Your halftone method worked well for me. I used it to make a traditional halftone, for lo-tech printing a booklet from a laser printer. It has a great retro feel, which I matched with Courier font.
I love half tones and have a large library of eps and jpg texture files that i use in Affinity photo or designer. Im always using some sort of scuff or half tones in my work. I had no idea Affinity photo could generate half tones too.Good to know. Love the tutorial!
Awesome, glad you got some value. Also, you could also use your own halftone textures with the Hard Mix blending layer. It won't be as flexible, but those may add some cool effects too. One tip would be to add a slight Gaussian blur to those textures as well.
@@DaveConrey i usually play with blend modes to see which ends up looking best.i imported a bunch of them into affinity designers assets panel so they were easy to use ,but now it slows down how fast it opens. Im going to have to rethink that.
3:08 Web search says that the most common monochromatic halftone is output in 45 degrees. While on the web, the 33 degrees came up as the angle of Masonic Freemasons' compass. There is 133 LPI (lines per inch), but it is for old magazine printing. Then there is CMYK process color separations.
Thank you Sir for your amazing content. I had to smile a little when you brought up that VW Van Image with the license plate from my Hometown "Mainz" in Germany.
I wondered if it was a legitimate plate, or one for aesthetics. I drove through Mainz once, on a trip from Frankfurt to Landstuhl. Looks like a beautiful city.
Excellent tutorial and just what I was looking for. Affinity Photo and Designer are a great alternative to a PS subscription. Thanks. Liked and Subscribed.
Oh something like this I’ve been thinking of making since I saw video of a photoshopping that looked like art piece from a woodcutting or a dollar bill.
Using this same process, but changing to the "lines" option in the Halftone filter instead of monochrome or color, and you might be able to pull off a woodcutting texture. Depending on the image, you'd want to play with the cell size and the angle to get the desired effect.
Hey Dave, a noob question but - When you’re selecting the layers and the windows appear to adjust etc, should that happen or is there a setting I need to do? Doesn’t happen for me. New to photo! And I’m enjoying the live streams. Good stuff
Hi Neil, I’m not sure I 100% understand your question, but let me see if I get this right. When on a later, you add an adjustment layer, which brings up the dialog box for that tool. You’re making changes to it, but nothing send to happen? Not depending on the adjustment you’ve chosen, it could be one of a few things. First, Is the adjustment layer above the layer you want to alter or nested as a mask within the main layer? Second, is the main layer an image layer or a pixel layer. Some adjustments may not work on image layer. So if you imported a photo, it starts as an image layer. Try duplicating that layer and then rasterizing that duplicated layer, keeping the adjustment layer on top. That may change the ability of the adjustment layer. That also applies to vector shapes that have not been rasterized. There might be a couple other reasons this may be the case but let me know if this answered your question or not. If you need more clarification, make sure to @ me or TH-cam won’t notify me when you’ve replied.
Awesome tutorial. Got a question for ya though: do you know how to separate CMYK channels for printing? Basically so I could shoot each process color & layer for a finished color photo print. I've tried, & spectacularly failed every time. Thanks man!
Affinity halftone for me better than adobe. I created circle, add simple gradient, then add halftone (lines 2 with 20-30 contrast and 33 angle)next i copy it 5 times and add to each halftone +33 angle to get 198 at last one Super effect in less than a minute (in photoshop it's gonna take a little bit longer)
Is it possible to paint in Affinity Photo using textures? I’ve seen a lot of a Photoshop videos showing how to turn a 2D image into something that looks three-dimensional by using textures. But I haven’t seen any Affinity Photo videos that show how this type of artwork can be created in Affinity Photo. Is this possible to do in Affinity Photo? Does Affinity Photo have the same tools as Photoshop for creating these types of images?
@@DaveConrey Thank you for letting me know! I have to look more into this because I’m not exactly sure how the pattern brush works in Photoshop and how it’s different from painting textures with brushes in Affinity. But I think it looks very cool how 2D images can be turned into 3D by using Photoshop. It would be amazing if Affinity adds this feature because I’d definitely love to try it, since it’s a type of art that really interests me.
I have tried really hard to make a good brush from a halftone, but struggled with it. I believe Retro Art Supply figured it out, but I couldn't get the pattern to repeat the right way.
That exact thing happened to me on Redbubble. I had a cute Warhol style illustration of some Vdubs and they pulled it down because of the logos. BTW I was 666 on the like button!
FYI, even the bus model sans VW logo WILL get taken down. Even if you change the fenders, the wheels, etc. VW are kind of 'not sees' in this respect, which is kind of fitting given their history. No, I'm not bitter about this at all...
Wow. I could do that lots, lots, lots easier in the small version of Pixelmator. And as easily in the big Pixelmator Pro! I think Affinity Photo is a shame. Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher are successes, though.
Thank you for all the tutorials focused on the affinity series of apps - the more that is shared, the more people can utilize it for their work
You're very welcome! That's my goal, more people using the apps.
The simplest affinity halftone guide I’ve seen, THANK YOU
Glad it was helpful.
This is hands down the best guide I have seen on YT for this effect, really appreciated.
Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

The name for overlaying grids pattern, like when you take a picture of a screen is called a moire pattern
Yes
The L in HSL is Luminosity. It's right there in the adjustment sliders - Hue, Saturation, Luminosity.

Thanks for the video, Dave. Now can you show me how to remove Halftone from old newspaper scanned images?
Out of curiosity, do you still have the original images?

Unfortunately there is no pattern brush, so you can’t paint a solid texture, but you can make brushes from textures.
