The pauses between the chase creeps me out. Like he’s looking around (for paparazzi😅), strategizing, then launching again, and again. Then do it again. Surely terrifying for the squirrel.
If this chase would have went a little longer, that squirrels chances were becoming very very slim of escaping. That Marten is quick, but the squirrel was just a tad quicker, but one false move, and game over for Skippy.
It's odd because squirrels are the *primary preferred diet* to pine martens. I was a bit surprised when I found this out today, squirrels are very difficult prey animals. They're quick, fight fiercely, have a very strong bite, and climb very well. So I wanted to know how on earth pine martens catch them. This video is either of a very poor pine marten hunter, or their success rate must be very low.
Just give up, I mean....once a squirrel gets to a tree, its like a god at dodging shit. No matter how many times you run around that tree, it'll always run faster then you. Kinda like the turtle VS the rabbit
Musta been a hungry marten? We have a pine marten that sometime chases the red squirells, there hard caught once in the tree and happy just to eat outa squirells feeder 🎄 great video
Martens are tree dwelling, medium small sized members of the weasel family (Mustelidae). Fishers and Wolverines are their larger cousins. The Pine Marten shown here preys mainly on squirrels and birds, but will attack rabbits and hares on the ground. Like most of their cousins they are very fierce for their size, and can prey on animals much larger than themselves. Their are several videos here of Yellow Bellied Martens in India preying on langur and macaque monkeys after crippling their victims by forcing therm to fall from trees. The squirrel escaped. The wide tree trunk gave it an advantage in hearing and dodging the Marten.
I was also waiting for it to get up to the branches but I think it´s because the marten is faster than the squirrel , so it would probably catch it if they were running upwards but on the contrary a bit too "clumsy" for catching it when running in circles.

@@kenneththorberg6914it's definitely not faster going up a tree, not even a bob cat is faster going a up a tree, although this is a small baby squirrel so maybe the marten would be faster after all
if a marten was the size of house cat we would have been in deep trouble . impossible to escape. squirrels are in deep trouble , on land its martins and foxes on air its hawks . staying alert is exhausting .

The American grey squirrel is now counted as a pest, unlike the English red squirrel here in the UK. They infect the reds. Our native pine martens prey on the greys as they are bigger but still the greys are far too numerous and now few parts of the UK have got reds. I'm not unhappy about greys getting caught.
Pine Marten? A weasel by any other name... Thanks for the correction! BTW - I recently saw an exhibit in a Natural History Museum of stuffed Mink, Weasel, and Pine Marten together. Very similar (and all were brown overall...).
That's one for the squirrel, but the marten only has to win once. The squirrel has to win every single time.
i realize Im quite off topic but do anybody know a good website to stream newly released movies online?
@Duke Neil i use FlixZone. Just google for it =)

To all the people worried about the Squirrel (like me) , it got away and lived to see another day! :)
Great video!
Thank you, that's a relief 👍
one of the few times where filming verticle actually made sense
The larger diameter the tree, the better chance the squirrel has of avoiding getting caught.
Which is why it stayed down at the base?
Didnt know this animal existed before 10mins ago and now I'm in love
Corderral, I'm surprised you've never seen a squirrel before as they are pretty common, but it is always good to learn new things. Have a nice day
IKR, just saw a video with a fisher cat. First time seeing one of those too

They're crackhead weasel cat things and they're real cool for it.

Damn, good for the squirrel, but the marten moves so fast, I thought there was two of them at some points.
scary, to be honest. don't nobody wants its snapped violently.
This would be cute, if it weren't a life and death situation.
It's only a dinner or no dinner situation.
Yes a marten for sure. Great vid.

the description says it went for 20 minutes
*The uploader said the squirel escaped.*
Pine martens are frequently successful chasing squirrels in the trees. You are not the man squirrel until you have made a marten quit.
Damn, this tree goes on forever.
Squirrel is like I can do it all day every day.
Real life Tom and Jerry
One of the scariest chases I've ever seen, especially when I put myself in that squirrel's place.
Wish there were some place to rent a Pine Martin. I have a backyard full of squirrels.
You just leave those squirrels in peace! They cause no humans any harm.
The squirrel was cute.
So funny chase

Lol that rat was just fucking with that martin. Come on man. Come get me. That was awesome.

joe rasdell escape where ? on land it can't outrun the marten .
An here i thought the trees wasn’t growing branches at the bottoms for shade.
What happened at the end???
Just the ordinary stuff , soft music and a long boring list of the involved characters.
squirrel has the advantage in the tree
So interesting video
WTF......how can anyone say its a great video. The things are probably running around the tree still.
And I thought I was the one having a bad day.
Sounds like the squirrel is laughing at the marten.

Why can't we get a richness (gang) of pine martens in Georgia. Squirrels are simply tree rats...serve no purpose.
Why doesn't the squirrel go high up in the tree?

That's a small squirrel size wise. Never understand why they don't just climb higher to the smallest branches. They are acrobats in the canopy.

Girth of the tree saving it...
Pitajee Shetty, no it could have been its demise since it can't see where the marten is.
thanks, but this is officially my new nightmare
Pine Martens are beasts! They can outrun a rabbit and catch it, and are darned near up to catching a squirrel.
I am sorry. I wish you could save that squirrel from the weasel.
The Marten is just not as fluid as the Squirrel on trees
