To the 32X's credit, it did have 3X more CPU speed as the Genesis and nearly double of the Sega CD at 23 MHz. It did have 32K on-screen colors vs. the other two's 64 from a 512 palette. I never played a 32X game until recently on my modded Vita. It's called Tempo. The sequel, Super Tempo, came out on Saturn and I hear it's rare and expensive to get a physical copy. The colors from Tempo looks amazing and the file is still small unlike from a CD-ROM. Tempo to 32X is like Rayman to the Jaguar. It really showcases their color palette and amazing 2D capabilities if pushed for it. I think Jag, 3DO, and 32X would've been decent systems if they had third-party support. Any system can be good as long as they have good library of games. Perhaps 32X and Jaguar are OVERHATED? The 32X was basically Super Nintendo's FX chip games except it happened to be a peripheral. If 32X got the support, I think it could've been decent. But timing was awful since Saturn was coming soon. Didn't make sense getting the 32X or the Sega CD.
@@Dec4AllTimeAlways did it really have 32,000 colors on screen, or to chose from? I guess kolobri or tempo has most colors on screen. Doesn't tempo have great voice quality music quality, 🤔 why he didn't mention that in video?
I grew up in a household of adult gamers who owned a computer/electronics repair shop and also knew all the pawn shop owners so we always had pretty much everything. Always had multiple consoles, handhelds, a computer in every room, stacks of games for all of them... Also had a second phone line specifically for 24/7 internet. Even to this day buying used makes so much more sense. You get the same exact things as people who buy new but for MUCH cheaper so you can get 20 times as much....
Your dad sounded like a really great guy who just wanted the best for himself and his family and it is a real shame the world lost such a great guy so soon.
Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed this one - it was super fun recalling this time Dad got so mad at Sega. As a major Sega consumer, he was slightly wounded by the 32X, but we carried on and still bought a Sega Saturn. Did Sega hurt their brand irrevocably with the 32X? Let me know your thoughts below. Thanks guys!
Hi Tyler, in 1994 I was 12 years old and I liked Sega more than Nintendo because I felt more adult/older when playing Genesis Games! I also loved sports games a lot and the Genesis was THE best system for sports games. My dad bought me Fifa Soccer, PGA Tour Golf, Italia 90s World Cup, NHL'94 and many other games. He bought me everything, but never played with me, only 1 night a year on occasion. Your dad was the man, he was the dream dad of any kid back then. I mean which kid do NOT love video games? I know not a single one!
Your dad was such a bastion of enthusiasm and excitement that is genuinely sad to see him disappointed. It is weird that the 32X came after the Sega CD because at the time, you really were not going to get CD quality audio on a cartridge. It was always doomed to be a backward step in that department
Why, jaguar had better than CD quality on cart with super bike (48000khz). To get CD sound, pair with Sega cd = 32xCD games. 32x was awesome stop gap. Better than svp. 3d Virtua fighter virtua racing doom star wars arcade metal head plus 2d greats like tempo kolibri so much color and better bitrate 32x sound.
The 32X does have its own sound chip that's above SNES in quality. But it was combined with the Genesis chip, often making the Genesis do the music while the 32X did the sound effects. Doom being an example. The sound effects are great, way better than SNES but it's music is obviously not up to 32 bit standards. AfterBurner and Space Harrier sound identical to the arcade which is far beyond what Genesis sound can do, but those games were already oldies. NBA JAM TE Has epic in between quarter and half time jams all 32X, but the gameplay again 32X only does sound effects while Genesis does the music. There's more examples too but I make my point. 32X wasn't helpless with sound but clearly could have used CD for some help.
I'm 62 and have been a launch day gamer since 1978 so yes purchased the 32X day one and had similar feelings to your dad also like your dad I was disappointed at the short life and small library of the 32X.
32x should've never existed at all then the saturn wouldn't have done so bad. There was absolutely no reason for the 32x, the games even costed $20 more than saturn games.....
I’m about to turn 61 in October, so I have a similar history. Got the original Pong console for Christmas 1976 I believe, and got my Atari 2600 two years later I believe. My grades definitely suffered due to video games lol. There were two eras where I stopped playing video games, after the video game crash of 1983, I was 21 and other things became a priority. And then in my early 50’s, I kinda stopped playing video games for a few years. Then I got a Nintendo Switch in 2017 (I was 55), and now also have a Steam Deck. But I truly miss Sega making consoles, warts and all. The Genesis and the Dreamcast are 2 of my top 5 favorite consoles ever. This channel is such a blessing, this family was/ is such a great video gaming family, and I treasure these videos.
He seemed pretty smart as that was a plausible explanation. I have an A/V receiver that works fine but this one time the clock fell out of sync with the digital audio sample rate and made everyone sound like jarbled robots. The audio was still intelligible but it just sounded like trash. A good ol' turn off and on again fixed it.
No he kinda nailed it. Sega of Japan was already working on the Sega Saturn and tasked USA with protoyping a 32-bit add on. They didn't tell them they had no plans of sticking with whatever they came up with and would be releasing the Saturn not long after the 32X was ready to be released. Sega of America kind of had to just release it and the few games and ports it had knowing it was about to be buried by its own company.
Subscribed! The 90's/Early 2000's were a bittersweet time for me. As much as I enjoyed the pop culture and the SNES, Sony PlayStation, even Sega; it was somewhat of an explosive household. I would practically hold my breath when my dad would enter the room. My dad and I weren't incredibly close. For that reason I was always closer to my mom. I'm thirty now, and I have forgiven him after all these years. I also have two children of my own, and seeing how on any given day they cling to either me or their mom, I definitely feel like I'm going the right direction. I can't put into words how much it meant to me to find your video. Thank you for doing what you do.
My dad loves video games and I asked for a 32X for Christmas in 1994. He was a PC gamer and I had been a Sega kid for about 3 years, having had both a Genesis and Sega CD. He was fairly experienced with computers and technology, but he became so frustrated while trying to connect the 32X to the Genesis that he was convinced it was missing some parts. He said "Look, I think this thing is missing a cable and we can't connect it. Screw Sega. What else do you want?" and I sheepishly said "Uh, a 3DO would be cool." And to my surprise, he said "OK sure." So we returned the 32X and he paid the difference for a 3DO, which was $399 at the time. So my experience with the 32X was so bad that I never even got to play mine. And you have to imagine there were plenty of other kids out there with similar stories of frustrated parents on Christmas morning. In retrospect, I'm glad I got a 3DO instead because I have so many great memories with nearly a dozen classic games for that console, which in late 1994 and early 1995 truly felt next gen. And after the 3DO, like many people, we got a Playstation. Great video! All the old camcorder footage really made the story come to life. Your dad seems like a cool guy.
@@NintenDan.2005 Somehow I was! I say that because we were NOT a wealthy family. One of my best friends growing up laughed because we "have sheets for closet doors but always have the coolest electronics." I was fortunate to have parents who prioritized their children's Christmas wish lists over home repairs.
@@ultimateman55 My dad usually cheaped out on stuff too but surprisingly our first computer in 1998 was a top of the line Sony VAIO. I remember telling some kids at school about it and they thought I was lying as the Sony's were supposedly quite a bit more costly than regular computers due to having DVD drives, various multimedia inputs/outputs, and the best graphics and sound chips.
I had 3D0 as well, and it was because the guy at the Video Game store was cool, so he suckered my parents in. Personally, because ai had it then when it was truly impressive hardware and software, I am fond of my time as that kid who had the thing nobody had. In retrospect, the NEOGEO still would have been a better system, but who could tell in the video game heydays of the 90's?
@@rubyjones7151 Are you sure? I don't think too many companies recorded phone calls back then. Heck, even Squaresoft, the developers of some of the highest selling games in the world didn't even back up their game files. People used to just live in the moment and didn't overly rely on technology until the 2000's or so.
@@rubyjones7151HDD? In 94-95'? I'd think a loop play machine would be where it was recorded, as they kept tape, literal tape, at that time for that. Digital phone storage was not really a thing yet.
As a kid, I never got the 32X because I could tell it was a gimmick for the most part. But when the Dreamcast came out, I wasn't at all disappointed. It's a shame Sony destroyed it with better titles, but I'll forever love Sega for the happiness it brought me. And I still play Shenmue to this day!!
There are no words to describe what a fantastic treasure of videos your father has created. Absolutely everyone who grew up in "the time" will be pining for those good old days. Your dad will live on forever in the collective memory!
I really can't get enough of your channel. It mixes nostalgia with amazing commentary / storytelling, but also your current personality shines through in ways i feel like we know each other. Thank you for your amazing videos and sharing these memories with us. Some of us didnt have them. ❤
I remember one of my neighborhood friends got the console during Christmas of 94. We loved the NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat 2 ports. However, we were just as confused as others knowing the Saturn was close to release. Most of the kids in our neighborhood were Genesis owners, but after the 32X disaster we lost faith in Sega, and moved on to the PlayStation
I got mine for $30 when they liquidated them, was quite happy with it for that price! :). Mine had the video noise issue that I could never get rid of.
I found your show like a week ago, and as a father to a toddler, filming everything. This completes me; so moved by you and your fathers memories together. One of my top channels for sure.
Just now in 2023, I’m discovering 32x through emulation. I know emulators can be frowned upon but it’s honestly the easiest way to explore all these great games i was always curious about as a kid. As always, great stuff Tyler!
Man. Your Dad was a God among all your fans. I wish he was around for a AMA. Such a legend dude. And it's so incredible you have all these amazing memories and footage. I love this channel. And I his legacy is incredible. 🙏
your channel is in fact the most important when it comes to retro gaming channels!! Its great for those who arent into collecting but hold memories. Its good for resellers just to better understand the connection between games and their buyers.. The list goes on and on! Great job on the video! my friend had a 32 x but we never did
We had Genesis model 1, Saturn, Game gear, and Dreamcast. My favorite memories were from the Saturn console. My dad owned a home theater company so we had a 60 inch TV and 5.1 surround sound. Being a kid and shooting bad guys in Virtua Cop 2 or racing Daytona with the steering wheel on a big screen was amazing.
Just met Tyler at LI Retro and man it was a pleasure! Thank you for having the last 3x shirt in my size lol!! It was an honor sir and I thank you again for sharing these stories. Such treasures.
I think why the audio on the 32X sounds so last gen is because the system doesn't really have a dedicated sound chip. It had what was called PWM, only adding 2 extra voice channels. So every 32X game was basically using the mega drives (or genesis) YM2612 chip to produce the sounds and music. Which is likely why the star wars theme sounded so bad
It's not talked about or was even used much (if at all). The 32x did have what was called Q sound. It took audio from the Gen and created a "haas effect" resulting in a wider sound. There was added Dac players (sampling) Very close to an arcade machine at the time. Was also not used much because it was too complicated for developers to deal with. Edit= Still not saying it would have sounded better then Cd quality sounds that the Sega CD used (half the time). Multiple Dac samples playing at the same time is not a good sound lol
Just stumbled on your channel... For a kid who grew up with a single mom, and didn't know who his dad was, watching this just makes me feel good on all levels.... Much Love to you, and your pops...
Always a good day when Tyler post a video! Also, I sent you some pictures in your email of us and some old pictures of me gaming! Videos coming soon for the new series! Thanks Tyler!!
Never had the 32X nor the Sega CD, but I do believe that the 32X should have never been a thing in the first place. The Sega Saturn was just around the corner and that was already a 32 bit console. I know it has a lot to do with Sega of America and Sega of Japan not getting along with each other, but had they put their differences aside, Sega would still be making consoles today. Great video as always Tyler.
@@GardevoirBoy ??? When Nintendo released the Famicom, Sega was already a giant in the arcade industry, they were making videogames way before Nintendo.
@@GardevoirBoy So, do you think it would be a better world without competition between companies? Don't you think you have more innovation and better quality in the end, when companies have to compete to deliver a product?
This channel is so great. Best part is when you eventually run out of old footage to share, you can start using user submitting retro vids and stories.
I was like your Dad a massive Sega fan boy. I was working at Electronics Boutique here in the UK when the 32x released. I set it up and knew Sega had messed up. It was terrible but it did grow on me.
I was the only 1 of my friends that owned a Sega CD.. And I had some fun with it.. Ground Zero Texas, Prize Fighter, Sonic CD.. But my system had a ton of glitches and as we know in general the game library was very poor.. I never bought the 32X by then the word was out that Sony was putting together a kick ass next gen CD based console.. Buying the PS1 in 1995 was video game heaven for me and my best friend..
I remember having no high expectations. Me and my friend who used to own one, saw it as an add on. Not the same feeling when he got the Saturn. As soon he got the Saturn we forgot about the 32X. That was a mistake by Sega. The best thing about it were the few arcade ports it got…
Fun video! Those few shots of your dad outside grabbing his elbow was used perfectly to show his pain for the console. But I am curious to what happened to his elbow? Heh
My Stepfather was a SEGA guy. So, by proxy, so was I. We had every Sega Product(Including the Master System Converter and some games) but we stayed away from the 32X. If they didn't announce the Saturn so close we might have gotten duped into a 32x lol. I actually don't regret missing out on it.
I had the Sega tower. Genesis, Genesis CD, and the 32X. I got it for Xmas 1994. I got Doom 32X with it. I had heard so much about Doom from PC gamers, and how it was like gaming crack. That was the ONLY 32X game I ever had. I will say, I became a HUGE Doom fan afterwards. It was indeed gaming crack. I have to say, I believe Sega changed the Doom soundtrack, but sound wise, it didn’t seem to have any issues. Music, gun sounds, zombie sounds, didn’t have any issues. Then again, it was almost 30 years ago, maybe I’m not remembering correctly. But sound issues don’t ring a bell on my 32X. It was the only game I owned though.
Wow - I legit had nearly this same experience with the 32X and my Dad. From the frustration of those stupid little electromagnetic shields to the quality of the Star Wars game. I remember getting both Star Wars and Virtua Racing at the jump. I thought they were fun, but the quality jump wasn’t what I expected. Doom did blow my mind, though. I thought it was crazy that I could play that on a console. But at the end of the day, I only ever had those 3 games and ditched it very quickly once the Saturn came out. I’m pretty sure I traded in all of my Genesis and 32X stuff to Funcoland, haha. Wish I still had it!
I never had the privilege to get any cool systems as my parents were not very supportive of me playing games as a child. But I've always been a Super Nintendo fan versus a Sega.
I bought the 32X with money that I saved from working in my school cafeteria at a rate of about $26/week. After that, I never bought another Sega system and made sure to prioritize SNES purchases over Sega; buying used or bargain bin Sega games after that.
I didnt get the 32x at launch but I did get it on clearance for $40 at Toys r us. It was the fist way I experienced Doom so to me I have some great memories of it. I did buy the Saturn at launch though. $400 was a lot of money back in 95, my rent was only $395 a month for my 1 bedroom apartment lol.
Hell hath no fury like an angry, Sega-loving dad done wrong!🤣 It's cool that you have old footage of your father & his gaming passion. It must really take you back to fun, innocent times.
Another excellent vid, Tyler. I was a Nintendo fanboy throughout my childhood but my older brother bought a Genesis in '93 so playing Sonic 2 helped break down the walls of my bias a fair bit. In late '94 I was hopelessly in love with Killer Instinct and super-hyped for the "Ultra 64" 's eventual launch so I foolishly looked past all of its competitors, even the PS. I used to get Electronic Gaming Monthly and Gamepro almost every month so I read about just about everything going on with it as it happened, pre-launch and post. Even though I remember EGM barely going past lukewarm about Cosmic Carnage, I still wanted to play it but $150+tax to a 13 year old with a $5 allowance was never gonna happen. I'd have to use a Christmas present on it or hope my brother would buy it (before even factoring in the cost of a game). Then, thanks to its microscopic lifespan, the decision was made for me since before I could even get excited enough to consider buying it, it was gone. Huge bullet dodged since my life was fighting games and Mario style platformers at that time.
I did buy the console originally when the price dropped to around $20. I did end up returning it due to a high pitched sound that the console produced. I was able to repurchase a few units years later before the crazy price hike. I do enjoy playing Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Racer Deluxe, Knuckles Chaotix, and Mortal Kombat II on my 32X from time to time.
December 1994, I was playing urban strike on my megadrive, I loved my megadrive and always thought the 32x looked like a joke, I can understand your father's disappointment, I remember being so let down by urban strike I felt it to be not as good as jungle or desert strike, but my mother bought it for me and I remember her looking at me playing it, I didn't have the heart to tell her its a heap of crap, so I pretended I loved it.
Hi Tyler! Your dad expected quality, and I admire that. He WANTED the console to be great because he loved video games. Disappointment is much worse than anger in this case.
That Clip at 12:5613:22- just reminds me of the 90s so much lol All your buddies coming over when a new game came out staying up late taking turns trying to beat it. Trading games or renting them from the movie store trying to beat them in 3 days if there new 7 days if there old :D
I never bought a 32X but I remember thinking it improved the graphics when I saw games playing in the store. Thing is I thought the Super Nintendo was already an improvement over the Megadrive, so I never bothered to get it and waited for the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64.
I remember getting my 32X at a yard sale with a copy of Doom, and couldn't get the thing to work no matter what I did. (ended up being a bad cable between the genesis and 32x). I eventually got a full bundle with a Genesis, CD, and 32X in the early 2000s and had everything working.
I got a 32x in Christmas 94. I was 12, and I returned it after I couldn't hook it up properly. Unfortunately there was not a father figure around to get it sorted out for me. I returned the 32x, Virtua Racing, and Knuckles Chaotix and got some Genesis and Super Nintendo games instead.
@@MyRetroLife I did get one a couple years later at 17 years old. Some guy was selling one with 18 games, which was most if not all of the cartridge library. I was smart enough to hook it up by this point and there were a few titles I really enjoyed. My favorite was Space Harrier. OpenLara on the 32x really makes me wonder what this this was really capable of...
@@MyRetroLifeMy cousin got 32X with MKII in November 1994. He couldn’t get the unit to work. It was a complete bust. 32X was a huge misfire by SEGA. It should have never been created.
Funny story: When Mortal Kombat 3 came out, I BEGGED my mom to buy me it because I loved the first 2 so much. So she did. It was an early Christmas present. But I remember as soon as I got it on launch day, I called my buddy up and told him and he came over right away. We popped it in with excitement and while it was different from the first two games, I still really liked it. But my buddy made it his mission to go out of his way saying it sucked, there was no Scorpion or Rayden, the graphics looked more cartoony, the finishers sucked, it was a waste of money, sucks to be you bro, etc. etc. lol. Fast forward to when the 32x came out and he got it launch day and called me over. Boy did that rant of his come back to bite him in the butt because I came fully loaded lmao.
I got one back in 2016 and I love it. I think had it been given more time we would have seen some amazing games. I feel like a lot of SEGA’s stuff was ahead of it’s time so it couldn’t find the right audience. I think Virtua Racing Deluxe is my favorite game for the system.
This format of video is awesome! We really need more nostalgic videos like this. I went through situations like this as a child but sadly I don't have the documentation on video anymore
Hearing this story could not help but to wonder if they could have streamed the audio from the cd, for those who owned it. Maybe shipping an ultimate version with a cartridge and cd. For the ultimate fans like your dad.
This is a Great Video. A perfect analogy of how many of us felt about the 32x way back then. The Star Wars audio segment is absolutely the perfect way to describe it. Good Work.
Sega really shot themselves in the foot with the 32x. I never had one back then in 94 or 95, but I did get my hands on a complete in box one maybe 10-12 years ago. I think I've hooked it up like 2 or 3 times period, it's just such a pain in the ass. Though I also have this rare Sega power strip that worked perfectly for the three ac adapters. Anyway I think I just have SW Arcade, Doom, and some motocross game for it, 32x games never come up in the wild.
My Cousin got in when it launched November 1994. And it didn’t even work. 32X/MARS was a complete misfire. SEGA of Japan should have vetoed its Greenlight.
Where they shot themselves in the foot was abandoning it so soon. It actually had strong sales initially which irritated SOJ so they then knew they had to kill it. I think they should have doubled down on it as a budget console and scrapped the Saturn since it was a poor competitor to PlayStation and doomed to fail. They could have inked out a few more years extending the Genesis lifespan and then launched with something really great.
@@mikeg2491 Sega should have invested in their Neptune concept instead of scrapping it. That'd be the proper way to double down on the two tier console strategy. Forget the 32x and Model 3 entirely, end Sega CD Model 2 production. R&D the Genesis/CD/32X chips onto one or two boards in one unit. The Saturn had issues, not just with hardware choice or development but also with marketing. The problem comes from a few different directions, but the industry's polygon obsession at the time is a big part of it. The Saturn worked amazing as a 2d console despite some hardware limitations with transparencies and whatnot. Obviously it could handle 3d but the Playstation had it beat hands down as it shipped. More robust hardware as well as a focus more on the 2d sprite based games would have done well to boost it's numbers and perception. Ultimately, after the Sega CD they put themselves into a position where they didn't want to abandon their customer base, so they continued to go with add-ons foolishly. Instead of realizing it wasn't really working after two tries they just said fuck it hat trick. That in turn sets in motion the events around the Saturn & Dreamcast. They didn't so much abandon their base but instead alienated and pissed them off. As we know the fan's goodwill came back for Dreamcast but it was too little too late. If they got their shit together and pumped out a Neptune rather than a 32X I think they might have held on a bit longer. If you really want to keep the 32x so model 1 & 2 owners can play, have that be the secondary focus of the campaign. Sort of like modern era where we have disc & digital only consoles but we can still buy the disc drive to upgrade the digital only.
@@cd5sircoupe Neptune definitely would have been less complicated but wouldn’t have made Genesis owners happy rebuying that part of same console too though. My mindset is there were alot of kids whose parents were poor or didn’t want to spend big money on next-gen consoles yet and the 32x at $159 was more palatable than $400 for the Saturn. I think Sega should of pivoted to being like how Nintendo does today, purposely sell a cheaper, lower-specced console and compete on having unique titles versus trying to compete with Sony or MS in the hardware department. Would it have worked I don’t know, but releasing the 32x and killing support a year later didn’t do them any good. As someone who loved my 32x I just think it gets a bad rep thru revisionist history, more people I think were upset at its quick cancellation than the quality of it itself. I appreciated finally getting to own Doom when my family didn’t have a computer.
@@mikeg2491 Ok, I'm not saying the Neptune would have been a magic bandaid. I'm saying change the strategy. Neptune is your main focus for the budget line of hardware, put in the time to develop it properly rather than rushing the 32x add on. Price the Neptune somewhere around 200-250$, keep the 32x at 125-150$ for everybody that already owns the Genesis. Straight up kill the Sega CD and divert resources from that. They weren't exactly flying off the shelves or had a ton of exclusive games coming out. I'm not saying stop developing games for the CD, just stop offering the hardware as a stand alone upgrade. At that point if somebody was going to be in the Sega CD ecosystem they were already there, it was old. New adopters of the now Neptune would have that capability out of the box. Somebody who had a Gen/CD combo could just buy the 32X if they wanted to play. Hell, phase out the old Genesis hardware like 1-1.5 years after Neptune releases to cut overhead, I don't know what kind of timeline they had hoped to work with. I think that's a much more sound strategy than going ass over elbow like both Segas did back then. Both sides of the company made some questionable decisions that ultimately killed them. For what it's worth, I was there in the trenches and experienced it all too. I would have been 9 in 1995, my "own" first console was a Genesis, though I cut my teeth on Atari and Arcade. My game consoles growing up almost exclusively came from the flea market, so they were a lot more palatable cost wise than brand new. Games were a bit more spread evenly between new & used. My dad is a doctor, so he didn't have money trouble or anything... but he's a picker/collectible hoarder/deal hunter. Still goes to the flea markets and tag sales to this day at like 70. I can understand the need to finally be able to play Doom, wasn't impressed with the 32x version though. My family always had PCs since I was like 5 though, so I had Doom, Wolfenstein, Blake Stone, Duke Nukem, Quake, all sorts of different FPS games... the shareware versions. I had a lot of other full games but somehow specifically this genre I never had the full version of a game.
I had a very similar experience at least with hooking up the 32X and Sega CD. I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time so I had no idea how to hook up any of the consoles and stuff. My dad had lost interest in games around the NES but he was always great in buying and helping my brother and I set up our game consoles. My dad was baffled trying to figure out how to get everything working with the Sega CD early on as well as the 32X later. My dad didn't really care as much about the quality after it was hooked up like your dad, though 😂 I think he was just happy it was working and we weren't bothering him about it anymore. 😆
Great video, Tyler 👍🏽, by the way, I was always curious about the Sega 32X add-on, it looks cool but it has a small library of game titles. But I would still purchase it even now in 2023 to add it to my Sega Genesis console.
Our first 32X game was also Star Wars Arcade, BUT we didn't buy an adapter cable that you needed if you were plugging it into a Genesis model 1. So, when you played, there were no polygonal enemy ships to shoot at. In me and my brother's innocence, we fired at the targeting squares that appeared and thought that was just how you played the game. Then we rented Knuckles Chaotix from Blockbuster, and there were no characters on the screen; only the background. I thought the 32X was busted and wanted to cry. My dad took me to KMart where we asked someone at the electronics register about it, and he immediately grabbed a cable that was hanging nearby, and said this is what you'll need. I went home, plugged it in, and was amazed by what I was previously missing with Star Wars Arcade and it's cool 3D polygon graphics. My dad reminded me that I had to play Knuckles Chaotix instead because it was a rental, and then could go back to Star Wars afterwards. I loved my 32X, and this video was a fun blast from the past. Thanks.
Yes! I actually grew up in a rural area and amazingly we got it way out there. My dad loved it I think because it was cheaper than me begging him for new games all the time. I was joyed when Phantasy Star 4 hit the network and I raced to try and beat it in a month but never did, I purposely kept my save file on there until it reappeared again a few months later and I picked up and beat it. A lot more affordable than its $90 cartridge lol
Great video, how did your dad react to the release of the Sega Saturn and later the Dreamcast? Did any of those ill fated consoles temporarily restore his faith in Sega or was there no going back after the 32X?
I didn’t ever get to play 32x or sega cd. I was a late adopter with genesis in 1994 but it did become my main console until my PlayStation Christmas of ‘97
Gen X representing here, a little bit older, I was a teen in the 90s. I had the Master System, Genesis, SegaCD (which I adored) and the 32x (which ended up being my LAST Sega console). My folks never had an interest in videogames so I always assembled everything on my own, Gen-X latchkey kid style -- must've been cool to have a dad who enjoyed gaming. Funny how so many of us had camcorders to record home movies back in the day -- decades before the internet gave us a common platform to share content. Now you've got all this wonderful raw footage to help augment new content.
I steered clear of the 32x after owning both the Genesis and Sega CD. I just didn't have the money at the time to spend on another add-on. Sega should not have bothered with the 32x and instead poured more resources into making the Saturn a better successor to the Genesis. Imagine if the Saturn had backward-compatibility with Sega CD, or even with the Genesis for that matter. That would have been a real game changer.
I liked the handful of 32x games that I have...but we all felt that disappointment that your dad experienced. I think it's awesome that he actually called Sega to voice his concerns!

🤔 Did your dad return bad sounding Genesis games ...thankfully he never bought Genesis model 2 😂
Your dad would be so proud to no what you've done with the legacy that he has inspired you to create. Pre-grats on the 100k subs and the many millions of people your stories have been able to touch and help us reconnect with our childhoods, and the millions more I am sure you will reach. Your editing and passion is top notch. I wish you all the best.

I think having a dad into gaming back in those days would be a kid's dream!
It was a blessed childhood for sure man
I grew up in a household of adult gamers who owned a computer/electronics repair shop and also knew all the pawn shop owners so we always had pretty much everything.
I was a game nut! , my dad was a car guy unfortunately....

Why just back in those days? Can't be that way now?
Your dad sounded like a really great guy who just wanted the best for himself and his family and it is a real shame the world lost such a great guy so soon.
It's sad he's gone
Agreed. What a cool dude! 💯
He also wanted the best for sega as loyal customer. He called them to inform them, not to shout at them. A responsible citizen/client.
Agreed. Tyler had a good dad.
Your dad was right to be mad at Sega. The 32X should have been axed during pre-production.
The beginning of the end for the company, sadly.
@@stpworld horrible sound quality, meme his dad face returns and phone calls 📞 if he ever bought crappy Genesis 2
can Sega release that recorded call to you one day ?
@@leeartlee915they only released 40 games they milked their brand and let customers down.
Your dad was such a bastion of enthusiasm and excitement that is genuinely sad to see him disappointed. It is weird that the 32X came after the Sega CD because at the time, you really were not going to get CD quality audio on a cartridge. It was always doomed to be a backward step in that department
Such an oddity that Sega released. It had potential though if they played to its strengths
Why, jaguar had better than CD quality on cart with super bike (48000khz). To get CD sound, pair with Sega cd = 32xCD games. 32x was awesome stop gap. Better than svp. 3d Virtua fighter virtua racing doom star wars arcade metal head plus 2d greats like tempo kolibri so much color and better bitrate 32x sound.
There were a couple of games that were 32X CD games I believe. I wonder if those games used the CD primarily for the music sound quality?
The 32X does have its own sound chip that's above SNES in quality. But it was combined with the Genesis chip, often making the Genesis do the music while the 32X did the sound effects.
Doom being an example. The sound effects are great, way better than SNES but it's music is obviously not up to 32 bit standards.
AfterBurner and Space Harrier sound identical to the arcade which is far beyond what Genesis sound can do, but those games were already oldies.
NBA JAM TE
Has epic in between quarter and half time jams all 32X, but the gameplay again 32X only does sound effects while Genesis does the music.
There's more examples too but I make my point. 32X wasn't helpless with sound but clearly could have used CD for some help.
I wonder 🤔 if his dad returned bad sounding Genesis games ...thankfully he never bought Genesis model 2 😂
Hey! Here's to 45 years of gaming. It's so wonderful how you've been in this community for so long. Here's to many more, my dear friend.
@@paranormalskeptic3893 "I believe" I can fly.....
62 eek I am 41 and can't imagine another 21 years here. Cool you play games though.
Your dad thinking it was defective is so wholesome lmao, he gave sega the benefit of the doubt!!
He seemed pretty smart as that was a plausible explanation. I have an A/V receiver that works fine but this one time the clock fell out of sync with the digital audio sample rate and made everyone sound like jarbled robots. The audio was still intelligible but it just sounded like trash. A good ol' turn off and on again fixed it.
hahaha so good
No he kinda nailed it.
“Le heckin wholesale”
Damn, you were that friend's friend that owned a 3DO 😂
@@NintenDan.2005 Somehow I was! I say that because we were NOT a wealthy family. One of my best friends growing up laughed because we "have sheets for closet doors but always have the coolest electronics." I was fortunate to have parents who prioritized their children's Christmas wish lists over home repairs.
Everybody is an amateur until they pass the 32x hook up test!
I hope these series never end man. I love the feeling the 90's gave this channel is priceless
Your Dad was truly old school. Would love to have a recording of that call. 😄
Somewhere Sega Did have a recording of that call. Maybe a dusty old HDD somewhere
@@rubyjones7151 Are you sure? I don't think too many companies recorded phone calls back then. Heck, even Squaresoft, the developers of some of the highest selling games in the world didn't even back up their game files. @@rubyjones7151HDD? In 94-95'? I'd think a loop play machine would be where it was recorded, as they kept tape, literal tape, at that time for that. Digital phone storage was not really a thing yet.

Man your Dad seems like the coolest guy. I loved this video with all the home footage.
As a kid, I never got the 32X because I could tell it was a gimmick for the most part. But when the Dreamcast came out, I wasn't at all disappointed. It's a shame Sony destroyed it with better titles, but I'll forever love Sega for the happiness it brought me. And I still play Shenmue to this day!!
dreamcast was top tier in 1999-2001. the 4 player Powerstone and Worms Armageddon wasn't available on PS2!

All those failed Sega consoles after the Genesis is what Sega gets for trying to rip-off Nintendo's success.

I was like your Dad a massive Sega fan boy. I was working at Electronics Boutique here in the UK when the 32x released. I set it up and knew Sega had messed up. It was terrible but it did grow on me.
SEGA needs to be brought back.
Always love seeing the videos. It was great finally meeting you at SEGE 2023.
Fun video! Those few shots of your dad outside grabbing his elbow was used perfectly to show his pain for the console. But I am curious to what happened to his elbow? Heh
Looked like...maybe a scene from a homemade movie? Comedy skit, perhaps?
I skipped over the 32x and went with the Saturn then Dreamcast. God I miss those days. Thanks for the great content and your dads my Sega hero!

The story telling is bar none. Having all this old footage, incredible.
Dad was ahead of his time in gaming pretty dope story
That Clip at 12:56 13:22- just reminds me of the 90s so much lol All your buddies coming over when a new game came out staying up late taking turns trying to beat it.

But my buddy made it his mission to go out of his way saying it sucked, there was no Scorpion or Rayden, the graphics looked more cartoony, the finishers sucked, it was a waste of money, sucks to be you bro, etc. etc. lol.

Boy did that rant of his come back to bite him in the butt because I came fully loaded lmao.
I had the genesis all the way until the first xbox came out.. i didn't have a gaming dad like you 😂
I got one back in 2016 and I love it.

Thanks.
Does anyone remember the sega channel? That was a game changer during the 90s
Yes! We had it. I’ll have to do an entire video on it someday
@@MyRetroLifeI had it in 1995.
A lot more affordable than its $90 cartridge lol
i love me 32x and sega cd.. still have them and all the games in original boxes
Love all these vids. Your dad was such a badass!
Man, seeing that EB plastic bag seriously just brought me back. I'm a 43-year old gamer and i absolutely love your content. Keep it up brother
Great video, how did your dad react to the release of the Sega Saturn and later the Dreamcast? Did any of those ill fated consoles temporarily restore his faith in Sega or was there no going back after the 32X?
This is a really well made video, it’s entertaining and heartfelt. Great job dude!
Christmas 1994 was the downfall of Sega.
The failure of the 32X.
The success of Donkey Kong Country.
The rise of PlayStation.
Now Nintendo is angering me
I didn’t ever get to play 32x or sega cd. I was a late adopter with genesis in 1994 but it did become my main console until my PlayStation Christmas of ‘97
Sega folks are cooler than Nintendo kids😂
West Oaks Mall! didn't realize you were a Houston guy, badass
Wonderful video. Sega dropped the ball hard with the 32x
Sega of America did.
My dad and I played games a lot together growing up. Thank u for sharing these moments
I love how much time you and your dad spent together, my dad was at the pub my whole childhood
It's cool how much your Dad loved Sega. 😂
The "promo" he filmed felt like a TH-cam video ahead of its time.
Good on your dad for recognizing sound quality. I didn't really think about sound until I was an adult.
Im sorry I lost it - LOL! I know exactly how disappointing it would have been-
I was at that store for the Dreamcast launch working. Hwy 6 & Westhiemer now its dead
Funny how when you look at a Genesis hooked up to a 32X and Sega CD it looks like the Genesis is on life support 😂😂😂
Hello Man, it's so nice you share this with us!! so nice
all the best
I liked the handful of 32x games that I have...but we all felt that disappointment that your dad experienced. I think it's awesome that he actually called Sega to voice his concerns!
