This hack is perfect. It’s tough, but there’s not cheap, didn’t seem like there were any Kaizo traps, and the short length of most levels meant you’re rewarded for pulling off a 1 in 10 maneuver without having to do like 5 more 1 in 10 maneuvers in the same level. Plus the subtle programming changes, like I don’t believe the rotodisk and boom boom would mesh together on the same screen on vanilla Smb3…he had to edit that. And the instant death blocks obviously are an ASM hack. I want to play this and try to beat without savestates. Thanks Mitch for the great commentary!

    "Look Gary, there I am!"
Jokes aside, this was a fun TAS to make. There are definitely improvements to be made, apparently the person I'm working with has saved about 20 seconds through new level routing I think.
Some notes (text wall, Read more at your own risk):
    1. (I promise I'm not trying to sound offended or mad) Guanlong is "gwahn-long". It's all good.
    2. 1-2 - Yes, we love slide strats! We can't really keep all the speed because we go through two waterfalls. By the end of the level we're at 55 speed I think.
    3. 1-F - Yes, we need to wait for the Donut block to fall. Gotta love the post-orb daredevil stuff.
    4. 1-5 - Yeah, clipping the note block is a grand total of 2 frames faster.
    5. 1-A - You have no idea how goofy those cannonball hitboxes are. Also, you can only walljump off of the right side of a wall (as in you're moving to the left and hit walljump pixel), so that definitely limits what we can do with walljumps, but we're not completely hung out to dry. Of course, OSWGs don't save much time, and uh yeah I forgot to do them in the other worlds (Most require a boost from the boss), so there's potential timesave there.
    6. 2-2 - I love that bit where I skip the Parakoopa bounce. Also I love being able to just jump over the Muncher on that final pipe.
    7. 2-Q - Sure, beanstalk skip sounds cool. Not that I discovered it, but it's definitely a cool skip nonetheless.
    8. 2-F - That first Ptooie's hit box is goofy. You have to jump so high to dodge it. Also note how the falling Spiny turned into a boomerang.
    9. 2-5 - Average TAS autoscroller (I did the best I could). Really grateful to see that one bounce off the falling Dry Bones get a bit of a highlight, I loved doing that.
    10. 2-8 - 2-8 is definitely a level. Really great for showing off TAS precision, and it's pretty cool to be able to keep P-Speed out of the pipe.
    11. 2-Hammer Bro - Yes, dying is actually faster.
    12. 2-A - I love walljumps. Also did you notice the blue block going through the floor? And yes, I should have been able to get OSWG here off Morton.
    13. W3 - Weeeeenie whistleeeeeeeee
    14. 4-1 - Yeah I know the P-Speed there was janky, but it's legitimately the best I could find. Turning back anymore before stutter-stepping made the first arrow appear much later, and turning back much less makes me bonk into the pipe (which I did in version 2 of this TAS)
    15. 4-2 - I'm not sure about the ending either, but it's still a fun level to TAS.
    16. 4-3 - Yeah, I really appreciate the "bite-size" level design that was used for this hack.
    17. 4-4 - You have no idea how happy I am that you can skip that last note block.
    18. 4-F - Honestly I have no idea whether you can, I forgor 💀
    19. 5-7 - Originally I was sweating about how to do the level before breaking the blocks above you and jumping onto the Para-Beetle, but then I realized I can be ready for it before it comes out of the wall, so uh that's neat I guess. Also that last part is really cool. I, too, wonder what was behind that lock...
    20. 5-A - This is a fun one.
    21. 6-2 - Yay finally an exploit in this game! To be honest, I have no idea whether it's actually faster due to lower horizontal speeds while falling with the leaf and stuff, but I thought it'd be cool to finish what I could with the leaf to skip some stuff whether it was faster or not.
    22. 6-3 - Also I'm pretty sure you could get P-Speed on those Munchers with some arrow manipulation.
    23. 6-4 - I managed to lose some frames *somewhere* in that P-Speed. I have no clue what happened. Also I have no clue why the 1000 appears in the corner.
    24. 6-F - Not a fan of TASing this level, but the clip into the pipe ceiling is cool.
    25. 6-F2 - I *loved* being able to do that jump.
    26. 7-1 - Is it fair anymore if I say Kuriboh's Shoe?
    27. 7-3 - Yeah no you can't get past that Piranha Plant. Trust me, I tried doing a midair to avoid an extra jump and got stuck on the Chungus Plant. Bro has a fat hitbox.
    28. 7-4 - Yes, this is the Any% run. Also yeah the level is a lot harder to TAS than the TAS makes it seem.
    29. 7-6 - Yeah this was a fun level to do. Very satisfying to do that massive midair.
    30. 7-F - Ok yeah apparently you can so OSWG in a Fort. And no you still hit the wand on the same frame.
    31. 8-2 - Originally at the end, I would get P-Speed because the Boomerang Bro would literally jump over me. However, this did not work in the v3 TAS. I'm guessing something about cycles and stuff, cause delaying frames to change RNG didn't work.
    32. 8-3 - Nah, I just jumped off the block the last frame I could, nothing too special.
    33. 8-F - The only time you can die in a Fort and not get the boot.
    34. 8-5 - Jabem told me that there had to be a way around the Munchers at the end, so I found one. Again, I don't think this saves much time, if any at all. Also that shell jump into the Piranha Plant was cool.
    35. 17:55 relatable
    36. 8-6 - Also what's that version you're talking about? Can I get it on romhacking.net?
37: 8-C - To be honest I just kept it cause I could. Sucks that you can't statue stomp Bowser, but you can annihilate pure fire (as long as it faces the right way).
Overall, this was fun to TAS, and it's cool to see more time being squeezed out of it since I've been working with someone else. Thanks for taking the time to watch this, and hopefully soon you'll have an SMB3 Any% NWW A Button Challenge to watch...

1:34 the nes is not struggling to load the platforms, the nes can only show 8 8x8 sprites at one time per scan line across (no limit vertically). So sprite flickering is happening to keep all the sprites drawn on the screen giving that glitch look.
Each platform is 6x2 sprites so that is 18 sprites trying to draw all at once across and needs to flicker to accommodate the limitation.

Dunno why but I just remembered the time a guy tried to convince me that a TAS was done by manually editing sprites in imaging software and then animating the frames like a cartoon.

I got this the first time I saw Mitch play it. Managed to get up to around 2-8 IIRC, but dude, 1-1 was a beast of a level for me. Grinding for a couple of hours with maybe 3 smoke breaks before I managed to beat it, but I got through World 1 within about an hour after that. I don't remember what snagged me up in World 2 because it was a while ago; maybe I shall revisit it? Probably have a save state on my Everdrive. ✌💗🤘

    • @Real_Artician
      @Real_Artician ปีที่แล้ว

@@thexbigxgreenYou don't think so, until your manipulating stubborn RNG. Enemy movement into optimal patterns, losing a few frames to gain a ton, there is a lot that goes into a good TAS. The movement, while trivially easier than RTA, is only a small part of TASing. A TAS has to be perfect

    • @GuanlongX
      @GuanlongX 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Real_Articianboth of you are right (Person who made the tas here). TASing itself isn't usually hard, just tedious. I'm replying here cause i was working on a new smb3 tas last night and had to waste several frames to get two hammer bros to move down. But the fun of tasing almost always outweighs the tedium of rng manipping, even if it can take a long time to finish a TAS. And they don't always have to be perfect. That's how improvements are made, after all.
