Thank you guys for all your insight. 25:00 in, y'all talk about lower RPM, lower load driving and leaning it out with just a touch of boost to help the volumetric efficiency. I'm looking at hypermiling an 8.3L / 8.9L Cummins RV, am currently considering 120 horsepower (flatland 60mph cruise tune). You have me looking into compounds.
Edit: You guys just keep touching on all the topics I've talked about at length on high efficiency forums! Lol, got me when you called EOC / Engine off coast guys "crazy" yeah... do that a lot too, with heat considerations. But the gains are ridiculous depending on terrain, coasting literal miles with hills. I subbed, great video.

@pddofficial aside the cost savings vs hotel / renting, it's large enough to run multiple CNG tanks, and solar array. There are multiple people running busses 400 miles a week off solar right now, but I want more range then 400, can't afford to get stuck if it's cloudy or need AC during recharge times.
Quick question though, if you were lugging a cummins at like... 1100 rpm, 125+hp where do you think that'd fall on injection timing?
I know your group is mostly "higher rpm" but I'm curious where your tables are in that range?

Love this ❤ fuel economy tends to be ignored too much.
i want to make the most fuel efficient 12v cummins. Not for massive speed, crazy horsepower, just daily driving with 65mpg highway speeds, hauling very rarely.
just a daily driver, and truck to go travel in because the engine is so cool.
I was even thinking of putting the 12v engine in a monte Carlo, for a vehicle lower to the ground with better aerodynamics.
Keeping a fully mechanical engine thats very fuel efficient is intresting and for some reason not thought of enough.
The focus away from chasing horsepower to economy is more i want to see.
You guys should try to make the most fuel efficient 12 valve cummins, see the highest MPG possible focused for daily driving

After healthy set up and maintenance. My 97’ 12v and my dad’s 07’ 6.7 Cummins get better average mileage if you keep boost under 12psi and fuel pressure under 14psi. Aka low throttle and shifting smooth with terrain. Being consistent with driving smooth really affects mileage over a tank.

Just by deleting the emissions equipment and preprogrammed ct tunes on race me ultra and a 5” Flo pro with muffler on my 2020 Laramie 2500 I went from 18mpg average per tank up to 25mpg average per tank. That’s with higher shift points, more power, more torque but better fuel economy. The limiting factor on all these newer trucks to me is the emissions equipment, they are killing our trucks performance, reliability and power. Eliminate the restrictions and cleaning up the air by not recirculating exhaust gas and that’s the single greatest improvement to my trucks fuel economy I’ve done so far. Just thought I’d share, great podcast

With those closing statements, it would be awesome to see a timing curve that Meyer came up with on a 24v Common Rail. As someone who tows our 5.9 with a pretty good sized 5th Wheel, I've found a few things about the "curve" of what this engine asks for to maintain a clean tailpipe and sub-1300F EGTs. Eventually, I hope to put a S476SXE Compound setup over my S364SX-R non-wastegated and really let it tow well for all situations and altitude.

I completely agree!! I don't have to choose between a gas mizer little truck that will be 20ish MPG or a V8 gas guzzler that won't break past 14 mpg to be able to tow a trailer. My 02' Cummins can get me 21mpg driving nicely and I towed a trailer from Nellis AFB in Vegas to Nashville and still got me 16mpg.

As a data point to anyone interested: I had to drive to San Antonio and back from Dallas TX over the weekend between Christmas and New years, pulling a 34' enclosed utility trailer (that's got an 8' interior height) to move a buddy down there. Driving my 97' 3500 with stock tires and no modifications to the truck except slight adjustments to the star wheel and smoke screw, I achieved about 10mpg driving down in 4th gear at about 60-64 mph, at about 2500 RPM with a 3.55 rear end. Driving home, I decided i didn't care if 5th gear walked off, I wanted to see how she would do, and I drove back to Dallas at about 65 mph in 5th, sitting at about 1900 rpm, and achieved 14mpg.

Agree with the SOA pistons. The big OEMs spend billions of dollars on R&D; Volvo, Detroit, CAT, Cummins, Isuzu, Kawasaki, etc. If the technology even came close to offering the mileage and emissions gains they claim, it would have been gobbled up a long time ago. Even a 3% improvement is an edge.

Owner operator here. Truck of choice is the vp44 24v with the nv5600. It's a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with airbags, exhaust brake, and 3.55 gears.
The engine is fitted with 7x10's injectors by Weston Shuppe. Turbo of choice is a hx 35 based 60/67/12 with a spring gate, built by Duncan Fenley. Custom tuning is done by Smarty s03 and Revo adjustments. Truck is smoke free on the street. 100gph fass to keep up with clean fresh fuel.
Two inch level running 305/65 r 17 BFG a/t tires.
After 100s of thousands of miles, this is the base tuning i do for mpg.
Tune for a high torque engine. Your cruising rpm needs to be about 150 rpm higher than your peak torque rpm. Example. If your peak torque is at 1750 rpm, cruise at 1900. There's a lot at play here, from timing, injection angle, pressures etc which i can give minute detail, but not space for that.
My truck pulls very strong, no smoke, gets an average of 21 mpg at 75 mph empty and 16.57 pulling a 24 ft enclosed trailer grossing 22k lbs.
Fun fact. The stock vp44 lasts 500k miles if fed clean fuel at 17 psi.

@pddofficial also worth noting: I have both first and second hand experience with the dimpled pistons, and have spent many hours on the phone with owner/founder. I completely understand the difficulty in justifying the expense (I personally paid nowhere near what they're currently charging), but they DO work. If you ever decide to give them a try, I can help you with the tuning on them. I can tell you, though, they simply don't require as much timing as a smooth piston.

I have a 2007 5.9 with cold air intake, 5 inch exhaust, in tank pump and a FASS filter system. The truck is a quad cab, with automatic. It has a Carli Pintop suspension and 35 inch tires. I have run the stock tune, as well as the 30 HP and 60 HP tune on Smarty S06.
I get about 15.5-16 MPG running 70-75 MPH on the interstate. I get 9.5 pulling a 30 foor bumperpull camper that weighs about 9300 pounds loaded.
I think I should at least be getting better MPG when not towing. I know the small lift and 35's cut down mileage a bit, but i think it should be better than it is.

I'm just now installing your "Add-A-S400 Compound Turbo Kit" on my '03 5.9 CR and noted the comments around the factory turbine restriction toward the end of this video. How much loaded & empty fuel economy gain, if any, would I expect to see by replacing the factory turbo as well while I'm in there and would you recommend Aggressor 60/67 or the 62/67 for that with emphasis on lightly loaded fuel economy?

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I have never done back to back on that kit. It stands to reason you would see a gain but i can’t promise it will. Either turbo would work well as the manifold charger but i would most likely lean to the 60/67 for towing duties.

Hey guys, love the podcasts, and I'm learning a lot but have questions. I am building a 97 12v 4x4, with 4.11 gears and maual trans, into a ramp truck with 164 original miles. I have already bought from you most of the engine parts but I'm still building the chassis so they are on the shelf waiting. (please look them up so u know what I'm doing) In this video you were talking about the 055 delivery valves being more fuel efficient than the 025's. Should I return the 025's for the 055's? I'm hoping to make around 650hp when I turn everything up but would still like to get the best mpg possible when flat landing. I'm estimating the truck will be about 12-15k loaded and pulling a 10k trailer.

I didn’t hear any discussion on exhaust manifold effect on efficiency. I thought that was one of the selling points of a Steed Speed manifold. Also what are your thoughts on W2A versus A2A intercooling and its effect on mileage?
We added propane to our 6.9 turbo powered Econoline and saw a slight mileage improvement with a minimal blend percentage but the power addition was worth it alone. I’m not saying it was a powerhouse but it was noticeable on the hills. I will say we need to bump the timing on that 6.9 after watching this episode.
I have watched your “Double the HP on your 12V” video several times and saw where the torque and hp lines crossed and assume that is where the engine is at peak efficiency. I again assume that if I were to operate near that line that mileage would best?
My current build (1990 Ford Econoline 4x4) uses as many of the good mileage makers as possible.
12V Cummins (400hp kit with AFC live)
    Hamilton 178/208 cam
    .020 over bore(by necessary)
    Water to air intercooling
    NV4500
    Gear Vendors Overdrive
    Powershot 2000 propane injection
    3.55 gears
I need to finish it(slow pay as I go project) but hoping for a solid 25mpg or more at higher highway speeds. I lose most people when I talk about the aero improvements I’d like to incorporate in to cross country travel. Aero improvements I’d like to add are a removable air dam, side skirts and aero tail. I’m hoping they help maybe let me hit 30mpg. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

    Summary
    • 🔧 Start with Basics: Regular truck maintenance like checking fuel pressure, cleaning air filters, and ensuring tires are fully inflated improves fuel efficiency. Minor leaks in the turbo or exhaust can severely affect MPG.
    • 🛠️ Mods for Efficiency: Modifications such as replacing old injectors, advancing timing, and using mild aftermarket cams can enhance fuel economy. Using injectors with higher pop pressure improves fuel atomization and efficiency.
    • 🚛 Driving Techniques Matter: Driving at consistent speeds, decelerating on hills, and coasting downhill when safe significantly enhance mileage. Avoid prolonged idling, as it wastes fuel.
    • 🌀 Freeing Airflow: Enhancements like larger exhaust systems and upgraded turbos reduce pumping losses and improve engine performance without compromising MPG.
    • 📊 Tire and Gear Ratio Impact: Tires with low rolling resistance and appropriate gear ratios greatly influence cruising efficiency. Larger, off-road tires reduce fuel economy substantially.
    • ⚡ Compound vs. Single Turbos: Compound turbos improve towing fuel economy but may not be optimal for light, flat-ground driving due to added restrictions.
    • 🏎️ Driving Styles: Aggressive driving, high RPMs, and heavy loads lower MPG significantly. Gentle acceleration and maintaining moderate speeds optimize efficiency.
    • 💡 Advanced Fueling Components: Modern injectors and delivery valves play a significant role in clean combustion, better starts, and improved overall efficiency.
    Insights Based on Numbers
    1. Old vs. New Injectors: Upgrading worn injectors can yield up to a 2 MPG improvement.
    2. Cruise Efficiency: Traveling at 64 mph instead of 75 mph improved one truck’s MPG from 17 to 24.6.
    3. Small Adjustments: Properly inflated tires and clean exhaust systems can reduce fuel consumption by 5-10%.

I've got a 05 RC DRW with a full boxed flatbed 2wd on Mitch LT2s up front and Vredstine ATs out back. Truck is 8200 pounds full of fuel. It's a NV5600 that was built by Super Stick dual disc Valair towing clutch and 3.73 rear. Engine is sadly still stock minus an aluminum rad and crap injen intake, 5 inch straight pipe. 17+ isn't uncommon if I care, I've seen 24. Around town, 11-13. Yanked our 6500 pound 30 foot travel trailer 2700 miles couple years ago. Gross was pushing 16K with the 100 gal drag tank on the bed and all the tools. Averaged 11 running 75-80. 15 running 65 on the back roads. All on the gulf coast. I shouldn't complain but I used 2 gallons of oil on that trip. Oil consumption hasn't gotten better. Just been dumping oil in it. Hell, been literally using used oil as fuel, which seems to help milage.
Hoping it's just one broken ring but guess I'll see at somepoint. Might be this summer, might be next decade. Might actually just call yall soon to pick yalls brain.

The high percentage of wear on start up is misunderstood.
Its not start up , its warm up.
Start up may accelerate wear on bearings for a couple of seconds but engines wear out on the cylinder , ring seal not on bearings.
Its the heat cycle from cold to running temp where the wear takes place on your engine.
That is why stop start technology is not as bad (Turbos excluded) as people often think.
Heat cycles not short "dry" starts are the engine killer.

The Crank strokes 160 thou more than factory, so 80 thou higher and 80 thou lower. So technically all you need to take off is .080". But we like to install the Pistons uncut first, measure and then deck, so you can shoot for a specific piston protrusion. Normally if your piston protrusion was outside of tolerance, you would run a thinker gasket, but in the performance world we prefer factory thickness as they hold power better.

What seems to work best is a p pumped 6.2 stroker 12 valve with a compound turbo system. I've got the right tire size, transmission ratio and differential ratio scienced out to make it happen. Putting me in an operating range between 1300-2000 rpm with a cruise of 66 mph at 1500.

We'd love to claim MPG gains from batwings! However it is extremely hard to quantify MPG gains, especially on something that would yeild small gains such as pedistals. Now if this was a 4.10 work truck, towing at 2400rpm plus, pushrods and pedistals might make a measurably difference!

Would stock dv’s 181 be the best for mileage over a 055

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

Purely for milage, stock DV's do seem to get slightly better milage when running a sub 5x11 injector. Once you start going bigger in injectors, you can run larger DV's without the side effects, and can even increase milage slightly due to a slight timing bump. The DV's job is to drop the injecion pressure after the injection event ends to cleanly end the event, if you put a "bigger" DV in, it removes less fuel from the event. When you have bigger injectors, the pressure is lower at the end of the event so the DV isn't required to drain as much, hence you can get away with a larger DV without the side effects the larger of injector you run.

Likely no damage! The sealing rings generally don't seal up well with the new DV's and so we recommend simply removing them as all of our DV's are lapped before they leave the facility. If you do end up getting a leak due to a sealing ring, you'll know because you'll have a slight mis on that cylinder.
