It was quite the opposite effect for me; I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, as if the music was only an atomic radius from collapsing. Then he'd come back resurgent for the final movement.
Another very good version, in my opinion, is by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein. It's more paced than this one, but it's intense and vibrant.
@@pietstamitz1 Compared to Kleiber or Leibowitz, the intro of the allegretto is played "different", I mean the Cellos (I guess) play less percussive or say "longer notes" . That's why the timing seems less precise...of cause I respect everyones taste in music, there is no best conductor etcetc., but if you call it the best 7th ever, I have to answer. Enjoy your music.
@@retohofmann5878 you're right, I shouldn't call this the best performance, I have no right to say such things, but it was the one by which I got acquainted with the seventh, (so this will be my reference-recording) and it remains very impressive to me, but Kleiber's, Klemperer's and Furtwangler's 1943 versions (among others) are very great too, each in their own way.
@@pietstamitz1 Yes, I understand...the first version of a masterpiece remains always special. To me for this reason the Leibowitz' 7th is important, so the allegretto is very slow.
Me encantó.
The famous 1963 version is as good as it gets. I know Furtwangler was better, but the recording quality and the intonation mistakes make it hard to listen to, but this is powerful and tender. Little K was awesome!!
Furtwängler was not even close to better. People use the recording quality as an excuse not to appraise him objectively; and objectively, Karajan was far superior. (Though for this symphony, I prefer his later digital recording, which has even more fire in the last mvmt.)

Karajan was a master to keep music hapenning even during silences...There is NEVER a moment when you could feel the music will fall in pieces...

That's one of the best recordings of all; certainly never heard a better last movement - supremely exciting & joyous
agreed, phenomenal

16:33 and there begins the greatest fugue that has ever been composed in all of time...blessed is he till eternity
the best Beethoven 7th ever!
The worst Allegretto ever!
@@retohofmann5878 please explain, i'm curious..(here, for example, is a real allegretto, instead of andante or even adagio)

Bonsoir,

Very good,I love it, thanks!
15:40 and there begins the greatest drum beat march of the greatest funeral procession march ever composed
Karajan's best performance of Beethoven's symphonies, in his prime musical talent.
Dos genios.-
Wonderful music.
