I'm pretty sure that the bees *are* infected, since I do think I remember something talking about how the Radiance's hivemind was so close to theirs that they adapted to the change easily. What I think happened tho is that because they accepted her rule so easily, they essentially still function like bees and thus are not harmed by the infection or majorly influenced by it. We don't know how well Radiance sees us through the eyes of the bugs she controls, or how much instinct or will wins out over her control (well enough apparently, if you're desperate; looking at you Hollow), so it's possible that the bees 'see' you by scent and you putting on the hiveblood charm makes them 'see' you as a bee, thus tricking the Radiance into not being hostile as she can only sense what they sense. Also, for the Hive Knight? He makes those sounds with his mouth. It's adorable
The orange juice could be pollen or partially infection Even though the bees become neutral after equipping hiveblood, indicating sanity, their dream nail dialogue seems to say otherwise. Unorganized lines composed of scattered, single-worded thoughts & dialogue such as “hungry...tired...hungry” and “hurt...kill...hurt...kill...” seem to indicate that the infection has at least partially taken hold. However, being neutral towards fellow bees is one of a bee’s most basic instincts, and thus, keeps them cool.The infection reduces bugs to primal instinct alone, and it’s precisely that that keeps the bees neutral.
Fair enough. :) Though I'll tell you one thing that may help in future runs: if you've got it, use the Dream Gate before the arena. If you lose, you can teleport right back. :)
I love how much personality that Team Cherry puts into most of their bosses, especially the Hive Knight and Dung and White Defender. I just wish Hive Knight was harder. Unfortunately, all it takes is a strength charm and the Shade Cloak to take him down within 30 seconds.

Well, I have school, so I may not be able to see the episode in full yet, so let me just say: BZZZZ BZZ, BUZZ. This translates to "Thank you, Noob." Promising start for the year.
Ahhhh... I had the coiled nail, but only one soul gauge and 8 masks, along with shadow dash and life blood heart. I struggled, but his dream nail dialogue and ending animation hit me hard in the FEELS like a good story should.
Did it with 7 masks and coiled nail but I had 2 soul containers and no shade cloak. I had 9 notches so I used Mark of Pride, Quick Slash, and Quick Focus. Died twice and got him on the third try. The Hive itself is pretty rough too. Thankfully I had Dream Gate and the presence of mind to set it up at the entrance to the boss's arena because I could tell that the gauntlet from the bench back to the arena was going to be a pain.
Hive knight is my favorite boss in the game and omr he's soo adorable!! My favorite charm load out for hive knight: sharp shadow, mark of pride, weaversong, grimmchild, dash master, sprint master and grubb song! This load out is really good for avoiding taking damadge and still doing damadge with grimmchild and weaversong, mark of pride and sharp shadow give that extra reach, grubb song and sprint master makes the weaverling's hyper responseiv and give the knight soul!!
Hive Knight is a nice way to round out the Hive, which before Lifeblood didn't have a lot to it (granted, by the time I started playing Hollow Knight extensively Godmaster was out, so I've never experienced the pre-Lifeblood Hive). Also he has excellent music. Past that...well, I don't find him to be a particularly noteworthy boss. He is good at wrecking face if you underestimate him (I usually wind up dying to him the first time I challenge him on any given playthrough), but past that his attacks are all easy to see coming and have lots of windup. It didn't take me very long to put him down even on my first playthrough. I forget what my charm loadout was on my first victory, and nowadays I don't see the need to prepare specifically for him, be it wandering Hallownest normally or doing a Pantheon. So I usually take him on with the same loadout I'd use for any other boss, which nowadays is usually Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Mark of Pride, and Unbreakable Strength or Flukenest. I prefer using spells, so the first two charms are good for powering them up and making them less costly to use. I also like range on my nail, and Mark of Pride is really good for that. The last two charms are interchangeable depending on what I feel like doing at that time; Strength powers up my nail and makes it a strong option for whenever I don't have Soul for spells, while Flukenest doubles the damage of Shade Soul (provided all the flukes hit) and makes getting through certain bosses that much faster. It IS worth noting Flukenest won't trigger boss staggers for whatever reason, so keep that in mind if you're considering it. For Hive Knight in particular, I tend to have trouble with the honey spikes attack. So lately I've learned to just abuse Descending Dark's invincibility frames whenever that attack comes up. Granted, you do have to time it right, otherwise the invincibility frames end when the attack's still going (it's good to use it after dodging the first of the exploding orbs, sparing you the trouble of trying to dodge the other two + Hive Knight's leap). While I don't have any strong feelings about Hive Knight one way or the other, I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Hive. When I first figured out how to get into the Hive, it was at a time when I had a lot of Hallownest explored and it was getting really hard to find new and interesting things to do. So when I managed to find the real entrance to the Hive (without a guide, no less), it was a wonderful feeling to have a new area to explore, with some pretty great music no less. Sure, the Hive is a rather short and linear area with not a whole lot to it, but I still like wandering through it. On the subject of the bees and the Infection: I didn't think the bees were infected either, both because they lack the orange eyes of other noteworthy infected enemies and because of their interaction with Hiveblood. And also because, as Vespa points out, the Hive isn't actually part of Hallownest. On the other hand, an enemy that bleeds orange when struck is usually infected...which is all 99% of all enemies in the game, including some that don't look or act like they're infected otherwise. My current theory regarding the Infection is that, like a lot of actual illnesses, everyone who is infected reacts differently to it. This is most notable with the Colosseum of Fools; the bugs you fight there are supposedly infected, but the fools in the rest area don't attack you down there and the ones you do fight have coherent thoughts when stuck with the Dream Nail. So I believe they still possess a sense of self, but the Infection is giving them certain violent tendencies (hence why they fight as the Colosseum). If the bees of the Hive are indeed infected, I imagine something similar is going on with them. In their case, perhaps their violent tendencies only kick in when they see outsiders (like you are before getting Hivebood). When they're with their fellow bees or those they recognize as a fellow bee, they retain some degree of control over themselves. Incidentally, both the Colosseum and the Hive are located at Kingdom's Edge.... Truth be told, there's likely a lot that can be said about the Infection and whether it's truly inimicable to life in Hallownest, but most of that isn't really relevant to Hive Knight and so is a topic better left for another video. Another great discussion down. Onto the Pantheons next!

Second, that's a solid charm loadout and a solid response to the Honey Spikes attack. Those Descending Dark invincibility frames are so helpful. :) Another Noob has informed me that Team Cherry did in fact state that the bees are infected (in a Reddit AMA). And I love your idea about the Infection: that it affects bugs differently (just like a real infection). I also found the entrance without a walkthrought, but I did knew that it was hidden in Kingdom edge. Funny thing is that I found the secret entrance with the grub before the real entrance, so that gave me an idea of where the rest of the hive was.
The bees are infected. They resisted the infection for a long time but when Vespa died (for unknown and possibly unrelated reasons) they succumbed to it.
Just came across your channel and videos today. I haven't quite beaten HK yet (for the good ending anyway), so I'm tentatively trying to avoid potential spoilers. But honestly, thank you for using they/them pronouns for this boss throughout the video. Yay the Buzzy Boy gets his time in the spotlight!! Admittedly the boss itself isn't hard, maybe warrenting 2-3 attempts on normal play throughs, but still a great video if ppl do have trouble when dealing with Hive Knight in the Pantheons!!

Hive Knight caused me to rage quit my first playthrough of Hollow Knight when I blithely stumbled into the hive halfway through the game with few charms and upgrades, got totally wrecked, and lost all my money with my shade soul. Your video helped me understand this boss was probably designed for late game players and how to defeat it.
Great video! Love the slowed down footage. Great quality! I finally beat this guy yesterday after countless attempts. But by god, I was not leaving without that hiveblood charm! I initially used Soul Catcher, Spell Twister, Shaman Stone, and Thorn of Agony charms, but switched the Shaman Stone out for Quick Focus since I was just getting hit too much.
I have only 2 words for hive knight: sssST! F*k. very fun, but boy did he overload my capacity to react to what I was seeing on screen when I tried him first.
A minor note is that in his Ascended and Radiant forms, Hive Knight doesn't have to take damage to use his infinite bees and honey spike attacks, and can use them from the start of the fight, potentially even as his first attack. Not sure if Rory is planning to discuss such minor differences at a later time, so I'll toss it out here. Also, I do believe that the giant bee in the background IS the dead Vespa. They have the same eye layout, body type, "fur" collar, and such. For some reason her ghost is just a lot smaller than her actual body.
@@linuslundquist3501 If a character has a ghost/dream form in the normal world, they are dead. If a character is encountered inside of the dream world, they can be in just about any state in the normal world.
I originally thought that too and that her ghost was just a projection. But ghostly projections seem to be something that don't happen. So RIP Queen Vespa. :(
I personally feel she might still just be a projection - sure, they *normally* don't happen, but this is a Hive Queen right here. The only analogues we may have to compare are, well, The Pale King and The Radiance, and neither of them were particuarly good at staying dead.

Hehe. Nice. :) Yeah, this little buzz buzz didn't exist until the Lifeblood update which came out in mid 2018, over a year after the game was released so if you got through the Hive before that (like I did), we didn't have to earn our Hiveblood. ;)
as an absolute n00b, hive knight was one of the easier bosses. tbh I found the road to them a bigger challenge. but I sort of feel for them; being left to protect a leader long gone, the last stand of a colony who had to be hostile to survive the ongoing calamity. I'm really glad their Queen acknowledged them.
Dream Hive Knight fight idea First of all, bees would rain down EVERY time he knocked down, this would last for around 10 seconds Second of all, his attacks would have less telegraph time and be faster, while his orbs would be more numerous, and explode faster after spawning, and having more needles coming out than normal. Third of all, double damage, I decided this would be ok because this fight doesn't have so many things going on at the same time. Hive knight would also have 1/3 more health than he had in the first fight. Also, after the infinite need attack, he would NOT have a set pattern, but not being able to do that attack until it ends. If you dash through/over hive knight while he is doing a lunge attack, he will turn around almost instantly and do the same attack (like NKG.) This can only happen once per lunge. Well, that's all the ideas I have so far Edit : infinite bees, not needs, I mean, hive knight needs a better fight, but not an attack
I like a lot of this idea. That would be an intense fight. 🙂 Quick question: would everything do double damage or just Hive Knight? I think with all of the extra bees and spikes, it'd be a bit more balanced if only Hive Knight did double damage but everything else was still at 1. And I'm only making that suggestion because there may be a modder looking at this and mulling the idea over. 😆
I think I would've struggled more with Hive Knight if I hadn't beaten 3 iterations of Grey Prince Zote and also gotten the Pure Nail. Grey Prince does NOT MESS. I felt kinda bad for hitting something so adorable too.
Striking the Hivelings that the Hollow Knight dispenses will also give you SOUL, so if you’re in the midst of the fight, it can replenish your meter (If you’re brave) Edit: you can also attack Hive Knight while he is releasing the bees, so if you wanna get a lot of quick damage done, but don’t have SOUL, just wail on him til he’s done!
That is true. Though, I thought I had mentioned both of those tactics in this guide because they are so helpful. Either way, those are helpful tactics. :)
So I was fighting him just now, and I noticed something interesting about the swarm attack. I had quick slash at the time, and caught a hiveling directly above me. it seemed to move in a sort of wavy, sine-wave-like movement above me. One, you get soul from attacking hivelings. Could be useful. Two, quick slash makes it so you can knock them back as quickly as they move forward, holding them in place for as long as you're able to stay still. This in combination with staggering hive knight could be an incredible way to build up soul. That, and your dive attack works wonders while he's spewing bees.

I actually got the hive blood charm before this boss was added, so I had it before challenging him. Hive Queen Vespa also appeared despite the fact that I had absorbed her before in the game. Updates are strange sometimes.
Hrmm... The funny thing is that when my brother was about to fight him, he searched "How to beat the hive Knight." Then yesterday, I told him that you just made one. Well, by then he already beat the Hive Knight... And I have thought of a few puns while writing this. You'll BEE amazed, so yeah. I bet people are saying, WASP up?(What's up? Since Vespa means Wasp, so..) Wait... HIVE (have) I said that I thought of these? And made them up? (If you have read this far, you've probably been PUNished by these horrible jokes.)
I found the hive knight fast paced and slightly hard to avoid. Sharp shadow proved invaluable because I had to shadow dash through most of his grounded attacks. Took a lot of damage with no time to heal, so I used soul for spells rather than for healing against him. Side note but although I love the hive design, the actual bees themselves are a nightmare. These enemies are just so aggressive! The fat chunky bees do 2 whole mask damage! Also kinda annoying how you need to equip Hive blood charm to have protection from the bees, while Mark of Pride charm grants protection against Mantis enemies whether it's equipped or not. I guess the Mantis Lords and tribe are just more respectful overall.
Yeah. Sharp Shadow is very strong against Hive Knight. And yeah, the Hive can be real dangerous and annoying to get through. The bees attack us unless we have Hiveblood equipped because they are bees and very protective of their home (or Infected and therefore hyper aggressive). The Mantis Tribe are very disciplined and not Infected at all. They give us respect once we beat the Mantis Lords. We don't need to even have Mark of Pride. 🙂

Yeah the Mantis Lords and their tribe are super respectful and honorable. Really made me like them a lot. I like the Hive design wise but the vicious stinger bees and fat chunky bees are so dangerous! I don't even wanna admit how many times I died simply trying to rematch hive knight, usually because a fat chunky bee straight up bounced into me and crashed my HP to pieces xD Now that I've defeated the hive knight, I'll be watching your Grimm guide for the final charm notch before facing Hollow Knight ;)
Just binged all of these minus the few bosses I couldn't watch due to spoilers. Right at the end of the game just need to clean a few things up and whoop the Hollow Knight. I've enjoyed all of these despite having beaten the bosses already and I even learned a few things about some of them I didn't know before. I had a lot of trouble finding my way back to hive knight after dying cause of the 3985918357892489 bees along the way but one suggestion that I found on the wiki was to put a dream gate there! Allowed me to preserve all my lifeblood masks!

Also I believe if you use Heavy Blow, they get staggered much easier (less hits needed).

The Hive itself is pretty rough too. Thankfully I had Dream Gate and the presence of mind to set it up at the entrance to the boss's arena because I could tell that the gauntlet from the bench back to the arena was going to be a pain.

Hive knight is my favorite boss in the game and omr he's soo adorable!!
My favorite charm load out for hive knight: sharp shadow, mark of pride, weaversong, grimmchild, dash master, sprint master and grubb song!
This load out is really good for avoiding taking damadge and still doing damadge with grimmchild and weaversong, mark of pride and sharp shadow give that extra reach, grubb song and sprint master makes the weaverling's hyper responseiv and give the knight soul!!

Hive Knight is a nice way to round out the Hive, which before Lifeblood didn't have a lot to it (granted, by the time I started playing Hollow Knight extensively Godmaster was out, so I've never experienced the pre-Lifeblood Hive). Also he has excellent music.
Past that...well, I don't find him to be a particularly noteworthy boss. He is good at wrecking face if you underestimate him (I usually wind up dying to him the first time I challenge him on any given playthrough), but past that his attacks are all easy to see coming and have lots of windup. It didn't take me very long to put him down even on my first playthrough.
I forget what my charm loadout was on my first victory, and nowadays I don't see the need to prepare specifically for him, be it wandering Hallownest normally or doing a Pantheon. So I usually take him on with the same loadout I'd use for any other boss, which nowadays is usually Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Mark of Pride, and Unbreakable Strength or Flukenest. I prefer using spells, so the first two charms are good for powering them up and making them less costly to use. I also like range on my nail, and Mark of Pride is really good for that. The last two charms are interchangeable depending on what I feel like doing at that time; Strength powers up my nail and makes it a strong option for whenever I don't have Soul for spells, while Flukenest doubles the damage of Shade Soul (provided all the flukes hit) and makes getting through certain bosses that much faster. It IS worth noting Flukenest won't trigger boss staggers for whatever reason, so keep that in mind if you're considering it.
For Hive Knight in particular, I tend to have trouble with the honey spikes attack. So lately I've learned to just abuse Descending Dark's invincibility frames whenever that attack comes up. Granted, you do have to time it right, otherwise the invincibility frames end when the attack's still going (it's good to use it after dodging the first of the exploding orbs, sparing you the trouble of trying to dodge the other two + Hive Knight's leap).
While I don't have any strong feelings about Hive Knight one way or the other, I do have a bit of a soft spot for the Hive. When I first figured out how to get into the Hive, it was at a time when I had a lot of Hallownest explored and it was getting really hard to find new and interesting things to do. So when I managed to find the real entrance to the Hive (without a guide, no less), it was a wonderful feeling to have a new area to explore, with some pretty great music no less. Sure, the Hive is a rather short and linear area with not a whole lot to it, but I still like wandering through it.
On the subject of the bees and the Infection: I didn't think the bees were infected either, both because they lack the orange eyes of other noteworthy infected enemies and because of their interaction with Hiveblood. And also because, as Vespa points out, the Hive isn't actually part of Hallownest. On the other hand, an enemy that bleeds orange when struck is usually infected...which is all 99% of all enemies in the game, including some that don't look or act like they're infected otherwise.
My current theory regarding the Infection is that, like a lot of actual illnesses, everyone who is infected reacts differently to it. This is most notable with the Colosseum of Fools; the bugs you fight there are supposedly infected, but the fools in the rest area don't attack you down there and the ones you do fight have coherent thoughts when stuck with the Dream Nail. So I believe they still possess a sense of self, but the Infection is giving them certain violent tendencies (hence why they fight as the Colosseum). If the bees of the Hive are indeed infected, I imagine something similar is going on with them. In their case, perhaps their violent tendencies only kick in when they see outsiders (like you are before getting Hivebood). When they're with their fellow bees or those they recognize as a fellow bee, they retain some degree of control over themselves. Incidentally, both the Colosseum and the Hive are located at Kingdom's Edge....
Truth be told, there's likely a lot that can be said about the Infection and whether it's truly inimicable to life in Hallownest, but most of that isn't really relevant to Hive Knight and so is a topic better left for another video.

Another Noob has informed me that Team Cherry did in fact state that the bees are infected (in a Reddit AMA). And I love your idea about the Infection: that it affects bugs differently (just like a real infection). That's such a great interpretation and I think I'm going to try to keep that in mind for future guides and any thoughts I have regarding the lore of Hollow Knight. Thanks DL. :D

I also found the entrance without a walkthrought, but I did knew that it was hidden in Kingdom edge. Funny thing is that I found the secret entrance with the grub before the real entrance, so that gave me an idea of where the rest of the hive was.
The bees are infected. They resisted the infection for a long time but when Vespa died (for unknown and possibly unrelated reasons) they succumbed to it.

very fun, but boy did he overload my capacity to react to what I was seeing on screen when I tried him first.
Understandable.
A minor note is that in his Ascended and Radiant forms, Hive Knight doesn't have to take damage to use his infinite bees and honey spike attacks, and can use them from the start of the fight, potentially even as his first attack. Not sure if Rory is planning to discuss such minor differences at a later time, so I'll toss it out here.
Also, I do believe that the giant bee in the background IS the dead Vespa. They have the same eye layout, body type, "fur" collar, and such. For some reason her ghost is just a lot smaller than her actual body.
I've always thought she was just in some sort of hibernation.

@@linuslundquist3501 If a character has a ghost/dream form in the normal world, they are dead. If a character is encountered inside of the dream world, they can be in just about any state in the normal world.
I originally thought that too and that her ghost was just a projection.
But ghostly projections seem to be something that don't happen. So RIP Queen Vespa. :(
I personally feel she might still just be a projection - sure, they *normally* don't happen, but this is a Hive Queen right here. The only analogues we may have to compare are, well, The Pale King and The Radiance, and neither of them were particuarly good at staying dead.

Yeah, this little buzz buzz didn't exist until the Lifeblood update which came out in mid 2018, over a year after the game was released so if you got through the Hive before that (like I did), we didn't have to earn our Hiveblood. ;)
as an absolute n00b, hive knight was one of the easier bosses. tbh I found the road to them a bigger challenge.
but I sort of feel for them; being left to protect a leader long gone, the last stand of a colony who had to be hostile to survive the ongoing calamity.

Dream Hive Knight fight idea
First of all, bees would rain down EVERY time he knocked down, this would last for around 10 seconds
Second of all, his attacks would have less telegraph time and be faster, while his orbs would be more numerous, and explode faster after spawning, and having more needles coming out than normal.
Third of all, double damage, I decided this would be ok because this fight doesn't have so many things going on at the same time.
Hive knight would also have 1/3 more health than he had in the first fight.
Also, after the infinite need attack, he would NOT have a set pattern, but not being able to do that attack until it ends.
If you dash through/over hive knight while he is doing a lunge attack, he will turn around almost instantly and do the same attack (like NKG.) This can only happen once per lunge.
Well, that's all the ideas I have so far
Edit : infinite bees, not needs, I mean, hive knight needs a better fight, but not an attack
I like a lot of this idea. That would be an intense fight. 🙂
Quick question: would everything do double damage or just Hive Knight? I think with all of the extra bees and spikes, it'd be a bit more balanced if only Hive Knight did double damage but everything else was still at 1.
And I'm only making that suggestion because there may be a modder looking at this and mulling the idea over. 😆

I like this boss. You could say he's unBEE-lievable.
Striking the Hivelings that the Hollow Knight dispenses will also give you SOUL, so if you’re in the midst of the fight, it can replenish your meter (If you’re brave)
Edit: you can also attack Hive Knight while he is releasing the bees, so if you wanna get a lot of quick damage done, but don’t have SOUL, just wail on him til he’s done!

According to all known laws of a aviation a bee should not be this frigen strong
So I was fighting him just now, and I noticed something interesting about the swarm attack.
I had quick slash at the time, and caught a hiveling directly above me. it seemed to move in a sort of wavy, sine-wave-like movement above me.
One, you get soul from attacking hivelings. Could be useful.
Two, quick slash makes it so you can knock them back as quickly as they move forward, holding them in place for as long as you're able to stay still. This in combination with staggering hive knight could be an incredible way to build up soul.
That, and your dive attack works wonders while he's spewing bees.

I actually got the hive blood charm before this boss was added, so I had it before challenging him. Hive Queen Vespa also appeared despite the fact that I had absorbed her before in the game. Updates are strange sometimes.

I found the hive knight fast paced and slightly hard to avoid. Sharp shadow proved invaluable because I had to shadow dash through most of his grounded attacks. Took a lot of damage with no time to heal, so I used soul for spells rather than for healing against him.
Side note but although I love the hive design, the actual bees themselves are a nightmare. These enemies are just so aggressive! The fat chunky bees do 2 whole mask damage! Also kinda annoying how you need to equip Hive blood charm to have protection from the bees, while Mark of Pride charm grants protection against Mantis enemies whether it's equipped or not. I guess the Mantis Lords and tribe are just more respectful overall.
Yeah. Sharp Shadow is very strong against Hive Knight.
And yeah, the Hive can be real dangerous and annoying to get through. The bees attack us unless we have Hiveblood equipped because they are bees and very protective of their home (or Infected and therefore hyper aggressive). The Mantis Tribe are very disciplined and not Infected at all. They give us respect once we beat the Mantis Lords. We don't need to even have Mark of Pride. 🙂

I like your answers regarding the hyper aggressive protective bees. I don't remember if they were infected or not; but that could also be an explanation as well. Yeah the Mantis Lords and their tribe are super respectful and honorable. Really made me like them a lot. I like the Hive design wise but the vicious stinger bees and fat chunky bees are so dangerous! I don't even wanna admit how many times I died simply trying to rematch hive knight, usually because a fat chunky bee straight up bounced into me and crashed my HP to pieces xD
Now that I've defeated the hive knight, I'll be watching your Grimm guide for the final charm notch before facing Hollow Knight ;)
Just binged all of these minus the few bosses I couldn't watch due to spoilers. Right at the end of the game just need to clean a few things up and whoop the Hollow Knight. I've enjoyed all of these despite having beaten the bosses already and I even learned a few things about some of them I didn't know before. Overall great series and I'm excited to check out more of your Hollow Knight content. You have earned yourself another subscriber.

I had a lot of trouble finding my way back to hive knight after dying cause of the 3985918357892489 bees along the way but one suggestion that I found on the wiki was to put a dream gate there! Allowed me to preserve all my lifeblood masks!
