, has taken me on some memorable trips to CO & WY, with more to come. Now if I can just talk my wife into letting me buy another (new) Supra.
Super cool I have a 74 myself...... love it. But I have a lift tires and a 350 in it which makes life much more enjoyable! And I'm pretty sure the spare is always on the left hand side....
Not always on the left.. on the early models its on the right from 1958-1974. However, that tire carrier (non tubular style) is usually on the right, thats why he said its on the wrong side.
I love my FJ40! I'll never get rid of it. It's far from stock though. Fuel Injected 350 with an H55F 5speed. I have a 77 I'm restoring that will be bone stock except for OME lift and electric power steering. Also, the color will be seafoam green which wasn't available in 1977. :P Great video!
I have a 78, just put a rebuilt engine in it. Reworked the transmission 2 years ago. new drive shafts.. new carb new seats. lots of new stuff. I need a new OME suspension though, my current suspension is pretty rough.
"not something you really want to take out on datenight" what??! Oh dear, the youth of today.... Take this on date night and she'll never forget it. If she bails because you drove a vintage cruiser, she's not the one. Take it from a guy that took it on date night 25 years ago and is still taking it on date night with that girl.
I’ll be honest, I had some good dates in mine as well. They’re super cool rigs and I love them. It’s just not that often “dates” are with people that love these beautiful vehicles as much as I do. It is a great filtration system; and if she’s happy to ride along in one, I’d be more inclined to go on a second date.
Hi I have the same year and color fj but mine is soft top....I have a question about the tires. You are using 33s right? Did you change the gearing or is it stock? Thanks
Grate Landcruiser’s I got my hj45 wen I was little kid I wanted one but they ware up Higth for me at that time my are so fun too drive my wife love it went we go to off roads since yo we are the only one on those road is like I say any one can have a new car now not lc thanks for the video
Hi Robb i write you from Italy... could you send me the exact code and the brand of the tires you mounted on the Toyota Land cruiser please? Many thanks. Cristian.

I’ve owned my ‘72 FJ40 since 1988 (since high school)& will always own it. Was my first vehicle too.

Yep, your wife’s a keeper😉
Neat, neat story. As others have posted, your wife is indeed a keeper!

Great FJ mate well done.... Oh and you are wrong, the tyre carrier is on the correct side🤣

Perfect comparison between the two! They both have a special place in my heart to me but for different reasons as you mentioned!

I was born in 74 so when you said over 50 years.. 🙈🙉🙊
My son just bought a 77 🙏🏼
I really like to videos like this, people that really have a passion for this vehicles
Not the smoothest ride, great understatement. Love the truck, I totally get it.
I absolutely love these videos, and there are some parts that just made me chuckle. Thumbs up!

My son is restoring a 77 too 👍🏼
Nice ride Stingray. You should come 4x4ing with me and my H2. I totally relate to the bad gas milage. Lol
Such a good build
Nice truck 👍
This thing is awesome mate! I would love a shorty one day.... we have a HJ47 Troopy on our channel if you want to see some more 40 content!
Shorties are great!

I have a 1974 FJ40 rust bucket I'm want to rebuild. I love my FJ owned it for over 20 years and needs alot of TLC
Good job👍🏻
Grate is a nice car.I have a 1976 fj 40 to.
Great video! I would rate this car 8/10!
Can you, by any chance, remember where you had sourced those Chromed Windshield hinges 5:13?
FYI: 1975 and up (ambulance door) FJ40s in the US have the tire mounted on the driver side. Not an Australian thing.
🇦🇺👍🏾 fellow FJ40 brother
That’s my position right there. “If I can’t take my dog, why would I want to go?”

Very nice 🕪
"The rooftop is solid metal" - nope, it's fibreglass!
Hi I have the same year and color fj but mine is soft top....I have a question about the tires. You are using 33s right? Did you change the gearing or is it stock? Thanks
Love it! They are 33s. It is Stock gearing.
7/10? Prepare for the Land Cruiser cult to be real upset. lol
Rough number I know, lol. These ratings are going to be tough so keep watching to see how the next vehicles we review stack up.
Grate Landcruiser’s I got my hj45 wen I was little kid I wanted one but they ware up Higth for me at that time my are so fun too drive my wife love it went we go to off roads since yo we are the only one on those road is like I say any one can have a new car now not lc thanks for the video
Rooftop is fiberglass pretty sure
Get diesel version the BJ 40, great mileage, 1L/13KM, in my country diesel fuel cheaper
how do we buy an FJ40?
Hi Robb i write you from Italy... could you send me the exact code and the brand of the tires you mounted on the Toyota Land cruiser please?
Many thanks.
Cristian.
Hello Cristian! Thanks for watching the video. The FJ40 has BF Goodrich KM3 tires on it. Great choice for a classic off-road rig.
The size is a 33”x10.5” R15 I believe.
@@stingrayrobb41 many thanks and a great "CIAO" from Italy. For any informations write me!!!!!!!
Cristian.
Imagine knowing sting ray in real life oh wait I do and I'm Jeff shawvers daughter Addison
