Man your dad was an absolute legend. He probably would never have believed that all his filming would pay off the way it has with thousands and thousands of people appreciating it. The way he did it though its almost like he knew and it was on purpose. So crazy. Footage is gold.
For most consumers who lived during the crash, they barely or didn't even know what's going on. They even enjoyed the price of video games dropping cheaply. It was just the video game industry that had to worry. They would only become aware later of the crash when it was being discussed as part of history of video games.
Footage like this will never cease to make me ACHE to have that time back. Partially because it was my childhood, yes, but the world was simply a better place, back then.
Wow, an actual video showing a sealed retail copy of Halloween during the time it was relevant! Absolutely mind blowing. That is probably at least $10,000+ in today's money that she's holding in her hands. 😲
I really loved watching this footage. My parents were very opposed to video games for me growing up in the 2000’s, and it really caused a division between them and me. They would always tell me _”you’re wasting your life, grow up”_ and all it caused me to do was not play video games when they were home. I would only play video games when they were working at their jobs. Video games brought me such great joy in my childhood. It’s a shame my parents couldn’t share that joy with me.
Watching your mom play with the Atari was so wholesome... I was a child when I first played with the Atari in 1984. I remember the bad games lol. We would play some knock off games and get bored within minutes and just go outside to play. It's amazing how much things have changed since then... I just got through playing Horizon Zero Dawn... Astonishing how far things have come since the "bleep bleep boop boop" days. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video with us. 💫
My family bought the camcorder in '87 when I was born. My dad had an Intellivision before I was born, but no footage of that. I did recently see footage of my dad playing NES in videos of me as a baby, though. Your content is great and brings me back for sure.
While watching your video, I was thinking about my mother and the first game that she let me play that I can remember was Q-Bert for the Atari 2600 and when your cousin showed that he got this game for Christmas a shot when up and down my spine and arms. Dad wasn’t around much because he was in the Military but my mother was. She loved Q-Bert and PacMan and later on my father introduced me to PC gaming. But it all started with my mother and even though she passed away back in 2020 I still appreciate her for introducing me to video games. I still have that 2600 and her favorite game Q-Bert to this day and they both still work. So thank you for sharing this video and your family with us.
My condolences for your loss. Lost my mom in 2021, and she was like your mom, she fed my love for games. She wasn’t good at them, and we would laugh for decades talking about her struggles with Atari Mini Golf. We would literally have tears in our eyes from laughing while watching her play because she was so bad at it, but she still tried so hard. She was the type of person who laughed along with us while trying to succeed, which of course made it so much more difficult. These videos just bring back such great memories and feelings. People who bad mouth video games, and believe me, people bad mouthed them way back in the 1970s, have no idea how much fun families had with video games, and in most cases, brought families closer together.

It’s so cool that your family had the idea to record everything. Yeah the crash era was great for getting previously cost prohibitive games for cheap. I remember a haul of Atari games I got from Kay-Bee Toys and Hobby in December 1984 that consisted of Stargate, Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug and Pigs In Space with each game being $5 a pop. I couldn’t believe it since each game cost around $30 mere months before.
Your videos really help me to appreciate all the video games and video game systems my mom bought for me, even sometimes without me asking. I used to just think “Oh she’s just buying me these games because she’s always at work blah blah blah” but no she really understood that her son really liked video games and it was more than just a hobby. The wholesome love and fun your family had is amazing to see. A lot of kids are missing out in this type of childhood. I had a very similar experience we are truly blessed.
My dads mom recorded footage of him opening Halloween for Atari 2600, he was a big gamer. I watched it a long time ago but it got lost in the process of moving a few years ago yet the game was passed down to me and the crazy thing was my dad never opened it because he knew it would be worth a lot of money and it sits in a special sealed vault I have, along with other rare games that have never been opened.
I was only 4 at this time and never knew there was any kinda video game crash. We had Bally astrocade, intelivision and coleco around that time and eventually a nes. I had an uncle who passed last year and he was the guy who always filmed every Christmas and family get together, hoping my cousin eventually takes time to put all those tapes on a computer. I used to get nes games every Christmas from a few uncles back then so would be crazy to see that again. These videos really are amazing i don’t know how you haven’t ran out of them yet
Now this video is right up my alley. Another reason why your channel is one of the best on TH-cam my friend. The collaboration of your voiceover and your dad's video is both incredible and heartwarming! Thank you!
Wow this gave me so much nostalgia. This footage is priceless and you have a amazing family. Would love to see more of your aunt Michelle and hear about her experiences with video games
this episode once again is so beautiful, seeing your family, especially your parents before you were born and the environment was very gamer friendly already.
This is awesome Tyler!!! This would have been my first Christmas!! Boy do i love the 80s!!! Lol the Duran Duran record IS EPIC!!!! lol!!!! How magical! Proof of how magical and awesome 80s Christmas's really were!! They're nostalgic to think back but..your father did one better..he preserved it for all time!! What a Legend!!!!!
That’s so crazy there’s footage of someone getting Halloween as a gift. I have the manual and cartridge with the label where they wrote halloween in marker but I’m missing the box. That thing goes for thousands of dollars. I hope she still has it and all those games
this is beautiful 1980's gold, I was a younger teen then and I cherish these years myself. the Atari VCS is my childhood along with original Star Wars action figures , I was born in the early early 70's so I absolutely remember this incredible era, awesome work my man!
This is great. I have seen that footage of someone playing Donkey Kong inside a Sears before. You are unlikely to find footage of people experiencing the Atari VCS console when it was current simply because consumer video cameras didn’t exist until the tail end of the console’s life before the crash.
What a treasure it must be to have all of this video footage of your family from before you were born and your entire childhood! Not to mention having just about the entire history of video games documented in real time….
That is seriously mind-blowing footage, your family is awesome. Hearing all about Sears and their legendary catalog brought it back for me. We used to have a Sears at my local Pheasant Lane Mall as one of the anchor stores. It's sadly since been long shut down and still remains vacant. I have fond memories of using their layaway program to get my first HDTV, a 40" Sony Bravia that kicked ass. I sadly lost that one in a housefire after having it for 6 years. Oh man, the day I paid it off, I said to my best friend, "Pinch me dude, I must be dreaming!" he responded, "It's not a dream, it's real. In fact, here." and he jokingly did pinch me, I was like, "Ow, okay dude, it's real!" and shared a good laugh with him. He had just purchased a 32" Bravia a couple weeks prior and I helped him set it up with his PS3 and 360, so that gave me much needed experience. Some time later, I bought another HDTV from Sears for some good friends of mine in Ohio who had recently got married. They were blown away that I did that for them. They still have it 14 years later and use it even now. Just shows how impactful the loss of Sears was for me and everyone who supported them was. I got so many wonderful things that would've been unobtainable otherwise thanks to layaway at Sears, to say I miss their presence would be a massive understatement. Same with Toys R' Us at its peak. Amazing footage dude, seriously, your dad captured some truly magical moments in your lives with that camera. Bless him and thank you for uploading this for all to enjoy.
Bless the man with the camera. What a legend. I was just having a conversation about how I don't even have a single photo of me as a child gaming. Makes me so sad.
This is one of your best videos for the simple fact that you get to see people in your life from before you were born; talking, moving around, dressed differently, with bigger hair. This made me wonder if your dad ever filmed your grandpa working on comics or did a video showcasing his art or anything like that. If so, it could be an idea for a future video, even if it's not retro gaming related.
Awesome you have all this footage of your childhood(and before). 90% of my childhood is just memories, 9% photos, 1% video. My family was pretty bad at documenting our lives.
It's absolutely incredible you have footage of your families interactions before you were even born. How many can say that? Your dad filmed like he was making a documentary. Really awesome stuff. I was born in 82. Can't believe how time has gone.
Watching your dad spread the love of gaming made me realize that thats me in my family lol. I was kinda feeling bad about it but this makes me feel better.
That Halloween game was one of the best games I ever bought from a old-school bus at a flea market. He had all of those behind the curtain games that you couldn’t get anywhere else. It was actually pretty good for what it was.
I love these videos, made with such love and care. They bring back so many great memories. I’m a bit older than you, probably 6 or 7 years younger than your parents. My first video game Christmas was 1975 or 1976, when I would’ve been 13 or 14, I received Pong. We played that for hours and hours. I had played arcade games for years prior, so I had already become pretty good. Then in 1977, my parents told me about the Atari 2600, and how you can switch games by switching out cartridges. What a mind boggling concept ! We couldn’t afford it just then because we were going through financial difficulties. But a year later, it was under our Christmas tree. I can’t tell you how many Atari 2600 cartridges we wound up with, literally over 100. That Atari 2600 Pinball game your future mom was playing, I loved that game, my parents literally had to shut off the 2600 if we had to go somewhere and I was playing that game, I must admit, it was one of the games I could play for hours because I was pretty good at it. Your aunt getting Trick Shot for Christmas brought back some memories, I had totally forgotten about that game. I had so much fun with it, and if I remember correctly, it was a weird shaped metallic colored cartridge. I got the Atari 5200 for Christmas of 1982, and enjoyed it a lot, but at age 20, out of high school, I had other interests as 20 year old males tend to have. I still played games, but not as often. I remember still buying games and reading video game magazines as the crash of 1983 was happening. It wasn’t until 1987 when my co worker told me about Mike Tyson’s Punchout, that I became interested in consoles again. I was still playing games in arcades, and loved Punchout, so the idea of playing it at home brought me back to the world of consoles. My Mom and Dad, they fed and encouraged my video game addiction as a teenager, so I had many Christmases like your wonderful videos. My mom was still buying me video games for Christmas until her last Christmas in 2020, and my Dad, his last console was the Xbox 360. So he loved video games as well, though at age 83, he no longer plays them. Though I have fond memories of playing those Atari 2600 games with him when I was a teenager. Thanks for posting these videos, I’m sure they bring tears of joy to thousands of people who were Atari junkies.
Thank you for sharing your family memories. Watching this video brought me back to a time when things seemed so much easier. I was born in 1974 so Christmas in the 80s was something magical!
It's awesome to have a record of your family like this! Sometimes I would just like to be a fly on the wall during my younger days to see things playing out with my current understanding. And to see the younger versions of my own parents. Great video! Atari was awesome!
This had to be such a surreal time; the console division of Atari desperately trying to get out of their tailspin (too late to prevent Warner Communications from selling them), retailers furious at being overloaded with cartridges to the point of putting everything on discount to get space, and gamers in North America having a pretty fun time getting all sorts of games for cheap. That was the telling contrast of this period; game companies, retailers, & investors were all suffering the effects of the industry collapsing while actual fans of games had so many options because so many were on clearance. It's no wonder why so many younger gamers don't specifically recall a crash because at the time you could play so many titles; you just couldn't make real money on them.
Thank you so much for sharing these. It's a time capsule from another era, an era before video games really took off. It's so cool how much your dad and aunt were trailblazers when it comes to video games.
Incredible. Just absolutely incredible to have these moments captured forever. Brought a few tears to my eyes. Me and you are the same age. November 1986. I know you’re like April or may or something. Same upbringing. Video games and toys. My dad always had the camera too. But I don’t know of any footage that existed before me. You are blessed. Your dad was a monster! (In a good way of course) much love Tyler.
This video was beautiful! Your Father was ahead of his time with recording home videos and I appreciate that he had the foresight to record so much! He cracks me up whenever he is on video! I have done the same for my family for close to 15 years. Your Aunt got some amazing games in '83 and that is so awesome she got such a rare game and it was captured on video!!! Thank you for sharing Tyler!
Absolutely unbelievable footage. Lots of people had video cameras in the 90s, but man, seeing this home footage from the 80s is something else. Thank you for sharing, Tyler!
I can relate so much to this video! My brother and I received an ungodly amount of Atari games during the Christmas of 83 and 84. My brother and I had no idea there was a video game crash. Fast forward to 2023. I ended up with all of our old Atari games. My wife bought me an Atari 2600+ for my birthday. It's been a blast playing all the old games again!
Hands down your family Is legendary when It comes to games, experiencing the crash of 1983 and the rebirth of 1984, that is just quite a story to capture on video and your videos reminded me of my first Christmas parties I attended with my family members, back when we reunited often in our grandmas House, those were the times when my cousins brought their N64 and introduced me to the world of console gaming.
I remember when i was just a young guy, my dad introduced me to his Intellivision. It was so awesome, something ive never seen before, it was amazing to me. I used to love playing Downhill Skiing and Dungeons and Dragons. Then in the late 80s, early 90s, a brand new system came into our household, the Nintendo!! The coolest system ever!! I still remember playing super mario before and after school, i would race home just so i could play it. A couple years passed by, Super Mario 2 and 3 had come along, i absolutely loved those games. Then one xmas morning, i unwrapped what would be the most amazing console id ever seen, the Sega Genesis!! To this day i still remember all of those memories and hold them very close to my heart. I wish i had some footage but all i have now is memories. Such a wonderful thing to be able to look back and watch all these amazing times full of love and family enjoying Xmas!!
Been watching your videos for years! It feels like we are part of your family. it is so cool to see your aunt and uncle and even your mom and dad so young!
Thanks for this. It’s almost foreign now to see individuals who are not glued to their phones. Like at 2:50… if this scene was recorded today, the girl on the couch would most certainly be looking down at her phone. I’m glad I’m old enough to remember a time before technology ruined everything.
such great memories! I have some vague memories of the atari stuff, though I wasn't born til 79 so didn't have much. but I still appreciate this look at the post-crash era and y'all still getting games!
Wow I'm completely mind blown how amazing your new video is! I can't believe how far back the footage goes, this is so special to even still exist. This really is the beginning of videogames other than maybe the Magnavox Odyssey.
It's really pleasant to watch and relive these happy emotions with your family Tyler! I wish my family had a camera in late 80s-early 90s. Thank you for uploading these videos!
As someone who was a teenager at this time and into the gaming scene, i can tell you that nobody noticed any video game crash at the time. It wasn't the big thing people today make it sound like. I had the Atari and then Colecovision in 1983-84, then around 1987-88 got the Nintendo NES. The entire time spending every weekend in gamerooms. Its not as if video games went away and nobody was playing them anymore.
I loved Atari then, and still play it at times today. I don't have my original 2600 system anymore, but I managed to find another one in decent condition. I have a pretty good game collection, too, even ones I didn't own then. Thanks for the video, so much nostalgia here. Made me wish I was back in those days again.
What an amazing glimpse of the past, seeing personal footage of people enjoying Atari in the early 80s. Gaming was so huge then and your family looks as excited playing this new technology as families that played the Wii for the first time. Incredible how much Atari could screw it all up...
The footage you have is priceless, I was born in 1982 and my first system I had was nintendo I wish i had footage of that. Im in the process of transferring family footage to digital.
Really cool video footage! Thanks for sharing it. In 1983 i was 13. My mother was NOT interested in video games even though i got a Sears Atari in 1979. She didnt mind if i played it but she didnt want to. Very awesome video

it's so touching how you love your dad and family. it makes me think of my family and the memories i'll never forget!
[15:54] That Nintendo package under the tree! Has to be one memory that many of us your viewers find very nostalgic!!! 🙂
miss these times man ., thanks amigo for sharing these happy moments in your life … coolest dad ever 😎
this episode once again is so beautiful, seeing your family, especially your parents before you were born and the environment was very gamer friendly already.
Your videos make me cry man..so good
That’s so crazy there’s footage of someone getting Halloween as a gift.
Watching these home movies like this make me feel like your family is my family too. Great content Tyler ❤
Sharing your life is one of the most precious things in life. Even more precious than that copy of 2600's Halloween.
The black MGM shirt your dad wears is absolute fire my guy. Along with the mullet. Freaking rockstar man.
I love that shirt. Wish I had it!
Thank you for sharing these awesome memories with us, and happy Valentines Day to you and your family
Opening the Dustbuster made me think of Back to the future 2
I was wondering if you would ever have your aunt Michelle on the channel and talk about some of the videos that she's in
Maybe someday!
Awesome you have all this footage of your childhood(and before). 90% of my childhood is just memories, 9% photos, 1% video. My family was pretty bad at documenting our lives.
Another great video Tyler.
Thank you for making these and letting us all into your awesome retro life.
It's absolutely incredible you have footage of your families interactions before you were even born. How many can say that? Your dad filmed like he was making a documentary. Really awesome stuff.
I was born in 82. Can't believe how time has gone.
I'm blown away, man , whenever I think I may have seen the most surprising vids you have, you pull something like this out of your hat. So awesome
They got a 9.2 Halloween Atari game on eBay for like 75k lol my god.. your aunt Michelle is the best. They are the true OG’s of gaming.
Watching your dad spread the love of gaming made me realize that thats me in my family lol. I was kinda feeling bad about it but this makes me feel better.
How cool to have video footage of your parents so young at Christmas.
I thought I was just watching this channel for video game content. Turns out I'm totally invested in your family!
Man it’s always a good day when I see an upload from MRL!
Hands down, one of your best videos Tyler 💜
Thank you for sharing your family memories. Watching this video brought me back to a time when things seemed so much easier. I was born in 1974 so Christmas in the 80s was something magical!
I've watched all your videos and I got choked up seeing your mom and dad so young. That video is an absolute treasure. Thanks for sharing.
I love how present people are back then. No phones to distract. Everyone was in the moment.
You make comments like this on so many of his videos. It’s not 1983 anymore, deal with it.
There’s literally a huge camera on a tripod with a studio light filming this and bros talking about phones
By the end of this video, I had tears in my eyes. This channel is so amazing. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us in your videos.
Thanks man! Welcome to the family 😉
love this. i was able to take my older cousin to see Duran Duran last summer. that memory will last forever.
Thanks for this. It’s almost foreign now to see individuals who are not glued to their phones. Like at 2:50… if this scene was recorded today, the girl on the couch would most certainly be looking down at her phone. I’m glad I’m old enough to remember a time before technology ruined everything.
My family loves your videos! It hits the nostalgia and the feels for family all at once. Keep it up, Tyler!!
I was born in 77 this video gave me chills
Everybody keep your conversations down. Respect + never fails to impress.
Dude that was really cool seeing your family big into gamingnin the 80s. Its insane seeing that Halloween footage. Great video, Tyler.
such great memories!
So moving, man you are making such fun videos! Your dad is a great cameraman too! Thanks to him!
THE HALLOWEEN GAME...OMG...YOU WIN BRO...🔥
It’s such a gift that your dad recorded these.
Really cool video footage! Thanks for sharing it. In 1983 i was 13. My mother was NOT interested in video games even though i got a Sears Atari in 1979. She didnt mind if i played it but she didnt want to. Very awesome video
It's pure magic every time man. In my home movies I have footage of my brother getting Mario Brothers 3
