I've bought a Z900RS as my first bike last summer and I absolutely love it! The power is there when you want it, but it can be relatively tame if you keep it low in the rev range. It's very comfortable too, I think the width really helps with being able to have your legs at a natural angle. And of course the styling is superb. Every time I get off the bike I find myself admiring it, it still has the same wow factor it did when I bought it.

Lots of adjusting the handlebars to find that perfect 'sweet spot'. The side benefit was the way the mirrors sit now. Oh, forgot, I'll probably do the tune one of these days. I'm in no hurry though. Oh, and got rid of the government reflectors to clean it up. :)
I've owned a '19 Z900RS Cafe for last 5 years now and I agree with all of your points. I've used 89 octane once when it was all I could find, that was 2 years ago and no issues. Out of the 10 bikes I've owned it's the best non-sport bike I've ridden, so far. Nothing to be very concerned about because that issue has been addressed by Kawasaki now, I'm sure. You've done a great video review on this bike from an owner's position.
Yup, 87 or lower octane doesn't hurt anything. Like all modern vehicles, the ECM is intelligent and will adjust to the lower octane - just retards the ignition to keep it from knocking.
As a new rider looking to get my first bike, I lusted over the Z900RS, but there was no way I could purchase it, both for safety reasons (too powerful) and insurance rates. I eventually purchased a 2023 W800 as my first bike and 3 months later (7000km), I can say it was the right choice. It is a true modern retro. As I get more experience I may revisit the Z900RS, it still grabs my eye every time I walk into a dealership, it’s a beautiful bike! One things for certain, I won’t be getting rid of my W800.
One thing that stuck with me the minute I swung a leg over was the cluster. I started on a Vulcan 750 twenty years ago and looking down at that cluster brought me right back. It's so similar. PCV for fuel management, the tune I'm using is from conquest customs. I completely agree with what you said about the American V-Twins. Polaris should've never stopped making the victory motorcycles. I'm all about the Kaw Z900rs Cafe. Kaw just dropped the 2025 models with some different colors, check em out.
Nice review and pretty accurate too, cant argue with your comments. I think it's a bike you grow into, you need to give it time to really appreciate it.
My Cafe is two yrs old and I have only two gripes: the 'twitchy' throttle and the seat height. For the throttle, I swapped out the throttle tube and that helped some, only some, and yes, that throttle make slow speed maneuvers more challenging. For the seat height, am 5'6, I had the dealer installed a Brock's lowering kit when I bought it, but I would say am in the minority when it comes to that gripe. My other bike is a 1998 Buell S1 and the Cafe takes more efforts to maneuver compares to the S1. On the technology side, going from the S1 to the Cafe is like the P-51 to the F-16. Overall, and excellent review of the Cafe and I agree with you that the Cafe is a complete motorcycle. I will be keeping my Cafe until I cannot ride anymore.
Hey there! Thanks for watching! I had a friend replace the throttle tube and he said it was a world of difference. Probably my favorite motorcycle I've owned so far!
I love mine. 2020 Cafe. Got rid of the quirky throttle with the Ivan's flash and air box mod. Delkavic headers. Kept the stock muff. Sounds great. Sold my ZZR1200 when i bought this. A good 100lbs lighter. Much more flickable. Also put on SS brake lines. That cleaned up the abs issues.
@@jacksunstone8771 I'm gonna have to probably get that Ivan's tune done with some different headers and the bread box delete. I bet the SS break lines are nice!
I own a 2019 Cafe, same mods except MRA windscreen (eliminated buffering), Hurricane handlebar, add T-Rex back rest, Posh taillight, had the seat shaved down an inch by local upholstery shop, tail eliminator, no air box mod, did change air filter with an MWR air filter www.racingairfilters.eu/product/performance-airfilter-z900rs-%e2%86%92-17-23/ Bike keeps getting better every time I take it out, love it.
Like your take on the motorcycle. I have the 50th anniversary version. I wasn't thrilled with the seat at first but have since realized that if I sit up tall in the seat I can ride a lot longer. I also wish the turn signals had a more retro look and miss not having a center stand.

Everything you were saying about it being dialed in, straight off the floor is true ! Do that tail tidy tho ! You wont regret it. Videos on my page under SHORTS. Long form vids coming soon.
Hey there, thanks for watching! I gotta do that tail tidy at some point. The 22' with the stripe and 2 tone seat is very cool! Get that review out! Checked out your shorts. Very good photography sir!
The snatchy throttle is my biggest complaint in terms of rideability. For me it's more intrusive with more aggressive riding. The way it brings fuel back after engine braking upsets the bike in a corner. I feel more confident on my 1989 Katana 750 than my 2023 RS SE, despite the far superior brakes and suspension of the latter. The thing I don't like about the cosmetics is how soft the clearcoat is. I'm planning to do some paint correction and ceramic coating.
Test rode one before buying an R12 NineT. I loved the looks, but on close inspection, areas seemed a little unfinished, the radiator sticks out, and overall the quality was not up to the BMW. The engine was super smooth but lacks any character at all. Picked up an ex demonstrator BMW for the same price as a new Z900RS, and it has fully adjustable front and rear suspension, 6 gears, cruise control, heated grips, quick shifter, phone/nav integration etc, and for me has way more character. I also love the shaft drive. I wanted to like the Kawasaki, but back to back riding there was no comparison. I have to be honest and say that I have just sold a GS, so maybe its a boxer engine thing, but before buying that I rode one of the Versys models, and again no character and parts of it looked unfinished. But hey, that's the great thing about bikes, there is one to suit everybody.
Thanks for the reply! Congrats on the R12. Those seem to be killer bikes! I own a boxer BMW as well. The R18. Beautiful Machine. Has Character, presence and all the buzzwords. Al-tho the fit/finish is excellent, I've already had to exercise the warranty due to a failure that left me stranded 400miles from home at only 1500miles. The Kawi has not had one single hiccup. Fit/finish at least on mine was pretty much perfect, but I admit it's not as neat and as purposeful and deliberate as my BMW. The R12 looks like the middle ground (size wise) between the 9T and 18. Very good looking bike! The Z900 Cafe' is more of a niche' bike IMO. It's the only Japanese bike here in the U.S. that I can think of that gives you all the modern performance with the retro look. But although Japanese bikes are very well built they don't seem to use as robust components. My R18 is a substantial machine. One of the reasons why I love the Z900/R18 is there's minimal tech. I love analogue or at least analog-ish bikes.
Absolute stunner. Just sat on one at the Kawasaki dealership 😍. Once I get my license done…. Heading back straight there to purchase the Z900 RS cafe 💪🏽 While looking at the rear…. Was also considering a tail tidy kit. Which one do you suggest!?
@@Spartansrule118 Appreciate it. The W800 Cafe' is definitely not a performance machine but It had enough power. It was an awesome everyday ride that had tons of mojo/character. It's pretty much a retro bike through and trough with efi. Also they are a pretty rare here in the USA.
@@goldfish8196I had the cafe' version. Just like the Z the W had a particular charm but in more of an old school/classy way. The bevel drive, the styling, sound, vibes and heritage. it did everything well but excelled in Character and styling. Everywhere I went with it people were always intrigued by the bike. Most of all it's about the intangible. It made me feel like I was a character in my own movie. The Z takes the W to more of a performance based machine... It's a better bike all around but the W has more of the intangible. For me that's paramount in bike ownership.
The Brakes on my 2020 z900rs cafe are really good. They work well. If you’re pushing the bike it can feel “squishy” when slowing at high speeds. A set of steel braided likes would prolly make the brakes go from pretty good to really great. Also even though they can feel squishy the brakes still have good feel I must say.
Great review, got me thinking...standard RS or Cafe, was aiming more standard, but I think the slight lean forward along with some wind/bug protection chest down might be welcomed.
Nice review! How safe do you feel riding on 2 lane roads in Nashville? It looks like Wisonsin but without the winters, I am so burnt out on LA people and traffic time to go back home to Smyrna, it looks nice this time of year!
Hey thanks! Yeah I'm fine with it. I usually avoid the main congested areas at peak hours (Interstate and downtown). Not only are the drivers terrible but the roads are chewed up in those areas. So I always plan the scenic route. Smyrna area seems fine tho. Cheers!
Great review awesome bike, what do you think about the tires, are you planning to modify anything on your bike. I hope you don’t mind me asking where are you filming this video from the scenery is beautiful it reminds me a lot like NY Than you
Great video ...I,m definitely getting a z9....just wondering between the cafe and standard model.Do you find the cafe comfortable I prefer the look of the cafe but I,m 55 and comfort is important as I would like to tour.
I do find it comfortable. The handlebars are what most people love/hate on the Cafe'. But that's an easy swap. The seat is a little lower than the standard as well. Overall the standard is more comfy but it does sit you up a little higher with the seat.
I’m 66 years old, 5’6” and love the comfort of the standard model. Once the seat is broken in, you can ride for hours, and then get up and do it again! For touring, I added a Puig windshield and the coolest Pro Blaze H Saddlebag Set that doesn’t require ugly brackets bolted onto the frame. A bit pricey, but worth it I think. Ride safe 🏍️😎
Getting one soon, like this week looking at a 2019 both I don't know if I should get it Grey with the green or the whole green and white, both same milage ish, but man can't wait to try it. I heard that if you put it in KTRC 2 helps with the snatchy throttle is that true? If you want to just chill.
Both are great color schemes but I'm partial to a more understated look. The grey one would be my pick. But the green is classic Kawi! Honestly I never took it out of KRTC 1. But I'm pretty sure that's just a traction control thing and not a ride mode. 1 is less intensive and 2 is a little more. I believe many switch to 2 for rain. Cheers!
Any recalls? I was looking at the 2024 yellow ball, and the dealership said they couldn’t sale any do to a recent recall and wouldn’t elaborate on it either
Love the Z900. Am an older rider getting back into it so haven't ridden for years, so more or less like a new rider, do you think it would be too much for a new rider at the moment riding a royal enfield interceptor.
Hey my friend, I don’t think you will regret the Kawasexy! I am now 66 years old and got back into riding about 6 years ago. I started on a Honda CTX700, and, after 1.5 years and 14k miles, I bumped up to the non-cafe Orange and Brown 2018 z900rs. What can I say? I wanted more power and sound! I now have over 35k miles on the z900rs, with no major problems, only regular maintenance performed. In fact, I haven’t even had to replace the chain yet! This could be due to the fact that I ride mostly back roads in a very clean and dry San Diego, or I just ride like a little, old man 🏍️ 😎 This bike is a keeper IMO. It can do almost anything, except off road. It’s light, nimble and comfortable. You can ride chill downtown or have a blast in the twisties! I have even added a windscreen and the coolest rear bags with REMOVABLE FRAME from Motech so I can go on weekend trips. Comfort, performance and looks! What more can you ask for?
Thanks for that, they sound like great bikes, they definitely look it. I got back into it about 18 months ago when I was 60. Might do a few more miles on what I've got, and maybe look for a good second hand one. Except here in New Zealand you don't see too many second hand I think everyone keeps them.👍
are the peg further behind than the normal z900rs? because i would like to put clip handlebars on the z900rs se but i think i'll have the peg too further for the seat..
the pegs are placed directly below your rump for a standard UJM upright riding position and lower than you wld expect. the only difference with the cafe is the handle bars the seat profile and the bullet cowl
Only thing I hate is the chain. I clean and lube it after every ride because if I don’t shifting feels clunky. Do you have the same sensation? I use gear oil not wax.
No, The gear box is fine for the most part except for the 1st to 2nd shift can feel clunky at times. For the chain; I've been using Motul Chain Paste. It's a little thicker than the lube and wax I'd been using from Maxima. It also doesn't come off in the rain or at least not as much as the regular. A carry over from my dual sport days. I clean/re-apply about every 300 miles or whenever needed.

@@bertsbikeThank you so much for your reply. Owning both bikes sounds like the ideal scenario.
@@goldfish8196 Owning the Z and the W would be amazing. If I didn't buy my Bonneville and mod the heck out of it, I would've bought another W.
Yeah, Steel braided lines would be a good move i think.
@@bertsbikealso if you plan on keeping buy the maintenance manual.
It’s not cheap.
But it’s worth it in the long run.
Cheers!
@@bertsbike Thanks, yep just ride defensively and anticipate drivers don't see us.
I have a bmw s1000xr. Something keeps telling ne to part exchange it for this z900
Hmm... That's a sweet bike. It probably has a lot going on with it no? The Z900 is kinda bare bones... Which I like.
Bar end mirrors would be a nice touch
@@shawnzucchero6139 I do like the look of bar ends on other Z900RS Cafe's. I'd also like to get some slimmer/rounder turn signals.
Good trick to manoeuvre in 2 nd instead of first. 4 cyl are smooth and torque is plenty. just feather the clutch a bit..
Agreed. I typically ride in 2nd at slow speed.
Great review awesome bike, what do you think about the tires, are you planning to modify anything on your bike.
I hope you don’t mind me asking where are you filming this video from the scenery is beautiful it reminds me a lot like NY
Than you
@@creed426Thanks! I think the tires are just passable. I'll probably put some Dunlop Mutants on after they wear out. This was shot in south Nashville.

I’m looking at getting one of these asap first bigger bike. Does it miss a 6th gear for touring?
Thanks for the review. Too work 🤙
It has all 6 gears.
@@bertsbikesorry I was thinking of the cb1300 which I was considering as well. But these have won me over
@@chrisvassos9929 I owned a cb1100 that had only 5 gears. That was a sweet bike!
@@scottashdown3686 I do prefer the comfort of tge standard seat
Interesting! Which year is your bike?

Awesome review, awesome bike
No I haven't seen or received anything about a recall. The yellow ball is sweet.
I have a 2024 se and no known recall or issues! Amazing do it all motorcycle!
they were lying to you probably to sell you a $25k sport bike. what did they try to talk you into after they said that bs about the RS?
Curious if the Z has much hooligan in it. Will it power wheelie?
I have the z650rs in green. Love it as a female. It's the perfect size.
Ah cool. I've been wanting to check out the 650's. Seems like a great bike. I need to get a test ride in at some point.
This is a great video!
Love the Z900. Am an older rider getting back into it so haven't ridden for years, so more or less like a new rider, do you think it would be too much for a new rider at the moment riding a royal enfield interceptor.
Hey my friend,
I don’t think you will regret the Kawasexy! This could be due to the fact that I ride mostly back roads in a very clean and dry San Diego, or I just ride like a little, old man 🏍️ 😎
This bike is a keeper IMO.
Except here in New Zealand you don't see too many second hand I think everyone keeps them.👍
Does yours have an immobilizer in the ignition?
@@Riverbottomgarage I don't think so.
Hi! It is possible to know where to buy the black wingscreen? Name of the model and link?

@@matthewkhieokham3152 Anytime! Thanks for checking it out.
I didnt like the handle bars. There was pressure on the outer parts of my palms….. then again I’m getting the z900rs se so that shouldn’t be an issue.
ah. Many people end up swapping those out. Would you go for a more standard feel?
@@bertsbikeI’ve sat on the z900rs and the rs se version. Their handlebars are straighter, less “clip-on” angled.
I test rode the regular one and I think most people will want those handlebars vs the pseudo "clubmans" the Cafe' has.
z900rs vs w800. which one should i get? they are cost pretty much the same in my country
Great video, where is the Z900RS Birthday Cake ? :)
Thanks. Funny you should mention that. I actually tried putting one in the thumbnail. 🤣🎂

Everything you said I love.
Thanks mate!
are the peg further behind than the normal z900rs? because i would like to put clip handlebars on the z900rs se but i think i'll have the peg too further for the seat..
@@leonardomenegazzo98 They are not.
the pegs are placed directly below your rump for a standard UJM upright riding position and lower than you wld expect. the only difference with the cafe is the handle bars the seat profile and the bullet cowl
Nashville is beautiful !!!!!!
@@PipakwloKoula6748 Thanks! it has it's good sides 🤘
