The "bald" area near Palmerton is due to the previous zinc refinery next to the town. The operations contaminated the soil which killed the trees/bush/grass. The zinc operation has been shut down for a couple of decades now.

The hanging basket of flowers at the shelter was such a nice touch! We just hiked a section south of there in MD/PA a few weeks ago with our dog. Was great fun.

March can't come soon enough! For a year now I watched several documentaries and quite a few TH-cam series from fellow hikers, (Hitched Hike, Surviving the Appalachian Trail, a couple others) Your's is definitely my favorite. You give a lot of details on the different landmarks and towns along the way and actually show us the scenery we're going to be experiencing. And thanks for all the mile markers, elevations, and town references! Makes it easier to look it up in the guide book lol. Great job, man! P.S. - What happened to Snorlax???

Really glad you have enjoyed my videos! Snorlax finished a few weeks after me. We split in Shanendoah NP.

Redbeard, this is amazing. I ran into you at Birch Run Shelter and let you use my phone while sectioning Southern PA. Got a text from Soggy Bottom when you reached Khatadin. Truly a fantastic trail angel. Congrats on a great thru-hike.

P.S. It's great to find this video while I think through a possible section on the North end of PA.

Glad to watch an AT video about my home state which does not bust on it. Watched one description of the trail, state by state, which left PA out entirely. What an insult. The Sus - Qua - Hanna / Duncannon are close to my home. Thanks for the video. Havent traversed the most rocky parts in the East. Nice to see them.

You are doing a very good job with video and keeping it interesting and informative
I see you are a natural good speaker as well which makes it very easy to want to watch more episodes
    Thanks so much!
I'm sure these videos will be helpful to anyone considering a thru hike or for those who may be unable
You are giving us the feeling of being there on the trail

Thanks for the video! Great stuff and very inspiring. I've hiked most of the area b/w Port Clinton and Palmerton. The stuff that killed all the foliage on Lehigh Gap East was the Zinc smelting that occurred there over decades. It's now a superfund site and the foliage is coming back!!

A little bit behind you on the trail you can see a metal "bear box" where you can store you food. There's a privy behind the shelter, too. This is a great shelter. I day hiked this area last year. Great videos, by the way. I'm watching all of them. Although I probably won't be able to hike the whole AT, I have hiked parts of it.

Dude, if you liked Rocksylvania on the AT you need to let me take you hiking up in the PA Wilds. Quehanna trail network is like an 80ish mile loop in what can be called the backcountry of northcentral PA. There are numerous trails near it too. It's gorgeous, more remote, has fishing, and the trails themselves aren't the ankle-busters that the eastern slope is (where the ATC routed their trail through PA).

Well it really depends on how many miles you are planning to try and do. I would say plan on doing around 10 miles a day and calculate it out from there. 60 miles probably about 6 days. It just depends on how many miles you do a day. Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions!

What gave you the ability to hike all these trails? Did your job allow you to?

Toast for back on trail and made it to Virginia and Snorlax finished a couple weeks after me. Toast is hitting the JMT this summer with his girlfriend so he's still hiking! Thanks for watching.

Will Wood good to hear :). another thing. How does one make time for 6 months of being off work? I really want to hike the trail some day but I don't see how to get off work for that long. Any advice?

I figured pittsburgh would be near it since it does have Appalachian culture, and it the mountians usually is the western half of the east coast.

What do you do if you have to take a dump?

    • @GuadalupePicasso
      @GuadalupePicasso 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You dog a hole that’s about 6” wide and 8” deep, squat and just go. Smarter hikers will dig near a tree, which they’ll then face and hold onto while squatting.
So long as your toilet paper isn’t colored or scented, you can bury it with your crap. It’s recommended to stir some dirt with your crap before burying it, as it’ll help it compost more easily and quickly.
