What a great talk. I have several well read copies of his survey books, and good to put a voice and face to the name!

In my opinion, Nicholson writes some of the driest dull marine books out there. Hardly any real world photos and all sorts of tedious mechanical drawings and endless lists. For instance on this video he says of the engine bearers, "they should be 1 and 3/4 times the length of the engine plus the gearbox". What? Just any boat or engine for this rule? A powerboat with 225 hp can have engine bearers only 1-3/4 times the length of the engine?? Or a 75 foot sailboat with a 50 horse engine, same thing???? I prefer Dave Gerr.

Never heard of Dave Gerr but I now know Paul Briggs is a bit of a twat.

I have all of Ian Nicolsons books, I have respected his advice and appreciated his mentoring when I was getting trained, all based on his lifetime of experience. Never heard of Dave Gerr, who is he and who are you Paul Briggs ?
