That 40 seconds is one of music's most moving moments.
I was in the audience, as the final D note pierced the heart and reverberated throughout the KKL and faded into nothingness, what followed was the most heartrendering, emotional 40 seconds of any concert I have attended. I will never forget it. RIP Maestro!
I'm confused. The title says this was in Lucerne, but in the description it says Salzburg.
@@JoEbY-X the description is incorrect. This was Lucerne Festival in 2012.
@@holydrummer Thank you!
I was there too. I share your sensation.
The audience was well trained. In the US some fool would have ruined it.
the world misses you, Maestro
True words.
The Maestro knew the Requiem was him and that it was the last time he would conduct it. He cherished this lovely and blessed moment.
You come in...
This was 1999. You sure this was the last time he conducted it?
Tears flow from the deepest Heart. Hearing the Silence that follows Music, by Abbado.
a most impressive and moving farewell to music and to the world, a unique mise en abyme of the almost dying C. Abbado after conducting Mozart's requiem
Abbado was truly moved by the sheer beauty of Mozart. Music is the voice of Heaven, when performed with sensitivity.
Grazie maestro e arrivederci.
Very respectful. What a great conductor.
Playing mozarts Requiem is emotional knowing the circumstances it was written under and it's such a powerful and sad piece of music. It's always amazed me how certain notes and chords can stir up emotions and feelings
RIP Claudio Abbado you were so great and talented.
Farewell, Maestro Abbado. Your passion, your exemplary dedication and devotion as well as your kindness will remain with us forever. Requiem Aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescat in pace. Amen.
I was in Genoa Italy, hearing Brandenburg Concertos directed by him. One of the best concert of my entire life.
RIP
In memory of Claudio Abbado.
Great!! Great!!!! This is what should happen in all live symphonic concerts... music needs silence.... ( so true violinoamore comment!! ) !!
A great light has departed. Bravo Maestro, and heartfelt thanks for being a tremendous inspiration.
Very sad moment, he was contemplating his dead and conducting his own Requiem, audience knew it. Amen.

The video description is wrong...its not 1999 and it is in lucern 100%. So the comment makes sense
I've watched this countless times and the emotion is immense.
I wholeheartedly agree!
Abbado, greatest conductor , is really his heritage as one of the best in XX century !
so powerful. what a great great musician we have lost today.
I am not sure why this brings tears to my eyes, so emotional for me. RIP Maestro
because it is true art... that's why
Thank goodness it does - it confirms our humanity!
Never get more Music in 40 sec Silent. 🙏
Riposa in pace, caro maestro.
Very touching. Even silence, in some cases, can be beautiful music.
In proposito leggere Mario Brunello....
nothing more to be said... it is sublime.

A consummate artist. He will be missed.
Absolutely stunning...
Claudio listening to silence. I miss you
Grazie infinite.
Powerfull.Abbado among the greats.
My God, he is an old man here. He looks like the aged astronaut at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey! A great conductor, wonderful interpreter of some of the greatest works in history. Thank you and RIP, Maestro.
Dear Maestro,
R. I. P.
Very touching scene. It makes me cry too
beautiful spiritual moment of silence
He is the best . . . .
Very moving.
Ciao Maestro !
Magical...
Immenso e commovente, addio Grande Maestro!
Il Maestro ora e' in Cielo.Ci rivedremo un giorno ! RIP
Adiós Maestro. Que Dios lo tenga en su gloria. Gracias por lo que nos dejó.
RIP Maestro
R.i.p. dear Claudio Abbado
RIP MAESTRO.
Claudio Abbado speaks eloquently on the subject of silence in the documentary about Luigi Nono. Ties in with this rather well.
I agree, I recommend total silence for long time
Requiem in musica aeterna magister Claudio !!!
Grazie Maestro
That is just amazing
Unfortunately I can't see or hear this Moment because of the monopolistic giant GEMA, whose heart doesn't get moved from music but only moves music away from us. I miss Maestro Abbado with all my heart and will continue to get inspiration and wisdom from his musical powers. Such an elegant and loving musicmaker...
Great that he stopped that horrible (clapping) noise that ruins every music performance. Such silence (and even longer) shall follow every great music. Clapping and shouting with the last tone means people missed the music completely and they think it is some sport or cabaret or something. They don't realise it becomes a part of that very music and spoils it completely
depends on type of music. clapping after the 1st movement (if not any movement) of concertos should definitely come back as the norm. But for sacred music, music that touches the heartstrings I have to agree with you
+violinoamore I'm not sure you apprehended the point. He was overcome by emotion, and I don't know the man, but it appears more related to his feelings about God than even the beauty of the music. His look heavenward says it all.
check out artists like deva premal & miten for more silence and depth like this :)
Amazing gift for Abbado ,
Wish to hear the full concert now :)
Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es.
[May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord, with Your saints forever: for You are faithful.]
Lyrics of the last line in the concluding communion hymn.
That was beautiful.
Dies sire dies sulla magnifico ❤❤❤
very beautiful indeed.
Addio MAESTRO!Addio ......
just two words: two masters.
addio maestro
Abbado truly honored the Requiem as if it was a real requiem.
I wonder what came into his mind during that moment of silence.
Senhor meu... emocionante!
Thank you for your beautiful comment - I too, have followed this remarkable man, though never having seen him in live performance. I've everything he's recorded because he has literally done for me exactly as you wrote, I could never have said it better. I just heard WQXR's broadcast of this year's Schubert/Bruckner concert from Lucerne, and am swept away. Abbado, now exhausted, has cancelled the Japan and London concerts, and I pray ardently thay his health and stamina return.

I really wish that I could see him live, sadly I only found out about that when it was already too late
There could be no finer tribute than this.

Well he did that because this requiem was played as the 10 year anniversary of Karajan's death. So it is a moving performance.
A honest conversation with God before coming to His Kingdom. Amen.
Five years already.
hearing the silence...
🖤
Abbado: Nobody say a word.
I suspect he was not just moved but physically as well as emotionally exhausted!
He know well that the Requiem was for him...
Anyone knows where to get the full performance? I would really love to see it.. the link in the description leads to a different Requiem performance.

@@WalterLitvin thanks! :)
I grew up on Abbado's dg recordings. One of the first cds I ever purchased as a nerdy 16 year old was his La Scala recording of the Verdi Requiem, from a small record shop in Braintree, MA that I'd heard advertised on wcrb fm Waltham, MA.
I don't need to say what Abbado felt about the silence after the last movement of the Mahler ninth. Or what sir Adrian Boult recounted of the luft pauses in the Tristan prelude of Nikisch.
Do we have a record of what Boult thought of Furtwängler's Philharmonia Tristan? Did Walter Legge ever record Boult? Why (conspicuously) not?
Sweet mother of God!
This is not Salzburg, this is the KKL and also the orchestra is the Lucerne Fes. Orchestra

LUCERNE or SALZBURG ??? And which year ?
Why did not write the name of the singers - even if I recognize Prohaska and Mingardo ?
Are you sure that you are the real MEDICI TV ?
can someone explain how the audience know when to clap?
The last
This is what my teacher always said to me: "Play the pause".

The Catholic Church has abandoned silence. Mozart would be horrified.
